McGraw-Hill Reader

Love, Internet Style.

brittany lace smith's insight:

Brooks, David. “Love, Internet Style.” The McGraw-Hill Reader: Issues across the Disciplines. Ed. Gilbert H. Muller. 11th ed. Boston: McGraw-Hill Education, 2011. 318-321 Print. Our textbook was one of the sources we had to use for our paper. The story I chose to do was called Love, Internet Style and it was about looking for love online. The author doesn’t really go with my argument that well, but he does give a lot of good statements about online dating that I can use for my paper. He does mention that men are more likely to be the predators online, and that I can definitely use for my argument. This is a pretty decent source for my paper, because I can use it to reference back too about the positives of online dating. I do plan on making that a paragraph in my final paper, so this will be beneficial to me.

brittany lace smith's insight:

What Is Your Opinion about Online Dating. 2009. By Sylvia and Tiffany. Web. 7 Apr. 2014. <http://sylviatiffany.blogspot.com/>. My image for one of sources is a pie chart of different percentages about online dating. There are three choices, it is good, it is bad and I do not know. I found this image on Google, but it linked to a website. Underneath the picture, it talked about the picture and the different percentages. I plan to talk about this picture in my statistics paragraph. I think that it would go perfectly together. There was not a lot to the image, but I can use the explanation underneath the picture to help back my facts up. I like this image because it shows how many people agree and disagree with online dating. It is helpful for my research paper and will be used as a reference.

I agree with the majority vote that this graph depicts. Online Dating is starting to lose the taboo around the usage and effects of it. Meeting a couple and them telling you that they met on said website no longer feels odd or socially incorrect - it is part of the new norm.

Interview With Mark Brooks About Online Dating Scammers - Online Personals Watch: News on the Dating Industry and Business

Interview With Mark Brooks About Online Dating Scammers - Online Personals Watch: News on the Dating Industry and Business | MWA3 | Scoop.it
YAHOO NEWS - Feb 17 - In Britain, £24.5M is lost every year to online dating scams. That figure might be a serious underestimate, according to Mark Brooks, Editor of OnlinePersonalsWatch. Many victims are so ashamed and distraught that the perpetrator is never prosecuted. Q: If you’ve ‘known’ each other for months, are you safe? A: No. Scammers often do this full time. It usually takes a few months to build up to the 'I need money for a kidney operation or I'll die' type scam. Q: Can you spot scammers by looking at their profiles? A: The line of communication is the give away. If they want you to get off the dating site asap, that's a sign. People should do a video or real life date. Q: Are there details I should leave off my profile, in case I’m targeted? A: The religiously inclined are targeted. Older women are also targeted because its tough to find a hot older gentleman. Q: I am worried my ‘new romance’ might not be what it seems - what can I do? A: Call your local police department and notify the dating site. I like the 419eater.com approach. Most dating sites have...

Brooks, Mark. "Interview with Mark Brooks about Online Dating Scammers." Interview by Rob Waugh. Online Personals Watch. N.p., 17 Feb. 2014. Web. 4 Apr. 2014. <http://www.onlinepersonalswatch.com/news/2014/02/interview-with-mark-brooks-about-online-dating-scam.html>. This interview is about online dating scammers, which is a really good example that I will be able to use. It would only let me view a short amount of the interview, but in the few questions it asks, it gets it’s point across. Mark Brooks makes a very good point about video chatting before you meet, and none of my other sources mentions that. I think that is a very good point to make in my paper, so that’ is one of the main reasons I chose to use this interview. It does not give me a lot of information but it talks about scammers, and who is targeted most. I like this little interview and I think it will fit well into my paper.

Dangers of Online Dating | eHow

Dangers of Online Dating | eHow | MWA3 | Scoop.it
The dangers of online dating include theft, rape and death. While these threats may seem extreme, users who log in have anonymity and predators use online personas to lure potential victims. Online dating may be one of the fastest growing social interactions of the 21st century, but people who consider online dating should exercise caution and...

"Dangers of Online Dating." eHow. Demand Media, 28 Jan. 2009. Web. 4 Apr. 2014. <http://www.ehow.com/about_4743354_dangers-online-dating.html>; . This is my second source of my choice article that I chose. The whole entire article talks about all the different dangers of online dating. The article is broken down into five different parts. Significance, Function, Types, Misconceptions and Warning. All five of those topics all help me in explaining why online dating is so dangerous and bad to do. Warning and Misconceptions are the two main topics in the article I focused more on. They support my paper more than the other three topics. Warning gives a lot of good advice for what to do if you decide to online date, which is a paragraph I plan on putting in my actual paper. I need this source to help me explain my reasons for why I think online dating is so bad and dangerous. Out of all the articles I looked through online, this one and the buzzle article were my favorites. They both give me a lot of facts and statements about online dating that I will need for my paper.

Online Dating Vs. Offline Dating: Pros and Cons

Online Dating Vs. Offline Dating: Pros and Cons | MWA3 | Scoop.it
There are so many more options available to singles dating in the digital age, yet so many can't seem to connect. What's a single dater to do?
brittany lace smith's insight:

“Online Dating Vs. Offline Dating: Pros and Cons.” Article. Huffington Post, 3 Oct 2013. Web. 2 April 2014. <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/04/college-textbook-prices-increase_n_2409153.html>. My second source is a newspaper article from the Huffington Post talking about the different pros and cons for online dating and also offline dating. I think this article is a good source for my paper because it not only gives cons for online dating, but the article gives pros for offline dating. It states statistics and a lot of really good facts that can back up my argument. The author of the article thinks singles should do both online and offline, so that’s why I like this one so much. She is not bias towards one opinion. She gives both good and bad opinions for online and offline. She does a good job of talking about all the dangers of online dating, the lies people can tell, and that is what my main argument is. This article is going to be a very useful part of my paper.

Online Dating

brittany lace smith's insight:

Finkel E. J, Eastwick P. W., Karney B. R., Reis H. T., Sprecher S. (2012). Online Dating: A critical analysis from the perspective of psychological science. Psychological Science in the Public Interest, 13(1), 3-66. <http://psi.sagepub.com/content/13/1/1.full?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&title=Online+dating&andorexacttitle=and&andorexacttitleabs=and&andorexactfulltext=and&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&tdate=4/30/2014&resourcetype=HWCIT>; . My last source is a very long complex scholarly journal about online dating. The article I chose, I had to re-read a lot of times, because it confused me. There was so much going on throughout the article, and so many different topics were talked about regarding online dating. I am more use to reading simple articles, not really complex ones. The article gives a ton of great useful information. It gives good examples of why using online dating sites are good, bad and it talks about the different dating cites. I am going to use this scholarly journal because it has a lot of good explanations in it. It will help me get my point across that I think online dating is not a good thing. If I quote some of the things the author’s said, it should back my facts up pretty well. I think this is a really great source to use for my paper. I plan on trying to put most of the information that I understood in my paper.

Six Dangers of Online Dating

Six Dangers of Online Dating | MWA3 | Scoop.it
Let it be known: I am not a big fan of online dating. Yes, at least one of my best friends found her fabulous fiancé online. And if you live in a small town, or fit a specific demographic (e.g., woman over 45, ultra-busy businessperson, sugar daddy, sneaking around your spouse), online dating may expand opportunities for you. But for the rest of us, we're much better off meeting real live humans eye-to-eye the way nature intended.
brittany lace smith's insight:

Binazir, Ali. (2011, September 26). Six Dangers of Online Dating. <http://www.blogher.com/six-reasons-why-online-dating-sucks>. I really liked this blog because it gave a lot of other personal opinions about online dating. This whole blog was pretty much agreeing with my argument, so I really liked that I found this. I plan on using a lot of the information on this blog to support me in my opinions. He talks about six big reasons why he thinks online dating is bad, and then there is a lot of other people’s opinions to what he said at the bottom. When I scrolled through and read some of the other’s opinions it was interesting to see what others think about the topic. I do not normally read blogs, but this was a very interesting one. I mainly chose this source because it doesn’t talk at all about the good parts of online dating. It is strictly about the negatives and I do not have another source like this one.

Dr. Phil.com

Dr. Phil has galvanized millions of people to 'get real.' Find out more about him and his show.
brittany lace smith's insight:

“Staying Safe in Cyberspace.” Narr. By Dr.Phil. Dr.Phil. CBS, 2013. Web. 4 April 2014. Trascript. <http://www.drphil.com/slideshows/slideshow/3327/?id=3327&slide=0&showID=740&preview=&versionID=>; . I found a broadcast transcript on one of the Dr. Phil episodes talking about online dating. Throughout the broadcast Dr. Phil is talking to a woman about her trying to find love on the internet. He talks to her about the different problems that could end up going wrong, and also the positives that could come out of it. Dr. Phil gives her a lot of great advice on what to do to be careful when you are online dating. He gives her a list of things that she needs to do if she is going to choose to online date, which I think that list will make a good reference for my paper. I can quote Dr. Phil on his advice and use some the facts he mentions to support my claims. I thought this was a really good transcript because it goes right along with my topic and helps me a lot with getting more information to use on my paper. I started out not really knowing what I was going to write about, but after reading his advice, and her response, I think this broadcast helped me out a lot.

Online Dating Statistics

Online Dating Statistics | MWA3 | Scoop.it
The online dating statistics given below reveal some startling facts about this new trend. These facts also make you aware of the dangers lurking behind the safety veil of Internet.
brittany lace smith's insight:

Shashank, Nakate. “Online Dating Statistics.” Buzzle.com. 23 Jan 2012. Web. 2 April 2014. <http://www.buzzle.com/articles/online-dating-statistics.html>. This source is an online article I got to choose for my paper. We had two sources that we could pick on our own, and when I found this online, I knew I had to use it. I think this article is one of the main sources I plan to use for my paper. It is about two pages long, filled with statistics about online dating. Half of the paper is about statistics of online dating, and the other half is about dangers of online dating. Those are my main two topics for my paper. It has a lot of good information that I plan to use to back up my argument. The article talks about how many people use online dating services, what can happen to people who use the services and how many people get fooled by using the dating services. I thought this would give me a lot of facts to support my paper.

Manti Te'o's 'Catfish' Trap, Online Dating Scam Phenomenon - YouTube

Notre Dame football player said to have been duped into online relationship with fake girlfriend.
brittany lace smith's insight:

Manti Te’O’s ‘Catfish’ Trap, Online Dating Scam Phenomenon. 18 January 2013. YouTube. Web. 4 April 2014. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36mCV6VtNTY> .The source I chose is a YouTube clip from the MTV series Catfish. I thought this would be a good example to use for my paper because it shows all the negatives that can come from online dating. It shows several of the people from the show, and none of them found their perfect soul mate using online dating. They were all tricked into believing that the person they were talking too was someone else. They thought they were talking to this beautiful person they seen online, but in reality they were talking to a totally different person. This goes perfect with my argument of online dating is dangerous and a bad idea, because you have a big chance of being lied to on the internet, and falling for someone who is not even real. I think this goes perfect with my paper and will be a huge help supporting my argument of how online dating is not a good option.
