Learn to Code with Harvard’s Intro to Computer Science Course And Other Free Tech Classes ~ Open Culture

Learn to Code with Harvard’s Intro to Computer Science Course And Other Free Tech Classes ~ Open Culture | My Interests | Scoop.it

by Josh Jones

I’m tempted to rectify my programming ignorance by pushing through what promises to be a rigorous intro to computer science, CS50, Harvard’s introductory course for both majors and non-majors alike. The course offers a broad knowledge base to build on, as you can see from thedescription below:

"Topics include abstraction, algorithms, encapsulation, data structures, databases, memory management, security, software development, virtualization, and websites. Languages include C, PHP, and JavaScript plus SQL, CSS, and HTML. Problem sets inspired by real-world domains of biology, cryptography, finance, forensics, and gaming. Designed for concentrators and non-concentrators alike, with or without prior programming experience.

"Harvard has made this course available free to anyone—via YouTube, iTunes, and the course page—with a series of lectures filmed during the Fall 2011 semester. The class is led by David J. Malan, an enthusiastic young professor and Senior Lecturer on Computer Science at Harvard, and himself a product of Harvard’s Computer Science program. Professor Malan has also offered Harvard’s CS50 as a MOOC through edX. In the introductory lecture to CS50 (above), Malan promises that “this is one of those rare courses that actually squeezes your brain so much and your schedule so much that by the end of the semester you actually feel smarter.”

Cognitive Task Analysis

Cognitive Task Analysis | My Interests | Scoop.it

By Donald Clark

"Part of the analysis phase is capturing the skills required for performance. While there are several methods for capturing these performance, ISD normally only lists Behavioral Task Analysis. However, many task are largely overt and nonprocedural in nature, thus they require a Cognitive

Task Analysis. The solution of course is to simply plug the desired method or tool into the ISD or ADDIE model as it is quite dynamic rather than the stale linear model that some believe.

"Four analysis tools will be discussed in this post that may be plugged into ISD:

-Behavioral Task Analysis

-Information Processing Analysis

-GOMS Analysis

-Critical Decision Method"

Gaming Literacies: A Game Design Study in Action - Katie Salen

Jim Lerman's curator insight, May 29, 2013 6:20 PM

Abstract of the paper:

"Educators and education advocates have recently acknowledged that the ability to think systemically is one of the necessary skills for success in the 21st century. Game-making is especially well-suited to encouraging meta-level refl ection on the skills and processes that designer-players use in building such systems. Membership in a community of game producers means sharing thoughts and experiences with fellow players. This ability to gain fl uency in specialist language and to translate thinking and talking about games into making and critiquing them (and vice versa) suggests that games not only teach literacy skills but support their ongoing use. Rather

than imagining that education can be transformed by bringing games into the classroom, researchers should consider not only the effects of the thinking engendered by those who play, but also by those who design the play. This article offers an overview of the pedagogy and development process of Gamestar Mechanic, an RPG (Role Playing Game) style
online game designed to teach players the fundamentals of game design. It will discuss some of the early results of the project, with an emphasis on the conceptual framework guiding the work, as well as the kinds of literacies and knowledge structures it is intended to support."

REVIEW: Invent To Learn by Sylvia Libow Martinez and Gary Stager (EdSurge News) | My Interests | Scoop.it

by Peter Kaminski

"Okay, I confess: I love this book.

"Invent to Learn: Making, Tinkering, and Engineering in the Classroomby Sylvia Libow Martinez and Gary Stager, does a fantastic job of laying out the pedagogical underpinnings for why "making" has a place in school.

"In their readable, down-to-earth style, Martinez and Stager provide a rich history of why making activities not just belong in school but are the root of genuine learning: "The maker movement may represent our best hope for reigniting progressive education," they write."

Based on the company’s research and insights, they found that visual data is absorbed 60,000x faster than text and people will only read about 20% of the text on a page.

Habits: How They Form And How To Break Them : NPR

Habits: How They Form And How To Break Them : NPR | My Interests | Scoop.it

From the website

"It turns out that every habit starts with a psychological pattern called a "habit loop," which is a three-part process. First, there's a cue, or trigger, that tells your brain to go into automatic mode and let a behavior unfold.

"Then there's the routine, which is the behavior itself," Duhigg tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross. "That's what we think about when we think about habits."

"The third step, he says, is the reward: something that your brain likes that helps it remember the "habit loop" in the future."

donhornsby's curator insight, May 31, 2013 7:22 AM

(From the article): On breaking habits

"What we know from lab studies is that it's never too late to break a habit. Habits are malleable throughout your entire life. But we also know that the best way to change a habit is to understand its structure — that once you tell people about the cue and the reward and you force them to recognize what those factors are in a behavior, it becomes much, much easier to change."

Game Architecture: Delivering Meaningful Learning Experiences | Learning Solutions Magazine

Game Architecture: Delivering Meaningful Learning Experiences | Learning Solutions Magazine | My Interests | Scoop.it

By Mayra Aixa Villar

"The ultimate goal of a game designer is to deliver an experience. When people play video games, they experience different feelings; they attain different goals by facing challenges. They overcome conflicts in order to solve the problems posed by the game. In doing so, they can defeat their opponents or be defeated. Of course, this happens in an artificial world, but when comparing the type of experiences shaped by video games, I find that some of them can faithfully emulate real-life situations and that is what can make these alternative realities so powerful.

"In his book The Art of Game Design. A Book of Lenses, Jesse Schell maintains that every game designer should try to build in the essence of the experience they want to create. In order to identify those essential features, Schell proposes that designers attempt to view games from different perspectives, that is, through different lenses. Some of these lenses could also help instructional designers create their next educational experience by incorporating some interesting ingredients from the gaming world."
