Two iOS 7 features Parents will Love

Two iOS 7 features Parents will Love | My Misc. Stuff | Scoop.it

"Last week was the much ballyhooed debut of the iPhone 5S and 5C along with iOS 7.  iOS is the Apple operating system for mobile devices.  While many folks are commenting on the new design (shown here), there are at least two new features that parents should be aware of.  First, you can now restrict Safari from showing adult content, and second, you can block contacts.  Blocking contacts means there is a solution to the problem of group iMessages."

Gabi Witthaus's curator insight, September 3, 2013 4:47 AM

Interesting idea - this could be useful in EFL teaching or just for people who are reading in English as a second language and need a bit of help.

I tried it on the Adobe Connect website to see if it would demystify some of the 'Marketese' though, and it didn't help much! A sentence such as 'Powering mission-critical web conferencing solutions, end-to-end, on virtually any device' is full of everyday words which are being used in an unnecessarily obscure way. Which is why I'm in favour of simply writing in plain English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plain_english).

On that subject, I recently discovered the absolutely wonderful Simple English Wikipedia (http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page), which does just that.

This website is made for children that have a hard time understanding a word or sentence in the English language. By breaking down a word or difficult sentence into word that the child will be able to know.

It's amazing how many technologies are available to teachers. It's amazing what all the Google forms can do. I may have to write a blog post to go over those many features. You can almost turn Google forms into a full-fledged learning platform along with some of their other tools. And the best part is most of them are free. I just wrote a similar post on the learning apps available, but now I realize that article is not complete.

I just downloaded the free version which looks good, but may have to upgrade. The features look well worth the $3.99 price. You can move & resize your drawn objects, zoom in/out, etc. If you're working on creating "flipped classroom" videos, or how-to tutorials this may be what you need. Check out their website and user guide for the details.
