Neil Harbisson: Escucha el color | Music & relax | Scoop.it

The Magic and Logic of Powerful Public Speaking: TED Curator Chris Anderson’s Field Guide to Giving a Great Talk

The Magic and Logic of Powerful Public Speaking: TED Curator Chris Anderson’s Field Guide to Giving a Great Talk | Music & relax | Scoop.it
“Words are events, they do things, change things,” Ursula K. Le Guin wrote in her sublime reflection on telling and listening. “They transform both speaker and hearer; they feed energy back and forth and amplify it. They feed understanding or emotion back and forth and amplify it.” This mutual transformation takes place in a special atmosphere that exists in no other realm of life — one Paul Goodman captured beautifully in his taxonomy of the nine kinds of silence, among which he listed “the silence of listening to another speak, catching the drift and helping him be clear.”

The architecture of that singular atmosphere is what TED curator Chris Anderson explores in TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking (public library) — a contemporary counterpart to George Plimptom’s advice on public speaking, drawing on Anderson’s experience in hosting some of the most electrifying, inspiring, and mobilizing idea-packets of our time, delivered from the TED stage to more than a billion people around the world who hunger for intellectual, creative, and spiritual nourishment.

Teach teachers how to create magic

Teach teachers how to create magic | Music & relax | Scoop.it

What do rap shows, barbershop banter and Sunday services have in common? As Christopher Emdin says, they all hold the secret magic to enthrall and teach at the same time — and it's a skill we often don't teach to educators. A longtime teacher himself, now a science advocate and cofounder of Science Genius B.A.T.T.L.E.S. with the GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, Emdin offers a vision to make the classroom come alive.

What a great TED talk! Here Uri Hasson goes through the research on how listener's brains react to a story. The research also shows the coupling that occurs between the storyteller's brain and the listener's brain.

It's terrific stuff and solid research using MRIs. I use this all the time in my workshops. Don't miss it.

85,000 Classical Music Scores (and Free MP3s) on the Web

85,000 Classical Music Scores (and Free MP3s) on the Web | Music & relax | Scoop.it
Worth a quick mention: The New York Times ran a story yesterday profiling the International Music Score Library Project, a crowdsourced web site that indexes classical music scores (though not without raising some copyright concerns along the way). IMSL hosts 85,000 scores with several thousand new ones coming online every month. You can find Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 – in short, the major ones along with the minor ones. And, in some cases, the archive includes audio recordings. Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker offers an example. You can find a full list of free audio recordings (arranged by composer) here.

Rock and roll hagiography presents us with a canon of instrumental saints, guitar gods, drum demiurges, bass demons. It’s true, the frontman has often enjoyed a near-messianic status (it’s almost always been a man), but rock history has granted less authority to the voice as an instrument and allowed for all kinds of non-traditional—and not always particularly pleasant or accomplished—voices. The influence and imitation of folk and blues and the rise of punk and metal has given rock singers plenty of license to growl, howl, mumble, scream, and moan instead of singing in any classical sense.

A Mil Besos De Profundidad @amilbesos: El Cine de Franck Capra

A Mil Besos De Profundidad @amilbesos: El Cine de Franck Capra | Music & relax | Scoop.it
