Reason is running a very interesting review of a new book by Alex Sayf Cummings, called Democracy of Sound: Music Piracy and the Remaking of American Copyright in the Twentieth Century. It reiterates many of the points that we've made before about music and copyright, but with a strong historical basis, highlighting how these issues are not new. In fact, it reiterates how Congress was quite concerned that putting copyright on recordings was a very dangerous mistake:

Music copyright gives the artist particular rights of reproduction , performing and sale of the music. Music copyright is divided into sound recording copyright and copyright of the composition itself. Music copyright is important because it makes sure that artists get from the music they produce. The copyright requires every individual to pay for recording, selling and distributing the music. Therefore, it ensures musicians earn their rightful profits by preventing music piracy. Music copyright is important to eliminate legal battles among musicians over who owns a particular song. However, listeners who need to pay for all the music they want to listen to.
