Indie Anthems Mixtape Curates 20 Artists That Should Have Played SXSW

Indie Anthems Mixtape Curates 20 Artists That Should Have Played SXSW | Music News | Scoop.it

Released as a private digital download card to the attendees during last week’s SXSW Music Festival, the Indie Anthems mixtape touts the creme de la creme of the unsigned and indie talent pool-talent that was noticeably absent from the festivals stages, but managed to gain new listeners just the same.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

WiFi PR Group released Indie Anthems Vol. 10, the latest installment in their respected unsigned and indie curated  digital mixtape series. The limited edition free download was distributed during SXSW as a private download for festival-goers to premiere. before it was released to the public.

The lineup packs an eclectic mix of fresh sounds in hip-hop, indie, rock, urban, electronica and more. It’s a who’s Who list of all the independent and unsigned bands that are considered next level deal worthy but were ironically missing from this years SXSW stages, held last week in Austin, TX from March 16-23. The event draws over 150,000 people from all over the world and while thousands of Indie Anthems Vol. 10 download cards were handed out during SXSW, WiFi PR expects that  even more new listeners will come from post SXSW coverage on Indie Anthems, following the event.

The potential of a digital mixtape series makes it possible for artists, like the ones that appear on Indie Anthems Vol.10, to attract new listeners from SXSW without actually performing there. While none of the artists on the mixtape performed at SXSW this year, the mixtape connects them to its audience. When music fans and industry tastemakers look for new artists to add to their rosters and playlists, they often turn to recommendations and industry-curated playlists to find up-and-coming artists gaining recognition by the media and record labels.

While most mixtapes, particularly for independent artists, are created for music fans alone, WiFi PR curates the Indie Anthems series to fit the agendas of industry veterans and millennial content creators, who typically license independent music. Between YouTube, music streaming services, blogs and other streaming content,  the amount of music available overwhelms music lovers, content creators and experts, and it can be difficult to wade through it all . Indie Anthems Vol. 10  solves that problem with a line up that delivers fresh talent—the kind of talent that belongs on the big stage.

Indie Anthems Vol. 10 is now available as a limited edition free download on its Bandcamp page, but only 2000 download copies are available for a limited time.

WiFi PR will release more Indie Anthems additions throughout the year, including upcoming volumes set to be released during Coachella and Lollapalooza in August. Past iterations of Indie Anthems can be found on the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page.

Engine Launches Texas Tour After Dropping New Music Video

Engine Launches Texas Tour After Dropping New Music Video | Music News | Scoop.it

Engine refreshes the indie scene with a new, action-packed music video and coordinated tour in the southern central U.S.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

Four albums and several music videos and performances in, Louisiana-based Engine have done well to establish their unique genre, a space-western spinoff that also embraces Caddo-American folk rock and psychedelic gospel. For an offbeat comparison, think psychedelic era Beatles’ instrumentals meets lyrical influences from Bright Eyes meets an art-rock allure sourced from Arcade Fire. The resulting product is a mishmash harnessed by young talent, who have crafted their own distinct niche and are working tirelessly to share it with the music world.

Part of this expanded reach for their music is the release of several albums. The band has recorded and self-published an EP and four full-length albums, the latest of which is Red Moon Rises. For this last album, Engine proudly took the reins to record, produce and press the album to vinyl themselves. Their latest efforts have been to rigorously promote the album in their northern Louisiana community and beyond.

Hot off Red Moon Rises, “High Noon” has now been made into a music video, which, like the band’s other videos, embraces storytelling and focuses on visual aspects of bringing their music to life. Set up like an-old school black-and-white film, the video features—what else?—a guy in a space suit poking around earth, dodging laser gunfire, and fighting an angry, face-painted mob. The video’s soundtrack is purely instrumental until the spaceman has to dodge laser fire, but everything from the music’s buildup to the rising intensity of the vocals fits well into the action scene that unfolds.

To promote their new music video, Engine toured across Texas, and has one date in Louisiana. Upcoming show dates include:

Mon., March 16 w/ Cory Taylor Cox, Spoken Nerd - Bear's on Fairfield, Shreveport, LA

Last year, Engine had their track “Whiskey Hymnal” featured on an installment of WiFi PR Group’s digital mixtape series, Indie Anthems, which was released at Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival in July 2014. The band’s track comingled with songs from other up-and-coming indie artists spanning a wide range of genre, all of whom gained national and even international exposure from the festival and online promotion as well. Listen or grab a download of Indie Anthems, including Engine’s track, on Bandcamp.

For more information about show dates, music and the band itself, check out Engine’s new website, where you can buy their albums and watch a slew of music videos.

Album Review: Flying Vaginas Release And That’s Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

Album Review: Flying Vaginas Release And That’s Why We Can’t Have Nice Things | Music News | Scoop.it

Flying Vaginas' debut album, And That’s Why We Can’t Have Nice Things (2014), demonstrates the seriousness of their dedication to the music they create and pulls out all the stops you’d imagine a true shoegaze band would.

Wifi PR Group's insight:
With a band name like Flying Vaginas, it’s no surprise that the band members carry such aliases as Well Worn Banana (guitars, vocals), Disappointed Kiwi (bass, vocals) and Angry Pineapple (drums, synths). But this Italian trio’s debut album, And That’s Why We Can’t Have Nice Things (2014), demonstrates the seriousness of their dedication to the music they create and pulls out all the stops you’d imagine a true shoegaze band would. It leaves the listener with a sound similar to Yo La Tengo, My Bloody Valentine, Yuck and The Babies, to name a few.

On the album, the common thread is that everything is coated with that airy, almost synthetic distorted feel of shoegaze that always sounds like the mixer slightly tweaked the sound with a light smoky wind sweeping across the instruments and vocals. As Distorsioni puts it, “It comes out of brilliant, cerebral pop, reverberated from the game of balance between light and shadow, by a clever use of the tuning and distortion even with classical and minimal instrumentation.”

The album starts off with “Wake,” a solemn, fuzzy track with whimsical vocals that float gently over slowly shifting synth chords that give the whole piece a heavy feeling you can sink into a cozy chair with. But the feeling doesn’t last for long when the next track, “Happiness and Flour” takes over with bouncy percussion and a bright guitar melody. The vocals are still dreamy and ethereal like wispy cirrus clouds passing overhead, and the fuzz continues to hug each note that comes out of every instrument. Both keep the track grounded in shoegaze while toying with elements of indie rock as well.

Flying Vaginas may be irreverent as a concept, but the music they create couldn’t be revered more as they’ve carefully spliced together every layer of sound on this album. Listeners get a complete feel of the sheer emotion and force behind these musicians’ passion for the music they create, and this debut opens up the gates to exciting possibilities for a hot new Italian band making a name for themselves in the national scene.

Listen to Flying Vaginas’ And That’s Why We Can’t Have Nice Things, released by Mia Cameretta Records, on Bandcamp.

Album Review: Ursina Stretches Vocal Prowess With Hiding Behind A Mask EP

Album Review: Ursina Stretches Vocal Prowess With Hiding Behind A Mask EP | Music News | Scoop.it

Fresh out of Switzerland, award-winning vocalist Ursina shines on her latest effort, the Hiding Behind A Mask EP, which demonstrates the path she’s taken with her music and the maturity her music has experienced as she progresses through her music career.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

Fresh out of Switzerland, award-winning vocalist Ursina received much praise for her 2013 recording, the EP Time Is a Thief, and she’s followed up that album with her latest effort, the Hiding Behind A Mask EP. The album demonstrates the path she’s taken with her music and the maturity her music has experienced as she progresses through her music career.

On the album, Ursina’s voice encompasses the crispness of living in a glacial and mountainous background with the softness of pop and folk music. Her music creates a sound that is folk pop with hints of an indie rock feel and a downtempo rhythm that brings everything into one ethereal but delicate package.

Ursina was inspired early in her musical journey by artists like Billie Holiday, Feist, Tom Waits and Jeff Buckley, influences you can hear periodically in her unique sound. She was also directly influenced by classical music and the folk songs written in her native tongue, Romansh, which is a lesser known language used only in the eastern Swiss Alps. This language is seamlessly weaved with English on her Hiding Behind A Mask EP, which lends an exotic lyricism to her recording. She mainly writes her lyrics to capture her own personal experiences and those of the people around her, grounding her music in realism and concepts listeners can readily relate to.

Her mother tongue Romash can be heard on two of her tracks, “Quel ch’el ei” and “Adia.” “Quel ch’el ei” is one of the more upbeat songs on the EP, with bright percussion backing her light, smooth singing in the verses and soaring vocals in the chorus. “Adia” takes a slightly different approach with sweeping percussion sounds that mimic the sounds of wind blowing swiftly across the ocean. Her voice takes on an almost haunting quality as it floats above the wind, slow and steady in a beautiful language you only wish you knew how to translate.

The album’s opening track, “Fit In,” kicks off the album with a fun, offbeat and uptempo rhythm with lyrical melodies that bend and twist to exude an expressive and emotional feeling. These emotive lines grip the listener, particularly in the chorus and when her voice holds a solitary high note in the bridge. This track was featured on WiFi PR Group’s Indie Anthems Vol. 9, where she joined other international independent artists spanning a wide range of genres. The digital mixtape was handed out at CMJ Music Marathon in October 2014, and 1,500 download copies are available on the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page.

Ursina and her band released their first music video in late 2014 for “Masks,” off this latest EP. Ursina plans to follow Hiding Behind A Mask with a full-length recording, which she’s currently writing and plans to release in 2015.

Artist Spotlight: Canadian Hip-hop Artist YOU Is All Real, All the Time

Artist Spotlight: Canadian Hip-hop Artist YOU Is All Real, All the Time | Music News | Scoop.it

Nicholas Hobson, also known as YOU, is an Edmonton, Canada-based hip-hop artist who strives for “YOUnity” with his fans, who he hopes can find words and music they can relate to when they hear his beats and lyrics.

Wifi PR Group's insight:
While many artists may want to achieve the same fame and fortune as musicians before them, other artists want to carve their own path in the music world and achieve success on their own terms. Nicholas Hobson, also known as YOU, is an Edmonton, Canada-based hip-hop artist with a desire to do just that. Above all, he strives for “YOUnity” with his fans, who he hopes can find words and music they can relate to when they hear his beats and lyrics.

What drives YOU internally is to have something in his life that he can look back on and gauge his improvement from his own perspective rather than based on what a coach, boss, professor or lover says. The competition, he says, is “between me and YOU.” He describes YOUnity as a movement where someone betters himself to better the community, reaches out to others out of strength rather than desperation and seeks to understand rather than be understood.

YOU uses his music as a vehicle to achieve this purpose. Often compared to Danny Brown, but with different subject matters, YOU delivers smooth, evenly paced lines that touch on any number of concepts that he has been interested in or exposed to. Finding inspiration in such artists as Jay Electronica, Blu, Action Bronson and Sean Price, YOU has developed a penchant for ear-catching beats, ranging from dreamy and ethereal to hard-hitting and funky. His lyrics are influenced by the lack of mental blocks that would keep him away from ideas that people may not like at first. YOU is real, and he brings it all every time he steps up to the mic.

Most recently, YOU released his latest recording, the five-track EP, Costume Party Gangsta, which he dropped on Halloween this year, and he also released three new videos on his YouTube channel: “Lipstick Stained Cigarettes,” “Far Away” and “Bucket.” “Lipstick Stained Cigarettes” will also be featured on an upcoming installment of WiFi PR Group’s digital mixtape series, Indie Anthems. The compilation is a collection of international independent artists who WiFi PR wants to put on the radars of music lovers and industry tastemakers the world over, and that is soon to include YOU and his featured track.

Costume Party Gangsta is YOU’s fourth effort, following three other self-produced recordings released over the course of the year: his debut Felt Pen Sketch Book Vol. 1 (March 2014), Thievin’ for Steez (May 2014) and A Righteous Dude (July 2014), all of which are available on YOU’s Bandcamp page. His first recordings have all been back to back, released within a few of months of each other, which demonstrates the sheer amount of music, inspiration and creativity that YOU has ready to unleash on the hip-hop world.

Listen to more of YOU’s music on Bandcamp.

Artist Spotlight: Valence Brings Instrumental Music to the Mainstream

Artist Spotlight: Valence Brings Instrumental Music to the Mainstream | Music News | Scoop.it

The modern rock scene may be dominated by bands who produce both music and lyrics, but Valence is a four-piece group out of Westchester, N.Y., who is determined to take a stand for the value of purely instrumental music and its ability to tell a story even without words.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

The modern rock scene may be dominated by bands who produce both music and lyrics, but Valence is a four-piece group out of Westchester, N.Y., who is determined to take a stand for the value of purely instrumental music and its ability to tell a story even without words. And they do it with their unique, bold blend of metal, progressive rock, jam and other musical influences, which is most often compared to King Crimson, Between the Buried and Me, Animals as Leaders and Rush.

Their debut album, Sleepwalker (2012), focused on inspiring a visceral experience with the listener’s subconscious, affected by the deep thought processes that went into creating the album by the musicians themselves. However, the album has a colorful story behind it, complete with a testy landlord, recording in 90-degree heat and a number of other obstacles they overcame to create their first recording success. This is due in part to the help of an audio engineer they hired as well as a focus on album concept art and unique, eye-catching packaging. Describing Sleepwalker, Alternative Control wrote, “As far as production, this is pretty much flawless. All the instruments come through perfectly, with an almost vintage kind of feel to the sound. It reminds me a little bit of early Mastodon production.”

From there, Valence performed live whenever possible, playing with Clutch, The Sword, Consider the Source, Kayo Dot, 3 and even Andrew W.K.  The band began traveling outside their hometown area to Philadelphia and as far north as Burlington, VT (where the band played on a huge half pipe at the Burton HQ as skaters flew around them).  Their touring schedule got busier, as the band began playing four to six shows a month.

It was only a short while before Valence began working on their second record, Laser Baron (2014), recording drums in the famous Carriage House studios in Stamford, CT.  In this case, the band’s intention was indeed to tell a story, both musically and wordlessly. The story, written by guitarist Geoff Schaefer, tells of a scientist who is coerced into creating a weapon for the military, eventually breaking through space-time and showing the scientist a world where his weapon is used for oppression. It may be difficult to imagine such a complex story being told by music alone, but with a harnessed focus on harmonic language and song structure, delicate cadences and smart use of audio-induced imagery, Valence has found a way to demonstrate the utility and versatility of instrumental progressive rock fusion.

Because their music is both accessible and instrumental while not being overly repetitive, many people have been receptive to Valence’s music for media placements. Their track “The Reckoning” off Laser Baron will be featured in a short horror film, “Snap,” directed by David Uscinski, who used to catch Valence at New York’s Gotham Rocks shows. Another song off of Laser Baron will also be used for a drawing tutorial video created by Brian Allen, who did the artwork for the album. These are just two confirmed media placements, but many listeners agree that Valence’s music is a perfect fit for films and video games with its intelligent, instrumental songs.

Valence’s music is available through a number of digital outlets, such as Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and Spotify, and physical copies can be found through CD Baby, Amazon, Bandcamp and their merch booth at shows. Listeners can also stream Valence’s music on Bandcamp, Spotify and iTunes Radio. Valence is currently working on new material, trying out the songs at shows to gauge audience reaction, while focusing on booking high-quality shows, such as their Brooklyn show February 7th opening for Angel Vivaldi. Learn more, including a full schedule of shows and the actual full story behind Laser Baron, on Valence’s website.

A Course of Action Lands a Spot on the Rocklahoma Lineup

A Course of Action Lands a Spot on the Rocklahoma Lineup | Music News | Scoop.it

Rocklahoma, a Memorial Day weekend festival of rock ‘n’ roll bands, boasts an impressive lineup that features rock purveyors, A Course of Action.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

Set to be hosted May 22-24 in Pryor, Oklahoma, Rocklahoma 2015 kicks off the summer with a slew of rock bands doing the genre justice, including headliners Linkin Park, Tesla, Godsmack and Slayer. One such band is A Course of Action, out of Connelly Springs, North Carolina, who will take the Rocklahoma stage and make it into their own rock playground, performing their repertoire of songs that speak to any and all listeners. The appearance marks yet another festival stage they’ve rocked over the years.

Appealing to the common man, A Course of Action says their songs are, “taking rock back to the days when songs were written about stuff that real people relate to. It is meant to reach the common man and touch him on a level that he understands.” The band aims to touch each listener in a personal way that makes them find an emotion or memory in themselves that they can identify with through the lyrics they’re hearing.

All the while, these words are backed by music that gets them moving, having been inspired by such legends as Kiss, Van Halen, Alice in Chains, Led Zeppelin and Tool. A Course of Action is thus most commonly described as sounding like Sevendust and Alter Bridge with hints of Tool and Alice in Chains. With this in mind, the band still exudes its own unique personality in the melodies and rhythms they’ve devised. This sound can be heard on their two albums, Dark Before the Dawn (2011) and the Rocklahoma EP (2014).

A Course of Action, comprised of Jonathan Byrd (lead guitar), John Culberson (vocals, rhythm guitar), Wes Johnson (bass, backing vocals) and JT Silvestri (drums), features talented musicians with a long line of experience. In the early 90s, Byrd was in a band called Copperhead, who was signed to Mercury Records, and the other members also have longstanding musical interests.

“I don’t think anything makes you want to start playing,” said Byrd. “It’s something you are just drawn to. For me, it was a calling, not a choice.”

Over the years, A Course of Action has had a number of opportunities for large-scale live performances. In 2008, they did a USO-type tour overseas for the troops, when they visited Singapore and Diego Garcia for three weeks. In 2013, they performed at an unofficial showcase for SXSW. And in 2014, they performed at Rocklahoma, which led to still another opportunity: being hand-picked to be main stage performers at the Sturgis Bike Rally with Sevendust and Buckcherry. Their upcoming performance at Rocklahoma is the latest major appearance they’ll have, and there’s no slowing in their festival bookings.

In addition to these performances, A Course of Action has also shared the stage with a number of significant artists, particularly in the past 18 months. They include Winger, Saliva, Saving Abel, Eye Empire, Mindset Evolution and Tantric, to name a few.

Another upcoming recording appearance will be a featured track on WiFi PR Group’s Indie Anthems Vol. 10, a collection of international independent artists who WiFi PR wants to put on the radar of music lovers and industry tastemakers the world over. Set to be released at SXSW, this digital mixtape will be handed out on 3,500 download cards to festival attendees, and 1,500 download copies will be made available on the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page.

Rock lovers need to catch A Course of Action’s upcoming performance at Rocklahoma 2015, where the band will be speaking to every listener in the audience with rock music that grooves them and lyrics that move them. In the meantime, listeners can check out the band’s music on ReverbNation or SoundCloud or learn more about them on their website.

Album Review: Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra – Pray for Rain

Album Review: Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra – Pray for Rain | Music News | Scoop.it

Strings aren’t just set aside for Celtic or orchestral groups—they’ve found their way back into acoustic Americana on Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra’s debut studio album, Pray for Rain.

Wifi PR Group's insight:
Strings aren’t just set aside for Celtic or orchestral groups—they’ve found their way back into acoustic Americana on Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra’s debut studio album, Pray for Rain. A predominately strings-based trio, aside from occasional harmonica features, the group blends soulful Americana with shades of folk and blues to create a sound that’s often compared to artists like Tom Waits, The Black Keys and Ray Lamontagne. On Pray for Rain, Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra introduce their classic sound to a modern audience to transport them back to a simpler time with authentic string melodies in a variety of backdrops.

One of the early tracks on the album, “Cold Canary Gaslight,” was recently featured on WiFi PR Group’s Indie Anthems Vol. 9, the latest installment of the company’s independent artist digital mixtape collection, released at CMJ Music Marathon in October. The track features smooth, dreamy vocals, which Rosa Green of Savage Henry Magazine calls “simple and poetic,” as well as captivating harmonies spliced throughout. In the bridge, a velvety fiddle solo carries the song through before picking up the  main melody and settling back into another rich string line. The band has a video for the track on YouTube.

While “Cold Canary Gaslight” might take a slower, soulful approach to string music, the next track, a rendition of Howlin Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning,” is indicative of their more fun and uptempo efforts on the album. The song kicks off with a more laidback intro and first verse where the bass, banjo and fiddle hand off bites of the melody, but as the verse progresses, the strings and vocals start to show early signs of a frenzy before cutting out completely and launching into an upbeat, bouncy bridge and verse. Eventually, the frenzy starts to peek out above the main melody as each instrument picks up on a chance to offer a little kinetic improv. By the last minute of the song, strings are strummed with a vengeance, and the vocals blaze above the noise before ending on a final calm cadence. And if the listener hadn’t noticed—throughout all this, the song has no bridge.

As a whole, the album bebops between different tempos and emotions, but O’Reilly’s crooning vocals tie the entire album together as one cohesive effort. The strings are poignant and affecting, and the vocal harmonies are welcome additions to the overall Americana feel.

Listen to Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra’s Pray for Rain on Bandcamp.

Expand Your Mind With Indie Anthems’ Featured Psychedelic Tracks

Expand Your Mind With Indie Anthems’ Featured Psychedelic Tracks | Music News | Scoop.it

This trio of weekly featured tracks string together an element of psychedelia that wraps up WiFi PR Group’s Indie Anthems Vol. 9 on a mind-bending note.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

If music is like a drug, psychedelic rock and experimental sounds are the vehicle to a higher being and more complex sense of self. WiFi PR Group appreciates the mind-opening nature of psychedelic music and has chosen to end the latest installation of its indie artist digital mixtape series, Indie Anthems Vol. 9, released at CMJ Music Marathon, with three psychedelic-related tracks.

Held October 21-25 in 80+ venues throughout New York City, CMJ Music Marathon showcased more than 1,300 artists for over 125,000 attendees, who were exposed to some of the top talent in underground music. The festival is a prime source of music discovery and serves as the foundation of success for many new artists. CMJ was the perfect outlet to release Indie Anthems Vol. 9, and WiFi PR Group handed out 3,500 download cards to festival attendees to spread the word about the album’s featured indie artists.

Swiss psychedelic post metal group Parole Perse is the first psychedelic featured track of the week with their song “Labyrinth.” They followed up their 2011 self-titled demo with their debut EP, My Presence, My Shades, in March 2014, and thus far they have been most often compared to the likes of Opeth, Anathema and even Pink Floyd. They consider themselves “irrationally” attracted to music as a safe way to communicate thoughts and emotions, learn discipline and set you free from constraints to help you get to know yourself better—all of which you’ll find on this week’s featured track.

On his track “I Can Make Long Lists,” solo project Nyentek showcases the strongest psychedelic element of the three with an ear-catching experimental vibe that is driven forward by pounding keyboard melodies and synthesized beats. The lyrics are disparate, delivered in monotone spurts and organized into lists of everything from organs to famous jazz artists. They complement the funky, futuristic sound that Nyentek is playing around with, which is one that many people have not been able to compare with any other known artist. Out of Granite Springs, N.Y., he has released a slew of albums over the years, nearly one a month for a great deal of that time, and a good example of that discography can be heard on his featured Indie Anthems track.

While not directly inspired by Frank Zappa, fusion artist The Mica Project is often compared to Zappa’s earlier works, a touch of which can be heard on The Mica Project’s featured track, “Rats With Wings.” This Astoria, N.Y.-based solo multi-instrumentalist handles guitar, bass, piano and vocals on his self-titled debut album, and he fronts a signature blend of psychedelic, progressive and classic rock with hints of blues and folk. His featured track has no vocals and instead relies on the melodic progression and psychedelic elements to push the song along and wrap up the Indie Anthems track list.

Another 1,500 digital downloads of Indie Anthems Vol. 9 can now be downloaded from the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page. The previous eight Indie Anthems installments are also available for streaming and downloads, while supplies last.

Trio of Indie Anthems Vol. 9 Artists Craft Best Mesmerizing Melodies for a Hungry Audience

Trio of Indie Anthems Vol. 9 Artists Craft Best Mesmerizing Melodies for a Hungry Audience | Music News | Scoop.it

Can’t resist a good melody? This week, WiFi PR Group showcases three artists from Indie Anthems Vol. 9 who understand melodic progression and have crafted irresistible lines for the Indie Anthems audience.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

While a good melody is crucial to any song, certain artists find ways to emphasize the importance of a mesmerizing melody for the allure and longevity of a song. Think about classic Beatles melodies that stick in your head for days on end—these are the melodies that are impossible to forget. This week, WiFi PR Group features three artists from Indie Anthems Vol. 9 who understand the significance of a powerful melody and produce stunning melodies of their own on their tracks.

For a taste of the classic melodies of musicians like Tom Waits or The Black Keys, Marty O’Reilly and his band’s track “Cold Canary Gaslight” harnesses a melodic focus for the bluesy folk realm. The intro lures in listeners with a light picking melody that sounds both melancholy and hopeful at the same time based on the heart-wrenching vocals and well-placed harmonies. The most laidback of this week’s three featured tracks, Marty O’Reilly highlights the importance of an enticing and beautiful melody that can tell a story on its own without the lyrics.

Korean rocktronic trio HEO make their opening synthesizer melody an irresistible focal point for their track, “Luna,” as whispering vocals swoop in to coo listeners into a relaxed state of musical fulfillment. Making a bold statement in their home country, HEO is now making a splash in the U.S., which has landed them a coveted spot on the Indie Anthems Vol. 9 lineup and in this week’s trio of featured tracks. They offer an aesthetic akin to M83 or My Bloody Valentine while maintaining a rapturous sound that’s all their own.

Representing Boulder, Colo., smash folk is The Sun And The Moon with their track “Geneva.” To kick off this piece, a tight, driving melody is led by a deep bass line before a complementary vocal track drops in with its own melody. The vocals occasionally mirror the bass line, while also employing swooning harmonies to add complexity. The bass line remains prominent throughout the piece as opposed to the guitar featured by many other folk bands, and this is just one way this band’s uniqueness landed itself on this week’s featured Indie Anthems tracks.

Another 1,500 digital downloads of Indie Anthems Vol. 9 can now be downloaded from the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page. The previous eight Indie Anthems installments are also available for streaming and downloads, while supplies last.

Innovative Indie Anthems Electronic Artists Obliterate Fixed Genres

Innovative Indie Anthems Electronic Artists Obliterate Fixed Genres | Music News | Scoop.it

Released at CMJ Music Marathon in October, Indie Anthems Vol. 9 features three electronic artists that shatter the mold and push for what will be the latest sounds in the electronic genre.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

Who’d have thought that three independent, unsigned artists could shake the very foundations of electronic music and give the genre a makeover it wasn’t at all expecting? Featured on Indie Anthems Vol. 9, these three artists, Trinity Ward, Savant and SirensCeol, join other indie artists on the 16-track digital mixtape, the latest installment of the indie musician series from WiFi PR Group. The Indie Anthems mixtapes, released at major festivals and music events, introduce these artists to both music fans and industry tastemakers who define what is coming up next in the music world.

One of the three featured electronica artists was New Zealand’s own Trinity Ward, who produces a distinct blend of electronic music with a science fiction theme to create what he calls “scifitronica.” This sound can be heard on his Indie Anthems track “Mayak,” and it demonstrates the level of innovation that unsigned and independent artists are bringing to the music scene.

Kicking off the mixtape is another up-and-coming electronic artist, Savant of Chicago, IL, with his track, “Rise Up.” Bringing a lounge aesthetic to his genre, “electropop space opera,” Savant focuses on solid vocals as much as hard-hitting, engaging beats. He pushes his music to the masses via electronica record label, SectionZ, which is making a name for itself in supporting successful indie artists in the genre.

Another SectionZ featured artist, Burbank, CA’s SirensCeol, also made the cut for the latest installment of Indie Anthems with his track, “Feel Alright,” an original mix featuring Jeff Sontag. Fronting a catchy meld of electro house with elements of dubstep, like massive build-ups and zany drops, Savant produces music that has landed him not only contracts with SectionZ but also major performance slots, such as Electronic Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas.

In addition to these three artists pushing the envelope of electronic genre preconceptions, SectionZ is a relatively small record label, but its artists, including Savant and SirensCeol, are garnering over $1 million in sales. The label aims to “define the new sounds of electronica,” which it certainly does with these Indie Anthems artists, both of whom are paving the way for hot new sounds as well as other indie artists in the genre.

Another 1,500 digital downloads of Indie Anthems Vol. 9 can now be downloaded from the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page. The previous eight Indie Anthems installments are also available for streaming and downloads, while supplies last.

Inspired by Worldwide Deployments and a Football Injury, Tigger Clarkson Writes What’s Real

Inspired by Worldwide Deployments and a Football Injury, Tigger Clarkson Writes What’s Real | Music News | Scoop.it

With global real world experiences and a colorful music history, Tigger Clarkson of Tigger Clarkson Band creates fresh rock material, and his track “Can’t Have You (Radio Edit)” was featured on WiFi PR Group’s Indie Anthems Vol. 8.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

Fueled by the experiences of global travel with the Marine Corps, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tigger Clarkson formed the Tigger Clarkson Band as an outlet for his thoughts and passions, both lyrically and musically. After a trio of successful recordings, Tigger has most recently had his track “Can’t Have You (Radio Edit)” featured on WiFi PR Group’s indie mixtape, Indie Anthems Vol. 8.

Tigger Clarkson Band is headed up by the band’s founder and namesake who is a multi-instrumentalist tackling the roles of vocalist, guitarist and percussionist as well as songwriting and post-production. He got his start playing music after purchasing a guitar while in college. At first, he put it down out of frustration and focused instead on playing football for the United States Naval Academy.

However, two weeks later, he sustained a season-ending knee injury that immobilized him for an extended length of time. During that time, he pulled out his guitar to take his mind off the injury and loss of opportunity to play, and these many months offered him a new opportunity—to teach himself guitar and learn to write his own music and lyrics.

Later in life as a Marine Corps officer, Tigger would be deployed for seven months at a time in such destinations as Africa, Djibouti and Haiti after the country’s devastating earthquake to fly combat missions. He calls them “challenging and very unique opportunities” that opened his eyes to life outside the U.S. He says, “So many people in this world deal with horrific and exceptionally challenging circumstances, yet they still find a way to smile and appreciate life. It gave me great perspective and made me realize how fortunate I am.” Also inspired musically by such artists as Bill Withers, Del Shannon, James Taylor, Jimi Hendrix and the genre Motown, Tigger channels all of these experiences and emotions into his music, which can be heard as well as felt by his listeners.

Tigger Clarkson made his musical debut with his first recording, The Balance EP, released in 2010, the first of his three albums to all be released through Autokinetic Records. He followed up that EP with another, The Forget You EP, in 2011. His latest and greatest accomplishment was the release of his album Patience, Rhythm & Symmetry (2013), an album that he engineered, mixed and produced the majority of in addition to performing on vocals, guitars and percussion.

Tigger Clarkson most recently had his single “Can’t Have You (Radio Edit)” featured on WiFi PR Group’s indie compilation, Indie Anthems Vol. 8. It’s a collection of international independent artists who WiFi PR wants to put on the radars of music lovers and industry tastemakers the world over. Released at Indie Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles and Lollapalooza in Chicago, the 15-track digital mixtape was handed out on 3,500 download cards to festival attendees. WiFi PR has also made 1,500 more download copies available on the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page.

Tigger Clarkson is currently on hiatus from live performances while he is writing new material.

To download the Tigger Clarkson Band’s music, digital copies are available through iTunes and Amazon, and their music can also be streamed on Spotify.

Check out videos of Tigger Clarkson Band on YouTube, including “Hold Back (Radio Edit), “Lies & Confessions (Radio Edit)” and the official music video and extended album version of his Indie Anthems single, “Can’t Have You.”

Saint Pepsi Drops Exclusive Track With Cassette Collective Illuminated Paths

Saint Pepsi Drops Exclusive Track With Cassette Collective Illuminated Paths | Music News | Scoop.it

In coordination with cassette tape collective Illuminated Paths, electronic producer Saint Pepsi dropped his exclusive single, “TONIGHT” on WiFi PR’s Indie Anthems Vol. 9 at CMJ Music Marathon, which he headlined as well.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

Saving the world “one cassette at a time” is the main goal of music collective Illuminated Paths, and their buzzworthy featured artist Saint Pepsi has taken one step beyond his limited edition cassettes to release an exclusive track at CMJ Music Marathon, Oct. 21-25, a festival which he also headlined. This “vaporwave” track, “TONIGHT,” was released as part of WiFi PR Group’s indie artist digital mixtape, Indie Anthems Vol. 9, which also debuted at the festival that weekend.

Saint Pepsi, aka Ryan DeRobertis, is a young producer making a name for himself with the help of Illuminated Paths. A self-proclaimed purveyor of “future pop,” “R&B”, “liquid disco,” “slowjam” and “gibber boogie,” Saint Pepsi is an up-and-coming electronic artist with more than a dozen albums under his belt. He’s also released a breakthrough remix of “Call Me Maybe,” which introduced his prowess to the music world, and his single “Mr. Wonderful,” which has garnered nearly 300,000 listens on SoundCloud.

One of Saint Pepsi’s latest major accomplishments was his headlining performance at CMJ Music Marathon, now in its 34th year. Held at more than 80 venues throughout New York City, CMJ featured over 1,300 other artists who performed for crowds that numbered to over 125,000 by the festival’s end. Known as one of the world’s largest and most important platforms for new and emerging music discovery, CMJ was the perfect stage for Saint Pepsi, with the help of Illuminated Paths, to drop his hit “TONIGHT,” featuring Luxury Elite, for thousands of new and loyal fans.

For those who still hold dear the music-filled cassette tapes of decades past, Illuminated Paths appeases those cravings with extremely limited edition cassette-only releases: 25 DIY handmade cassettes on tape stock that’s more than 20 years old, which ensures an authentic, vintage sound. Each cassette is unique and includes label art, information and other goodies plus a digital download code so listeners can still enjoy “the newest, hippest, most innovative and boss albums” even when they’re away from their tape deck. The collective’s user base is growing wildly in parallel to the buzz surrounding its most popular featured artists, including CMJ headliner, Saint Pepsi.

Illuminated Paths also works together with Broken Machine Films, which has taken upon itself to capture footage of live bands and performances throughout the country. This is in addition to collecting rare studio outtakes and demo sessions from artists both locally and around the world. This footage is also available on Illuminated Paths’ website from time to time.

Working closely with Illuminated Paths, Saint Pepsi recently had his track “TONIGHT” featured on WiFi PR Group’s digital mixtape, Indie Anthems Vol. 9. Indie Anthems is a compilation of international independent artists who WiFi PR wants to put on the radars of industry tastemakers and music lovers the world over. Released at CMJ Music Marathon, the mixtape was handed out on 3,500 download cards to attendees. It is now available as 1,500 digital downloads that can be accessed from the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page.

More music from Illuminated Paths can be downloaded at the collective’s Bandcamp site, Tomentosa Records, Tape School and Meditations. Videos from Broken Machines Films can be found on YouTube and Vimeo.

Album Review: Nyentek Shows Off His Best Experimental Tracks on Okay, So Let’s Say…

Album Review: Nyentek Shows Off His Best Experimental Tracks on Okay, So Let’s Say… | Music News | Scoop.it

A self-proclaimed firm supporter of DIY music, New York-based artist Mislav Forrester and his project Nyentek have contributed a huge number of recordings to the experimental music space, including his most recent effort, Okay, So Let’s Say… (Jan. 2015).

Wifi PR Group's insight:

A self-proclaimed firm supporter of DIY music, New York-based artist Mislav Forrester and his project Nyentek have contributed a huge number of recordings to the experimental music space, including his most recent effort, Okay, So Let’s Say… (Jan. 2015). This 16-track album showcases the lengths to which Nyentek will go to produce a mind-bending, at times blissfully bizarre, collection of music that pushes the limits of sound and sensibility.

Okay, So Let’s Say… kicks off with “Shred,” which immediately transports the listener into a frenzied world of drum beats that back everything from reverberating notes and short, repeated melodies to clicks and clacks and beatbox-esque mouth effects. The track seems to build up to something but never comes down before abruptly fading out and into the next track, “Lazer Vizion.” “Lazer Vision” is the first song with lyrics, delivered in a rhythmic monotone that resembles lo-fi beat poetry.

Later on in the album, “Baby” is a particularly humorous track, especially when the song’s words and their delivery are combined in the way Nyentek has devised. The chorus, for example, is simply, “Baby, oh baby / You look so good / Baby, oh baby / Good enough to eat,” and verses include lines like, “Babies are little humans / Their heads are disproportionately large / And that is why they have to be born / Without the skills most animals have / Calling someone a baby is diminutive / And implies a kind of childishness or weakness / In short, it’s an insult / So it’s time to revolt.” The actual music is simpler and more reined in than most of his other tracks, as the lyrics take the driver’s seat, which makes it a stark contrast and standout song as compared to the rest of the album.

On the other hand, songs like “Dissidents” find a way to emphasize both zany keyboard lines and lyrics. This time around, the lyrics do take on their usual monotone quality some of the time, but at others, particularly in the first verse, Nyentek shows off his vocal prowess with an ear-splitting singsong and brief falsetto interludes. Surrounding the vocal riffs are bip-boops, amp-busting distorted noises and melody licks that fly up and down the musical scale.

Through this album and his other many recordings, Nyentek, who is a full-time music teacher, hopes to inspire other educators to view creative self-expression as valuable and viable, even when it doesn’t necessarily need a huge investment of money or time. While he does hope to bring joy to others with his music, Nyentek’s main focus is creating music for himself and testing the creative waters allowed by the experimental genre and the manpower behind today’s keyboard and computer-driven musical creations.

Album Review: Dronningen Electrify Their Sound on Carry on Dancing

Album Review: Dronningen Electrify Their Sound on Carry on Dancing | Music News | Scoop.it

A London-based electro-rock project dreamed up by Beatrice Bonnano, Dronningen, which means “The Queen” in Norwegian, base their music on three guiding principles and channel these principles into the Carry on Dancing EP, displaying dynamism and passion while being a source of pure entertainment as well.

Wifi PR Group's insight:
A London-based electro-rock project dreamed up by Beatrice Bonnano, Dronningen, which means “The Queen” in Norwegian, base their music on three guiding principles that can be heard and felt in the music and lyrics: 1) Getting rid of general negativity; 2) Dance as a purifying ritual; 3) Being the sovereign of your own world. In their three-track debut EP, Carry on Dancing, Dronningen channel these principles into an album that displays dynamism and passion while being a source of pure entertainment as well. Even though this group, which has several dedicated dancers along with musicians, is normally focused on live performances, their music itself shines on this recording.

The EP’s title track kicks off with a bright guitar-driven melody that crescendos into an amped up rock feel that screams Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The White Stripes with female vocals. The song drips with kinetic energy that listeners, whether they’re at the live show, listening on their headphones or rocking out in the car with the windows down, will enjoy nodding their head, dancing and thrashing around to. Bonnano’s vocals are magnetic, drawing the listener into a song layered with zany, rocking guitar riffs and traditional, driving rhythms in the percussion. Overall, the song is powerful and captures the quintessential rock sound of the late 90s and early 2000s.

In “Catskill Gravity,” Dronningen explores more of the electro-driven aspects of their dance-happy sound. Synths dominate the track’s melodies and the vocal’s backgrounds in the verses, but the rock guitar licks peek in as well. The mesmerizing vocals capture listeners with its anthemic chorus, wherein “gravity, “stupid” and “energy” bear repeating before dropping the last punchy line, “Your sound is boring,”—the theme of the song, whereas Dronningen’s sound clearly is not: “You’re wasting your time on Facebook /and my life / it is much more fun!”

Another electronic dance song with distorted rock riffs, “Heterodynamic” too explores the appealing way that rock and electro can combine to form irresistibly dancey songs thanks to the complex inner-workings of Dronningen’s musicians. Beatrice’s vocals continue to take on a Yeah Yeah Yeahs vibe throughout the album, including this track, wherein she sings about getting rid of an undesirable man, “I’m done with him / It feels a nightmare / I wear my scars / with pride and kindness / Inside this club / I’ll risk my chances.” It’s tracks like these that you can’t help but imagine a stage full of dancers rocking out to live.

While the EP only has three tracks, it only takes three songs to encapsulate the compelling sound Dronningen has created with dancing in mind, and the ultimate effect is that it leaves listeners clambering for more. If Dronningen’s hope was to inspire their album’s fans to experience the music live in concert, the band has knocked this one out of the park.

Artist Spotlight: For 2Four, All Music and Efforts Point to Creating a Cult Following

Artist Spotlight: For 2Four, All Music and Efforts Point to Creating a Cult Following | Music News | Scoop.it

Electro hop phenom 2Four dedicates his time and talents to amassing a loyal cult following, most recently including the release of his latest EP, Intergalactic, and the time he spends connecting with fans online.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

When it comes to Nashville electro hop artist 2Four, it’s not just about the music—it’s about the fans too. In De’Andre “2Four” Davis’ mind, what is music without the dedicated cult following to love and support it? Between writing and producing his music, which is sometimes compared to Lupe Fiasco, Drake and Travis McCoy, and other efforts to reach out to these fans, 2Four demonstrates his commitment to those who share and download his music.

The four-track EP Intergalactic (2014), featuring DJ Majestik, is 2Four’s latest music release, and it is a focused blend of the finer points of both hip-hop and electronica—or as NeuFutur Magazine describes it, “hard-nosed EDM and club-ready R&B.” Music blog Fresh Hype calls the recording “a fast-paced, fist-pumping EP [that] shows that two genres can mix seamlessly.” These are just two of the many indie music outlets who have picked up on the talent and potential 2Four brings to the table. They then share that excitement with their audiences to help 2Four attract the following he’s been looking for.

Besides sharing his music with the masses, 2Four fosters a cult vibe and sense of community among his listeners through avid social media interaction. He tweets to his followers multiple times a day, sharing photos, offerings from his company Juggernaut 24 Entertainment and updates on where his music can be heard playing live. Most recently, this has included audio appearances on Miami’s Coast 2 Coast Radio, which is powered by the largest DJ coalition in the world. Keeping his fans updated on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media networks has enabled him to connect with his targeted audience and develop relationships with them that signed artists can’t always do.

His music career successes stretch back before his more recent radio features. He created a song for nationally broadcasted talk show 3HL 104.5 Nashville. He performed at downtown Nashville’s world-famous B.B. King’s Blues Club. He also performed at Hard Rock Café in his hometown. But the road to indie fame started still long before these earlier accomplishments with a dedication to music and studio work since a young age. Ever since, his primary goal has been to create the music floating around his mind, inspired by the positive and negative everyday events in the world around him, and find the exact crowd of listeners and fans who love and appreciate his music.

From here, it’s up to the loyal following 2Four’s worked so hard for to spread the word about this hot new indie artist. It’s only a matter of time before his efforts have paid off.

Artist Spotlight: Trinity Ward Blazes the Trail for Scifitronica

Artist Spotlight: Trinity Ward Blazes the Trail for Scifitronica | Music News | Scoop.it

While sci-fi may not be the first thing people think to fuse with music, independent artist Trinity Ward has crafted a way to blend electronic music with a science fiction theme, one of his biggest loves next to creating music. He calls this fusion scifitronica.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

While sci-fi may not be the first thing people think to fuse with music, independent artist Trinity Ward has crafted a way to blend electronic music with a science fiction theme, one of his biggest loves next to creating music. He calls this fusion scifitronica. A solo artist on keyboards, including synths and samplers, and some backing vocals, he draws inspiration from a variety of genres, from dance and ambient to metal, particularly in his track “Reactor,” off his latest album. Fans have described his music as “a good mix of Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and New Order” and as having “elements of early Depeche Mode with a touch of Kraftwerk and the merest hint of Yellow in a backbeat.”

Having released four self-published albums over the years, Trinity Ward kicked off his discography with Enter the Infinite in 2010 followed by Echoes From Earth in 2011. Two years later, he released Soul Destroyer (2013). His latest album, Reactor (2014), is an exciting journey into a wide range of EDM with flourishes of other genres, such as the aforementioned metal influence on the album’s title track. He’s currently hard at work on a new album, which he plans to use to continue to expand his reach to fans across the world.

One interesting aspect of Trinity Ward’s career is that he is an entirely recording-based artist. Not performing live, he may seem to lose out on potential fans in his local scene in Wellington, New Zealand. But his focus on online promotion has still propelled him to global fame, including more than 122,000 likes on Facebook, an impressive number for an independent artist.

Trinity Ward has been featured by a few different media outlets, including Sine FM, based in Doncaster, UK, and DCR Dover Community Radio, based in Dover, UK, on terrestrial radio as well as Internet outlets, such as Earbits Radio, based in Venice, Calif., NBTMusicRadio, based in Berlin, and RelaxFreeRadio.org, based in New York. He’s also been featured in a couple of articles on Sound Sunday from MakeUseOf.com, including “Free Electronic Dance Music: Stream, Download & Party” and “Don’t Dance, Just Move: Electronic Dance & House Hits Remixed & Inspired.” Klick Push selected him through ReverbNation to make his music available for download as part of online promotions and Rendez-Vous Digital, though Chaos Music Distribution, for inclusion on compilations throughout Europe. Moshun TV from the United States has licensed his music for use in extreme sports videos.

Trinity Ward has earned notable recognition as of late for his recordings this year. NBTMusicRadio named his album Reactor the 18th best album of 2014 out of 150 albums. NBTMusicRadio also named his track “Evaporator” the 52nd best song of 2014, which was picked up for airplay by Skopemag. This recognition has been realized without the help of live performances but rather the expansive reach of the Internet and Trinity Ward’s sheer determination to be heard across the globe.

Trinity Ward’s track “Mayak,” off Reactor, was featured on WiFi PR Group’s Indie Anthems Vol. 9, a compilation of international independent artists spanning a wide range of genres who WiFi PR wants to put on the radars of music lovers and industry tastemakers the world over. Released at CMJ Music Marathon in New York City in October 2014, the digital mixtape was handed out on 3,500 download cards to festival attendees, and 1,500 more download copies are available on the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page. This compilation feature has helped Trinity Ward receive still more widespread exposure for his unique scifitronica sound.

With a new album on the way, Trinity Ward is set to continue to expand the reach of his music to new and loyal fans far beyond the borders of New Zealand. Putting scifitronica on the map is both his dream and destiny, and it will be exciting to see what he does next with his upcoming album.

HEO's Structure Straddles Ambient and Indie Rock

HEO's Structure Straddles Ambient and Indie Rock | Music News | Scoop.it

While trying to decide between listening to something ambient or something driven by a steady rock beat, listeners can instead find an enticing blend of the two in Korean band HEO.

Wifi PR Group's insight:
While trying to decide between listening to something ambient or something driven by a steady rock beat, listeners can instead find an enticing blend of the two in Korean band HEO. HEO combines the strength of indie rock with the melodic and rhythmic surprises of electronic music, all while maintaining a subtle but compelling darkness to their sound. Nowhere can this sound be heard better than in HEO’s latest album, Structure (2014).

The album opens with the instrumental track, “Sound of A,” a perfect example of the way HEO constructs tracks that are both ambient and zany at any given moment. After a little over a minute and a half of spacy sounds over a thumping beat, bizarre bubbling sound effects burst over the main melody and beat until shuddering into a quieter space. That brief quiet then leads right back into the bursting, dissonant sound effects that give the piece texture and definition, as it starkly contrasts the calm, smooth beat-driven beginning and end cap to this stellar first song.

The next track, “Luna,” starts out very keyboard-driven before a more indie rock-influenced guitar line rounds out the intro and the album’s first whispery lyrics drift above the main melodies. This delicate lyrical delivery carries through the album, but it receives proper introductory treatment in “Luna.” Because of its musicality and lyricism, this track has been recognized beyond the album itself. “Luna” is also featured on WiFi PR Group’s compilation, Indie Anthems Vol. 9, a collection of international independent artists that WiFi PR wants to put on the radars of music lovers and industry tastemakers the world over. Released at CMJ Music Marathon in October 2014, the digital mixtape included HEO and other electronic artists and is now available on the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page.

While electronic and dark ambient music often take front and center in HEO’s music, tracks like “Word of Silence” showcase the group’s ability to deliver a harder rock sound that can also dissolve into a lighter, soaring indie rock anthem by the song’s end. “Ride the Wave” is another heavier rock track that kicks off with distorted guitar licks and a kinetic bass line that harken back to the zany attitude HEO has displayed in some of its more electronic-driven songs. “Ride the Wave” also focuses on highly effected vocals that sound like they’ve been through a vocoder and back as they saturate the rock rhythms with an electronic sensibility.

In “Hard to Keep,” HEO takes a step back into softer alt-rock territory to deliver an emotive set of verses with more natural voices and steady rhythms in the keys. Hovering a little closer to the ground with this track, HEO shows a more serious side to their music while launching into a song that’s just over 11 minutes long.

For a dark-ambience-meets-indie-rock sound that transports listeners to a world of Korean musicians trying to get by with a unique breed of music in hand, HEO offers all that and more. Structure is their pinnacle effort thus far and has the potential to skyrocket them to festival bills like SXSW and international indie fame.

Album Review: Silva – Lucid Silvan Dub

Album Review: Silva – Lucid Silvan Dub | Music News | Scoop.it

Dub music, with its offbeat, laidback rhythms and up-tempo, pounding lyrics, has a cool, relaxed feel to it already. But Silva take that feeling one step further by infusing dub with a lucidity and psychedelic nature that elevates dub both musically and spiritually and takes listeners on a deep and soulful journey through space and time.

Wifi PR Group's insight:
Dub music, with its offbeat, laidback rhythms and up-tempo, pounding lyrics, has a cool, relaxed feel to it already. But Silva take that feeling one step further by infusing dub with a lucidity and psychedelic nature that elevates dub both musically and spiritually and takes listeners on a deep and soulful journey through space and time.

In their latest album, Lucid Silvan Dub (October 2014), dub purveyors Silva, who hail from Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Canada, draw inspiration from the picturesque rainforests and coastlines of their surroundings. Looking to a wide range of musical influences, from Easy Dub All-Stars and Damian Marley to Tool and Dezarie, they create music that combines the beachy vibes of dub with the ethereal sounds of psychedelic art and earthy tones of tribal folk. Lyrically, the trio tackles global, local and personal issues in an organic but exciting way, and all of these musical characteristics shine through on the group’s latest recording.

Lucid Silvan Dub opens up with “Soon Come,” which illustrates the delicate balance of dub and lucidity in the inherently Silvan way, as it starts off with an intro that blends an array of keyboard and guitar lines to create a sound that is mellow and relaxed. Electrifying, hard-hitting lyrics interject into this hazy musical foundation, which introduces the quintessential dub vibe before falling back into smooth, drawn out lyrics that hark to the lucid aspects of the music.

The next track, “Lapis,” starts out with a more solid base of dub in the intro as the psychedelic elements begin peeking into the song in fits and spurts. The lyrics are even and easygoing, and as they progress, both they and the overlaying melodies take on a more hallucinogenic, almost intoxicating, feel to them. The back and forth and careful melding of the two musical genres showcase Silva’s ability to approach music fusion in a smart way that maintains an equilibrium of two genres that may not at first seem compatible but, with this album as an example, are clearly meant for simultaneous experimentation.

The album’s closing track, “Move Out” is featured on WiFi PR Group’s Indie Anthems Vol. 9, a compilation of international independent artists who WiFi PR wants to put on the radars of music lovers and industry tastemakers the world over. Released at CMJ Music Marathon in October 2014, the digital mixtape was handed out on 3,500 download cards to festival attendees, and another 1,500 download copies are now available on the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page.

Masters of genre fusion Silva have proven the ability of dub and psychedelic music to come together to strike a harmonious balance with their latest album, Lucid Silvan Dub. As Silva are some of the pioneers in this type of fusion, it will be exciting to see where they take this new genre next as they continue to develop their unique sound.

A Smattering of Indie Talent for Music Lovers of All Tastes

A Smattering of Indie Talent for Music Lovers of All Tastes | Music News | Scoop.it

WiFi PR Group’s Indie Anthems Vol. 9 is a digital mixtape primed for indie music lovers of all stripes, and this week, WiFi PR features several different types of artists and subgenres.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

One of the best parts about a digital mixtape is the opportunity to hear a number of different artists and genres all in one compilation. On WiFi PR Group’s latest installment of its own mixtape series, Indie Anthems Vol. 9, listeners can enjoy more than a dozen up-and-coming independent artists, all of whom have something fresh to bring to the table. This week, WiFi PR features three different takes on the rock genre (Kevin Carling, RPS Surfers, Royal Red Brigade) as well as a hip new take on the traditional dub sound (Silva).

For those who enjoy the light classic rock vibe of Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel or more modern artists like MGMT, Kevin Carling has a new playlist addition in store with his featured track, “Ghost.” A solo artist and multi-instrumentalist from Brookfield, Ill., Carling plays guitar, piano, ukulele, harmonica and percussion, sings the vocals and makes drum and electronic beats on his computer. These lend to his multi-dimensional sound, impressively created by just one musician. His Indie Anthems track is off his latest album, Into This Miraculous World (2014), which was a follow-up to his debut, God of the Sky (2013).

Taking a turn toward surf rock with a funky organ aesthetic, Israeli quartet RPS Surfers take the organ, a nontraditional element of rock music, and place it center stage with the main melody of their featured track, “Gaza.” Their core sound still earns them comparisons to other classic surf bands as well as Mediterranean bands like Boom Pam. They use facets of their homeland to inspire their music, such as political issues like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and environmental concepts like commercial and residential building near the Shores of Israel.

For this week’s last taste of rock, WiFi PR moves toward dirtier punk rock with “20/20” from Regina, Saskatchewan’s Royal Red Brigade. These Canadian punk rockers bring the heat and the noise on this track with a powerful, distorted guitar line and hard vocals over punk’s classic kinetic percussion. This featured song is off the band’s latest release, Seasides (2014), which follows up two of their other promising recordings, Give Into the Violence (2012) and Out of the Trenches (2010).

Off their latest EP, Lucid Silvan Dub (2014), Silva’s featured track “Move Out” demonstrates their experimental, futuristic take on the dub sound. Besides a wistful vocal intro, the track is fronted by lyrics in the classic dub delivery style and backed by the traditional basic beat. But layered on top of that are funky keyboard lines and psychedelic synthesized surprises that elevate their sound to a new level. Both this music and their lyrics profess their devotion to New Age interests and the fundamentals of freedom, love and peace. For some context, Silva have a sound that rings of Salmonella Dub, Pink Floyd and Nahko Bear.

Another 1,500 digital downloads of Indie Anthems Vol. 9 can now be downloaded from the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page. The previous eight Indie Anthems installments are also available for streaming and downloads, while supplies last.

Indie Anthems Singer-songwriters Enrapture Listeners’ Hearts

Indie Anthems Singer-songwriters Enrapture Listeners’ Hearts | Music News | Scoop.it

On Indie Anthems Vol. 9, singer-songwriters prevail as they share some of the more moving and emotional music on the album, all of which both seize and relax the engaged listener.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

Singer-songwriters are a genre of artists that never really leave music lovers’ favorites lists, as they incite powerful emotions with music that is light on the ears but strong on the heart strings. Featured on Indie Anthems Vol. 9, three singer-songwriter groups, Kai Killion, Marty O’Reilly and Ursina, join other indie artists on this 16-track digital mixtape, the latest installment of the indie musician series from WiFi PR Group. The Indie Anthems mixtapes, released at major festivals and music events throughout the year, introduce these artists to both music fans and industry tastemakers who sense the defining roles in the future of the music world.

Israeli surf rock purveyors Kai Killion were destined to share their music with the world after reuniting 10 years following their initial formation 13 years ago. Together, they’ve crafted a soft, melodic sound with the poppy instrumentation of the surf genre and vocals that range from slow and emotive to high-energy and upbeat. Their track “Drip” showcases this sound on Indie Anthems Vol. 9 and is a perfect introduction to their modernized breed of surf rock.

Another singer-songwriter group is an all strings trio named for vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Marty O’Reilly out of Santa Cruz, CA. Their track “Cold Canary Gaslight” drips with carefully spun, soulful melodies and harmonies courtesy of a guest female vocalist. The violin playing is an especially smart move for the band, as it lends a touch of old-school folk to their poignant, accessible track.

The most upbeat singer-songwriter track on Indie Anthems Vol. 9, “Fit In,” comes from Swiss folk pop artists, Ursina. Often compared to Feist, Sophie Hunger and Boy, Ursina employ light instrumentation with fluttering vocals in the verses, leading into a powerful soprano voiceover that carries the listener through the captivating chorus.

Another 1,500 digital downloads of Indie Anthems Vol. 9 can now be downloaded from the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page. The previous eight Indie Anthems installments are also available for streaming and downloads, while supplies last.

Electrostatic Rhythm Pigs Defibrillate the Indie Garage Rock Genre

Electrostatic Rhythm Pigs Defibrillate the Indie Garage Rock Genre | Music News | Scoop.it

Garage rock duo Electrostatic Rhythm Pigs aim to revive their beloved genre with the release of their single, “Countdown,” which was featured on WiFi PR Group’s compilation, Indie Anthems Vol. 7.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

Two decades later, garage rock is taking a stand once again. Taking cues from such luminaries as The Gun Club and The Bottle Rockets, garage rock duo Electrostatic Rhythm Pigs have crafted a familiar yet unique sound in their hometown of Allentown, Penn. It resembles both of their musical influences as well as The White Stripes and The Gun Club and adds a distinct flair of their own. This sound can be heard on both their debut EP, Celebrity Prostitution (2012), and their latest single, “Countdown,” which appeared on WiFi PR Group’s indie compilation mixtape, Indie Anthems Vol. 7.

Vocalist Erin Fowler and guitarist/bassist Don Melber both became involved with music at a young age. Erin’s grandfather sang while her grandmother played the organ, and she spent her childhood learning old classics and singing constantly, often with them. When she moved from East Texas to the East Coast, she experienced extreme culture shock and felt it important to keep in touch with some part of her past musically. Don began playing guitar at the age of 10, and from then on, the need to play music has been a driving force in his life.

During their 15-year collaboration, Electrostatic Rhythm Pigs released their debut album, Celebrity Prostitution, which first put them on the map both locally and nationally. They also founded ChurchHouse Productions, which has evolved from a small 8-track studio to a fully professional digital studio. With this effort, the duo are able to not only create and promote their own music, but they also push themselves to meet more musicians to bring onboard and continue having an effect on the local music scene.

With their music and other music-related endeavors, Electrostatic Rhythm Pigs aim to promote a more diversified local music scene in Allentown—particularly one that doesn’t primarily focus on blues or cover bands. Garage rock was an infallible force in the 90s and broke through the mold to introduce a new generation of rock music, and the duo intend to have the same impact in their own music community.

Electrostatic Rhythm Pigs most recently had their single “Countdown” featured on WiFi PR Group’s indie compilation mixtape, Indie Anthems Vol. 7. It’s a collection of international independent artists who WiFi PR wants to put on the radars of music lovers and industry tastemakers the world over. Released at Pitchfork Music Festival in July 2014 and again at Lollapalooza in August 2014, the 10-track digital mixtape was handed out on 3,500 download cards to festival attendees. WiFi PR has also made 1,500 more download copies available on the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page.

Electrostatic Rhythm Pigs’ debut EP, Celebrity Prostitution, is available in digital form on iTunes, Amazon and CD Baby, which also distributed the record to several online music outlets. Fans can also find physical copies of the EP on the band’s website, and the EP can be streamed on Spotify, Rhapsody and other music streaming outlets. Listen to the EP on YouTube and their cover of Joy Division’s “Isolation” on Vimeo.

Cult Singer-songwriter Chris Whitmer Lands Coveted Indie Compilation Track

Cult Singer-songwriter Chris Whitmer Lands Coveted Indie Compilation Track | Music News | Scoop.it

Riding the successes of his performances at Infringement Festival, singer-songwriter Chris Whitmer released his captivating track, “Mighty Thin Line,” which was featured on WiFi PR Group’s compilation, Indie Anthems Vol. 7.

Wifi PR Group's insight:

Described as having the “raw, poetic honesty found only in church-house confessionals or drunken back alleyways,” singer-songwriter and guitarist Chris Whitmer’s music is an authentic breed of Americana and outlaw folk. Hailing from Middleburg, Penn., Chris most recently had this unbridled sound, encapsulated by his song “Mighty Thin Line,” featured on WiFi PR Group’s indie mixtape, Indie Anthems Vol. 7. He also recently performed at Infringement Festival in Buffalo, N.Y.

While Chris primarily focuses on vocals and guitar, both acoustic and electric, he has also been known to bust out the banjo, keyboards, ukulele, mandolin and tambourine. He draws from a wide range of musical influences, from Neil Young, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones to artists he feels are “below the surface” and “put as much effort into their words as they do their music,” such as Marah, Wilco and Uncle Tupelo.

Lyrically, he’s inspired by a variety of events and concepts, including anything from a picture on the wall or discarded Christmas tree to a tattoo, wild dreams or simply an overactive imagination. Also, during a few months in the low point of his life, he spent that time reading the classics, studying music, journaling and rewriting all of his songs, of which he now has a couple hundred. He namely writes in a broad metaphorical sense to entice his listeners to think deeply about his music and lyrics.

As a result, Chris is most often compared to Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Paul Westerberg and Flint Zeigler, to name a few. Having touched audiences countrywide, Chris has been called “quite a cult figure among singer-songwriters” by Dave Blackledge of Pennsylvania Musician for his carefully and intelligently crafted songs.

One of Chris’ latest major accomplishments was his six performances over four days at Buffalo, N.Y.’s 10-day art, film and music festival, Infringement Festival, which was held July 24 to Aug. 3. These shows were mostly solo, but a couple were with his good friend and fellow musician, Eli The Hawk. Venues included Babeville, which is Ani DiFranco’s church, Essex St. Pub and Allen St. Hardware.

Chris Whitmer most recently had his single “Mighty Thin Line” featured on WiFi PR Group’s indie compilation, Indie Anthems Vol.

Though he has yet to release any official recordings, Chris Whitmer currently offers a list of songs that are exclusively available on his ReverbNation page. For every song purchased through ReverbNation, Chris donates half of the proceeds to Charity: Water, which is committed to providing clean, drinkable water to those in need, a cause that he wholeheartedly supports. He also occasionally hands out demos at his live performances.

Chris doesn’t have any upcoming live performances currently on the books, but he has performed throughout Central Penn., as far east as Cape May, N.J., and as far west as Portland, Or.
