"We feel like theater is a powerful platform for kids to be heard," said Katie Cappiello, cofounder of theAll-Girl Theater Company , along with Meg McInerney, a fellow NYU Tisch graduate. With that intention, Cappiello and McInerney founded the All-Girl Theater Company in 2007 after deciding to pursue their common passion for teaching. The company offers girls aged 9 to 18 in the New York tristate area with intensive training in method-based acting technique as well as with opportunities to collaborate on original material.

Unfortunately, with regard to women, their stories, and their valuable lives valued onstage, the American theater right now is a mirror, not a lens. We look backward (like mirrors do), we look at ourselves (like mirrors do), and we show the world as it is, not as it should be. That doesn’t sound like an urgent art form to me. That sounds safe. That sounds easy. That sounds boring.

American Cantorate

This collection contains the raw data of the “History of the American Cantorate” project, which was designed and executed by Mark Slobin in 1984-86 under a grant from the Natonal Endowment for the Humanities awarded to the Cantors Assembly, a professional society. Included are 1) listenable interviews with a cross-section of cantors from the Cantors Assembly (Conservative) and American Conference of Cantors (Reform) Cantorial Council of America (Orthodox), and the Women Cantors Network, 2) the entire set of sung samples that 93 cantors submitted for purposes of music analysis 3) questionnaire responses from members of the CA, ACC, and congregational lay leadership 4) letters from rabbis about the cantorate 5) ancillary materials.
