Disciplined Rebellion: The Science Textbook - Yea, Nay, or Somewhere In-between?

Disciplined Rebellion: The Science Textbook - Yea, Nay, or Somewhere In-between? | My Prof Dev | Scoop.it
Keisha Lewis's insight:

I have also found myself shifting away from textbook usage. Ironically as the students get older, up to college age, I am seeing a need for them to develop their skills in gleaning and applying content from their textbooks. It does highlight the reality that being a scientist does also involve a lot of reading: journal articles, reports, books, etc...

So textbook reading does have a role, in my opinion, particularly for the older students that may already headed for a very real career in science.

Professional Learning in a Digital Age / Canadian Journal of Learning and Technology

Professional Learning in a Digital Age / Canadian Journal of Learning and Technology | My Prof Dev | Scoop.it

While professional development (PD) has always been central to the teaching profession, increasingly traditional models of PD are out of step with contemporary ways of learning. Commiserate with the literature, we see the field moving along a continuum which reflects changes in what, how and when teachers learn. Following a brief sketch of the online teacher professional development (oTPD) field, we identify important considerations of emerging models of technology-mediated professional learning (TMPL). We posit the catalyst for the transformation of education, as envisioned by countless educational leaders, may lie in reimaging professional development as professional learning in a networked age.

As the technology grows more availalbe, the Flipped Learning Model offers some very intersting potential related to :Bring Your Own Device.  While in the process of solving a problem, a student can access the content material on a tablet, school computer or the student's own smart phone, right there in class.  This keeps it fresh and present when needed.
