ASSAULTS against paramedics will be pursued in the courts after NSW Ambulance Service declared zero tolerance of violence against its staff.
Skye Krobath's insight:

Paramedics are putting there lives at risk when trying to save others every day as violence against paramedics are increasing.  This occupational risk is increasing turn-over time therefore increasing fatigue and stress on the paramedics (especially when it is 2am and people cannot handle their alcohol levels). This is not on!  Will this cause paramedics to burn out a lot quicker? We will know the answer in a few years time, when violence against paramedics have increased.

Paramedic Registration and CPD | Paramedics Australasia

Skye Krobath's insight:

Paramedic registration has been an ongoing debate about it worth and should we peruse it. I have personally spoken to QAS paramedics and have gotten a different perspectives about the situation.  Places around the globe are unfortuanatly already registered which means further training will have to be taken if wanting to work in different countries. This will however increase the safety of our patients, as people who are not paramedics can say that they are in other countries and people will believe them.  So its not only protecting Paramedics but also provides more safety to our casualties.

Skye Krobath's insight:

I love to fish. I love the water.
This was taken off the coast of Mackay out by one of the reefs. Fishing is a hobby, its not one I do often but when I do it is so worth it.  There are many hazards on board a boat and I am sure you can think of some very obvious ones, hooks, knifes and so on.
Australia is a beautiful place and its times like these that make the hazards unimportant.  In a paramedics world, it is important to peruse the things your love on your restored days off and downtime, it keeps you centered and at peace, and ready for you next block.

Skye Krobath's insight:

Occupational health and safety has given me the opportunity to open my eyes and look at a scenario in a completely different aspect. Hazards that I didn't notice before are now more clear.  This has given me the knowledge of how to go about a certain situation and the ability to provide a safe outcome. It is important for the Queensland Government to provide employees with the correct Occupational Health and Safety laws in order to provide them with a safe work environment.

I know it doesn't look like it, but at this time there were heaps of occupational hazards that we faced everyday. There was broken glass, every second child had HIV and the building was close to caving in.  Its places like these that make you appreciate the secure things in your life.

International Volunteer HQ - providing high quality, safe and extremely affordable international volunteer programs abroad.
Skye Krobath's insight:

I just spent a month in Kenya, working with orphans. I provided them with the love, care, nurture and support they needed to enable them to keep going. These kids have been taken from their unfortunate lives and put in a home to keep them safe and provide an education.  I was also apart of a Women's Health program and taught them about puberty and that the changes to our body are OK and normal. Everyone goes through it.  These girls had no idea about hygiene and how important it was to shower and bath, especially when it was their time of the month.  We worked with an organisation called The Washi Chana Found to provide  and distribute sanitary pads for the  girls between the ages of eighteen and twenty as it was not a necessity for them to have. If the Washi Chana found wasn't existing, the girls would miss one week out of every month from school just to wait till it passed.
This was a life changing experience and I recommend everyone to do it.

In Kenya there are so many different hazards, especially health related. I believe that this has given me better perspective into my countries, main risks associated with health. This has made me more cautious with the things with the things I touch and then how quickly I wash my hands.

There are some simple steps agencies can follow to implement effective injury- and illness-prevention
programs.
Skye Krobath's insight:

There are always simple easy steps a person can follow to prevent injuries.  The more employers enforce it the more employees will rebel (just like a teenager) If we are able to change the thought process of doing a movement we  might be able to change the movement thus resulting in preventing injury.

What does a paramedic do? What are some health and safety issues for paramedics? What are some preventive measures for a paramedic?
Skye Krobath's insight:

Here are some occupational health and safety issues that paramedics face everyday. Some may not seem big to everyone however if they were to occur they can cause serious dilemma for the service.  Its OHS that keeps us safe, and it only works if you are aware of your surroundings. If this wasn't enforced how may work related accidents would occur?

Mia McGeough's curator insight, March 10, 2014 6:35 PM

What an interesting read! This article provides brief dot points on what paramedics experience with regards to heatlh and safety issues, hazards and risks and also provides some preventative measures paramedics can take to avoid such things. Notably, assault by patients/bystanders is not on the list. However, included in the preventative measures section is a link to more information about working alone and working alone with patients. Working alone and alone with patients does present unique hazards and challenges and it is here the author mentions violence as being a risk. Significantly, the article also lists extreme psychological stress and trauma as health and safety issues and suggests paramedics learn about stress and post traumatic stress and consider debriefing sessions and counselling after attending critical/traumatic events. There are others listed as well, including exposure to contagious diseases, awkward postures, repetition, force/over-exertion, extreme temperatures, slips, trips and falls. All of which preventative measures are provided.

Knowledge is power. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the human body are the tools of the trade for every health professional. It is their language, and is the reason they are able to provide diagnosis and management plans.
