When Not to Use Technology: 15 Things That Should Stay Simple In Education

When Not to Use Technology: 15 Things That Should Stay Simple In Education | Monya's List of e-Learning & EdTech Tools & Resources | Scoop.it

"Most of us know better than to use technology for technology’s sake. The Shiny New Tech Syndrome is taking the world by storm, and with the added pressure of finding new ways to improve educational outcomes, we try our best not to be tempted. But there are some things–certain methods, activities, and tools–we still assume can be enhanced with a little computational flair, when really, if we stopped to question ourselves, we’d find them best delivered the old-fashioned way."

rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, December 6, 2014 1:30 AM

As and educator, I see so much that is relevant in this writeup! Take for example the first instance, one should not use technology which creates short cuts, so often students would rather the teacher sent important notes on e-mail than take down important notes as the discussion progresses. They just don't want to take the trouble in note taking and writing on their note books! More often than not the very purpose of using technolgy is lost when it is not properly used to enhace creative thinking, and problem solving. Technology becomes an end that is when it becomes deadly! Technology shouldn't be used when it attempts to replace basic skills that our society values, take for example using the calculator on your I phone to do basic calculations. Ironically, I have seen how technology has in fact reduced interaction, making students poor listeners, they simply will not listen to each other. Technology should not be used when it reduces failure. Today we talk about Experiential Learning. For me, personally, experiential learning is about learning from one's experiences, even if it means learning from the pain of failure. You didn't learn to ride a bicycle without falling even once! Often we jump at new technology, we become victims of the Shiny New Tech Syndrome according to the writer of this article! Just because the keyboard looks inviting, it doesn't mean you abandon pen and paper, or even stopped writing notes! The list goes on, and every reason listed in this article is very important. This is a wonderful article, a must read for all progressive Educators!

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, December 6, 2014 11:57 AM

When it undermines deep learning and creates dangerous shortcuts are two excellent points to begin the list with.

Are You A Tech-Savvy Teacher, This Infographic Will Tell You | TechFaster

Are You A Tech-Savvy Teacher, This Infographic Will Tell You | TechFaster | Monya's List of e-Learning & EdTech Tools & Resources | Scoop.it
Through the course of our “summer school” here at Techfaster we’ve met plenty of tech savvy educators. From ISTE in early July to the NAESP show and Campus Tech that wrapped up this week, teachers, administrators and education enthusiasts were learning, sharing, and networking with each other. These are definitely the tech savvy teacher type, and that’s validated in the infographic below from Daily Genius. But just because you spent part of the summer at EdTech conferences doesn’t necessarily mean you are a tech savvy teacher. Of course the reverse is true as well, maybe you had family events and your own kids to tend to during the summer. Are you a tech savvy teacher? A strong indicator would be that you’re even reading this article here at techfaster.com. Are you keeping your students, parents, fellow teachers and administrators up to date with the goings on in your classroom with your own blog? That’s a good sign you’re a tech savvy teacher. Just think about what the communication you can have with a blog, would have been like in the days of the ditto machine? You would have to plan out your thoughts, outline them, create a ditto original, print them, pass them out to students, and just pray they didn’t end up on the floor of the school bus. Are you networking with other teachers you’ve never met on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest or a knowledge sharing educational site? Are you regularly attending edtech chat or listening to podcasts? All of these are signs that you care about your own professional development, living in current times and caring about your students. YouTube, Twitter, SnapChat, Minecraft, Instagram, and Vine are all a part of your students lives. Facebook, Pinterest and email are all a part of your students’ parents’ lives. You’re almost too far behind if you’re not a “tech savvy” teacher. Check out the infographic below and see how you stack up.
