No formal training is necessary to obtain a music producer job. However, the music producer job consists of managing the artist, obtaining satisfactory financial gain for the artist's product, and handling technical situations for the completion of the product.  In light of these requirements, I do not think a serious artist would hire a music producer without the proper credentials.  The role of producer is much too significant to hand over the reigns of a masterpiece without careful consideration and adequate qualifications being met.

hifi studio recording was one of the first audio producing advancements.  it took over the realm of music producing mastery by allowing producer to cut and edit tapes and record for longer amounts of time.  producers had to have the whole band play at once but now multiple takes can be done, cut and pasted together to a new one to splice two good takes.  Editing became easier and the "high fidelty appealed to the public as sounding way better.
