If you recently saw a person driving a park bench through the streets of San Francisco, don't worry – you're not crazy, and neither is the rider. Everything I need to know, I learned in music class

Everything I need to know, I learned in music class | Music, Theatre, and Dance | Scoop.it

But through that transition, I’ve realized why music needs to be a cornerstone of education. Music is an art and a science, and it's one of the best ways kids can learn  creativity and those mythical critical thinking skills. The focus of the curriculum isn’t forcing everyone to learn about Bach or Mozart. It’s about learning how to think, rather than what to think.

Rachel Roche's curator insight, May 7, 2013 7:31 AM

Why do you think Music is an important subject to learn?  Other than learning how to read notes of a sheet, what else can you learn from studying Music?

Fender Music Foundation's curator insight, December 9, 2013 6:02 PM

This editor sees a correlation between music #education and business with compelling real life examples.

Dorian Jones's curator insight, October 11, 2015 1:04 AM

There are so many aspects to learning an instrument one person may not realize. You learn a whole new system of reading, like another language. You also have to define different terminology used in music. On top of keeping with time and working together as a whole. Your ears are working nonstop to listen to pitches. You mind literally goes on an overdrive to strive for perfection.

From Gangnam Style to the Harlem Shake, Why We Just Can’t Resist a Dance Craze - | Music, Theatre, and Dance | Scoop.it

Much of the same can be said for the Harlem Shake’s immediate dance craze predecessor, “Gangnam Style.” In “Gangnam Style Decoded,” the Global Post’s Asia Editor Emily Lodish suggests that the popularity of South Korean rapper Psy’s song—which launched the now famous horse dancing routine—can be explained by its “mix of the familiar and the erotic,” which she credits as a recurring “recipe for success” where dance crazes are concerned.

The Problematics of the Fake Harlem Shake

This fake Harlem Shake meme has become so ubiquitous that it has been “performed” by the English National Ballet, and gone further globally with a video from the Norwegian army, and in Tunisia and Egypt, where the song and imitation dance has become a protest anthem.

The irony of an African-American cultural relic being white-washed to the point where other people of color perform its bastardized version is not lost, and this takes on a whole new level as teams with majority African-American members such as the Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets add to the fake Shake canon.
