Robin Thicke, Marvin Gaye, and the blurred line between inspiration and infringement

Robin Thicke, Marvin Gaye, and the blurred line between inspiration and infringement | Music, Theatre, and Dance | Scoop.it

Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines has been a pop-music juggernaut: the year’s best selling song in the United States and the UK is entering its 11th week at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. When it was initially released many noted that it was reminiscent of Marvin Gaye’s hit Got to Give It Up. Claudio Matta's curator insight, March 13, 2014 12:20 PM

This article shows very good examples of evidence about how Spotify and Pandora pay peanuts to very recognized and successful artists like David Lowery, singer-guitarist of Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven, Thom Yorke of Radiohead and producer Nigel Godrich.

I disagree in the "streaming music is not the digital equivalent of radio" point because for me it actually is the equivalent of radio and I think that artists should definitely get paid what they deserve for each stream, which is a lot more than they're getting right now. Therefore, I do think it is a problem that artists are getting paid peanuts from streaming services.

Most American playgoers owe a great debt to translators. Were it not for their work, few of us would be able to enjoy the plays of Chekhov, Ibsen or Molière. Yet literary translators are the perpetually unsung heroes and heroines of literature.

Techne: Content Providers

Techne: Content Providers | Music, Theatre, and Dance | Scoop.it

We often consider technology an imposition on both our craft and our business: social media putting pressure on everything from marketing to performance, for example, or IT budgets draining resources from “more important” work. But the etymological root of technology is techne: the Greek word for art. To paraphrase cartoonist Walt Kelly, we have met the enemy, and it is us.
