SoundCloud hooks up with Foursquare to allow sound checkins » TNW Video | music innovation | Scoop.it
European startup Soundcloud is killing it right now, with over 3million users the voice and music sharing app is becoming the YouTube for all things sound. In their new app they’ve partnered with Foursquare to allow you to check in your sounds to places and share it on Foursquare as demonstrated in the video above. I caught up with founder Alexander Ljung to talk who he’s grown the startup from concept to growing company in a few years.

Amazon Cloud Player: First Impressions

Amazon Cloud Player: First Impressions | music innovation | Scoop.it
* Uploading: When you first install Cloud Drive on your computer, it searches your entire hard drive for your music and your playlists. While this takes a while (10 minutes), once the process is complete, it makes uploading songs a snap. It pulled my iTunes playlists and let me choose which ones I wanted to upload, a very welcomed feature.

* Usability: The web-based cloud player is really intuitive. The layout makes it easy to select songs, search your music archives and organize your music. The player itself is quick to load, responsive, and even lets you skip around to different points in your music, something not possible with most of the streaming music players on the market today.

Death To The Shiny Disc: Time To Go All-Digital

Death To The Shiny Disc: Time To Go All-Digital | music innovation | Scoop.it
Back at Warners I was in a meeting about “reintroducing” a band to the market, which basically means the last record was a stiff so we needed to “reboot” them. Not dissimilar to what Hollywood does to franchises.

A lot of ideas were floated around: vinyl singles, etc. My statement was “death to the shiny disc!” Basically, eliminate all physical, and go completely digital. Nothing was to be gained by putting out low margin product. This was four years ago. As you can imagine, that statement was met with some glares. I was pulled aside later and advised that the shiny disk still paid for my shiny servers. I didn’t use that catch phrase again.

Nirvana, Rush and the Rolling Stones get iPad apps for classic albums | Technology | guardian.co.uk | music innovation | Scoop.it
Nevermind may be 20 years old, but Nirvana's classic grunge album is moving with the times. It has spawned a new iPad app from Universal Music Group, offering bonus video content and social networking features. Albums by Rush and the Rolling Stones are getting the same treatment.

In its App Store listing, Nirvana: Classic Album Nevermind is described as "interactive, socially aware, and internet connected". What that equates to is a meaty 387.6MB download with videos preloaded rather than streamed on demand – hence the file size...

Music Industry Heavyweights Go Deep with ROBA iPad Apps | Evolver.fm | music innovation | Scoop.it
Who says old dogs can’t learn new tricks? Three music veterans have teamed up to release music apps for Apple and Android tablets under the name ROBA Interactive, including high-end audio and video, interviews, text, photos, musical scores, and more. The result, they hope, will provide a deeper music experience than one gets from more hastily-assembled apps, replacing some of what they say went missing when music went digital.

What Makes a Truly New Instrument? Human Gestures Power Winners of Guthman Competition

What Makes a Truly New Instrument? Human Gestures Power Winners of Guthman Competition | music innovation | Scoop.it
Nearly as long as we’ve had electronics, musical inventors have tried to imagine new electronic instruments. In the crowded world of new instrument design, the Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition has emerged as a key prize for the best work, with creations battling fiercely for attention.
But in the oddball world of sound and music, how do you judge a winner? As a starting point, organizers this year asked the judges what they personally found important. With an expert panel including synth pioneer Tom Oberheim and reacTable creator Sergi Jorda, those answers are themselves revealing.

As Twitter Turns 5, Five Ways It's Changed Music - hypebot

As Twitter Turns 5, Five Ways It's Changed Music - hypebot | music innovation | Scoop.it
image from 2.bp.blogspot.com On Sunday, Twitter co-counder Jack Doresy tweeted, "5 yrs ago today, the eve of launching twttr to the company. Moving from @Biz, @florian & me, to all of our peers using it. Nervous. #twttr". It took 38 months for Twitter to hit 1 billion tweets. Now the site averages 140 million tweets every day. But how has Twitter changed music and the artist - fan realtionship?

1. Artists can communicate with fans instantly from anywhere.

2. Their messaging is now often personal rather than informational.

3. Each message has a greater chance for viral spread.

4. Casual fans can maintain a casual link to more artists.

5. At the same time, uber-fans feel closer to their favorite musicians.
