"Google is announcing today that it's working together with Microsoft on a new YouTube application for Windows Phone. Following a fight with Microsoft over its unauthorized YouTube app, the pair appear to have resolved some of their differences. Google demanded that Microsoft should remove its app by May 22nd, but Microsoft issued an update to address some of Google's concerns earlier this week."

"Starting today, we’re launching a pilot program for a small group of partners that will offer paid channels on YouTube with subscription fees starting at $0.99 per month. Every channel has a 14-day free trial, and many offer discounted yearly rates. For example, Sesame Street will be offering full episodes on their paid channel when it launches. And UFC fans can see classic fights, like a full version of their first event from UFC’s new channel. You might run into more of these channels across YouTube, or look here for a list of pilot channels."

"With sales of mobile devices now outpacing those of desktop PCs, web designers face a challenge: how to best present content across all these devices. Smartphone screens average around 4” diagonally, tablets are 7" to 10", laptops average around 14" and desktop monitors go up to 30" these days. All these different devices result in screens of varying shapes and sizes. This presents a challenge when laying out a page - how to provide a viewing experience that looks good on every screen. One solution is responsive design."

"Now you have the flexibility to choose between either captions or interactive transcripts for any of your videos. And even better, you can order the captions from us (just like transcripts) or you can upload (and edit!) your own .SRT files. What's a .SRT file? It's a human-editable, human-readable text file that you can create from scratch."
Fraunhofer IIS and Unified Streaming (USP) have begun a collaboratin designed to extend the ecosystem for HE-AAC MPEG-DASH streaming, enabling broadcasters and service providers to deliver the best possible MPEG-DASH (dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP) streaming experience for video and audio-only services. The two parties say that HE-AAC has emerged as the global standard for broadcasting and streaming multimedia content, including Internet radio or Web TV, digital radio and digital television. It is natively supported by Android Jelly Bean, iOS, Windows 7/8, Mac OS, the leading HTML5 browsers. Therefore, says Fraunhofer and USP, service providers in many cases only need to encode their content in a single audio format, HE-AAC Multichannel.

"Netflix users on Windows and OS X currently depend on Microsoft's Silverlight plugin to watch videos. With Silverlight no longer under active development, the company is looking at alternative delivery systems for its app-free, browser-based video delivery. The answer it's picked is, unsurprisingly, HTML5, but as the company details in a blog post, it's not up to the challenge just yet. The sticking point, again unsurprisingly, is DRM. Netflix's Silverlight player protects the content that it plays, and the company needs to maintain a similar level of protection in its HTML5 successor."

"Throughout all the turmoil of the last year, video has remained an important anchor for Yahoo! The site has remained 4th or 5th most popular video site for at least the last year according to Comscore’s online video rankings. In terms of time spent, the company does even better holding the 2nd or 3rd spot with monthly time spent per viewer in the 50-60 minute range. However, there is plenty of room for improvement. Google sites, of course, continue to dominate online rankings. More disturbing is the fact that Facebook has consistently attracted more video viewers than Yahoo! over the last few months."

"A new codec war is looming! The peaceful reign of H.264 is over, the end is nigh, and HEVC is ready to battle to prove its worth, steal the crown and prove itself the one true king (guess who just got caught up on Game of Thrones?). Except of course, none of this is true. The sky is not falling, the end is not near, and the Dothraki aren’t getting ready to storm anything."

"This doesn’t mean HDS is going away, but HDS is a protocol only targeting Flash / AIR, while HLS works across the majority of devices. If you are aiming for a single workflow, HLS is the only logical choice. That said, besides philosophical reasons, there are technical disadvantages of using HLS, which will eventually lead to MPEG-Dash as a unified standard in the future. If you are interested in learning more about MPEG-Dash, join my MPEG-Dash group."
