Lesser knowm Irish polar explorers, local historians did a lot of work to inspire interest in them. Bit part players in one of the 20th C's most enduring and emotive stories of human endurance against the elements. 

Worth writing about in light of renewed interest in Crean et al. T. McCarthy d. in WWI as a Sailor Mortinmer lived until 1967 and continued to explore, visiting the South Pole in 1963
