The music industry’s newfangled growth business: vinyl records

The music industry’s newfangled growth business: vinyl records | Musicbiz | Scoop.it

The equation facing the music business is now well understood: Sales of CDs and digital music downloads are in what looks like a death spiral, while streaming music services are adding subscribers and increasing revenues but not yet profits. But another corner of the music business is experiencing rapid growth: old-fashioned vinyl records. According to the latest numbers ...

Isaiah Ho Ser Jia's curator insight, July 22, 12:08 PM

Vinyl Records in the U.S are up more than 40% in the first 6 months of 2014, with 4 million units sold. In 2013, vinyl sales hit their highest level since 1991, with 6 million units sold. This highlights that vinyl records are still able to survive in the Music Industry as a niche market. The usage of statistics and visuals help to highlight the steady growth in vinyl record sales over the years.

Despite the increase in vinyl records, it is still unable to make up for the decrease in the number of CD sales. Additionally, although online streaming is continuing to flourish, it is still not able to make up for the decline in music ownership yet. However, if this trend continues in the long run, the gap between revenue can be reduced in a couple of years. Hence, despite the gradual shift towards the online platforms for the music industry, the traditional platforms are still surviving despite the decreasing revenue and music ownership.
