The business model of Spotify

The business model of Spotify | music innovation | Scoop.it

No industry is changing as rapid as the music industry. In the past, the record companies fully determined which artists were launched national or international. The production costs, the promotional costs and the distribution costs for an album were significant. The music industry lived for the blockbusters with huge sales from a handful of talents. The core business of a record company was to discover and to launch new talent. In the last ten years, this has all changed. The record companies could not keep up with the rapid developments in the market and lost considerable ground to newcomers.

I No Longer Want To Own Music. I Want To Be A Renter! | music innovation | Scoop.it
Owning stuff is important to me. Or at least I thought it was. Now, I'm not so sure. I'm starting to think that it's better to subscribe instead of own, because by subscribing, I get a lot more choice and can easily stay a lot more current. But I'm getting ahead of myself...

Simon Decreuze's comment, June 15, 2011 4:44 PM

Amazon Cloud Player: First Impressions

Amazon Cloud Player: First Impressions | music innovation | Scoop.it
* Uploading: When you first install Cloud Drive on your computer, it searches your entire hard drive for your music and your playlists. While this takes a while (10 minutes), once the process is complete, it makes uploading songs a snap. It pulled my iTunes playlists and let me choose which ones I wanted to upload, a very welcomed feature.

* Usability: The web-based cloud player is really intuitive. The layout makes it easy to select songs, search your music archives and organize your music. The player itself is quick to load, responsive, and even lets you skip around to different points in your music, something not possible with most of the streaming music players on the market today.

Turntable.fm Signs Deal with ASCAP

Turntable.fm Signs Deal with ASCAP | music innovation | Scoop.it
Turntable.fm, the increasingly hot social media site that allows users to DJ songs for listeners in virtual rooms, has signed a licensing deal with ASCAP that will ensure that songwriters, composers and publishers will be fairly paid for the use of their music. The blanket license cements the legitimacy of the site, which had previously operated in a legally dubious gray area protected at least in theory by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

It’s been a busy time for cloud storage and music services and Apple’s launch onto the scene with Apple iCloud has officially declared it global war. The lines have begun to blur as to what you own, where you own it and just how much you have to pay for the privilege to do so and one could be forgiven for doing a little head scratching on the matter.
