The current landscape of music discovery and streaming stretches out like the solar system: There are heavy planets like Spotify and iTunes and stars like Rdio and Pandora. There are galaxies in between: Beats is attempting to relaunch after a disappointing intro by Apple; Neil Young’s Pono player (which has been deemed bullshit) and Deezer are trying to snag the audiophile. Domino.fm is channeling music blogs for discovery. But until Jay Z takes over, Spotify is still one of the most popular destinations for music discovery.

A little over a year ago, I declared streaming music the next major music industry ice age. The Enterprising Fans of New Music: When Listeners Become Their Own Music Supervisor

The Enterprising Fans of New Music: When Listeners Become Their Own Music Supervisor | Musicbiz | Scoop.it

By themselves, any of the numbers are sobering for broadcast radio. In the 2015 version of Edison Research's "Infinite Dial" survey, respondents between ages 12-to-24  who say that it is "very important" or "somewhat important" to keep up with new music say the source they use most to keep up-to-date is "friends and family" at 28 percent.  This is followed by YouTube and then Pandora. Only 8 percent of 12-24s cite AM/FM Radio as their top source, just ahead of Spotify (7 percent).
