MFLL GIG CHOICE `•.¸ *★ ♫ ¸。 ☆。¸ ¸*•. * `•. * ´.•´ From Finland to Hackney `•.¸ *★ ♫ ¸。 ☆。¸ ¸*•. * FRIGG

From Finland to Hackney: Frigg @ St. Mark's on Saturday 22 November.

Let the reviews speak for this Finnish super troop of fantastic fiddlers, about to take East London by storm. Listening to Frigg, they have the ability to spirit you away to an original, addictive, musical landscape and as you become absorbed entranced even, it is impossible to sit still, The London gig promises to be a very special night, not to be missed by Londoners who love the sound of dynamic Nordgrass (Nordic Folk meets American Bluegrass)

“This is Blazin’ Fiddles on steroids! Powerful stuff, sometimes an out and out rock band, sometimes subtle, mellow and melodic, sometimes old timey/bluegrassy, sometimes with a wild gypsy feel but always top notch musicianship” –
The Living Tradition

“The mighty Frigg - exquisite!” – Fiona Talkington, BBC Radio 3

“Alternately rousing and reflective - music to rope reindeer by!" –
World Music Charts Europe

“Their latest album is invigorating and exciting – listening is enough to entice you to travel some distance to see them perform live” – FATEA

“Their music is unwavering and accomplished – working instruments hard has never looked so easy” – Fiddle On Magazine

“Their superbly matched four fiddle frontline, buoyant string rhythm section and dynamic arrangements, complete with humorously choreographed movements, proved irresistible” Glasgow Herald

“They make one fantastic sound - I can’t help but throw up my arms in admiration” – Frank Hennessy, BBC Radio Wales

“The tunes are a non-stop whirlwind”- Phil Brown, The Drift, BBC Radio Lancashire

Catch them in full flight at their debut London gig on Sat 22 Nov @ St Mark’s Church Hall, Hackney E8 2NL where they will be performing their latest lively CD Polka V.

"There aren't many bands who can better a perfect album, but Frigg has done it with Polka V. Their playing is as exquisite as always and there’s a greater depth of invention, fun and beauty than ever. Frigg has done it again!" - Fiona Talkington,
BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction

This Frigg gig promises its audience "a hair-raising, voice-losing, heart-burstingly beautiful gig full of traditional Finnish tunes with Norwegian detours”

Sunday Choice ~ Jamaican Queens ~ Caitlin

Sunday Choice ~ Jamaican Queens ~ Caitlin | Music for a London Life | Scoop.it

Young Blood From The Motor City Premiere a Kaleidoscopic Video

"Detroit’s dystopian environs are transformed by a psychedelic explosion of color in Jamaican Queens’ new video for “Caitlin.” Local filmmaker Daniel DeMaggio spent the better part of a month adding the swirling, surreal animated visuals to footage shot in one of the city’s many empty spaces. “We created a green screen in a vacant warehouse,” says the group’s vocalist and co-producer Ryan Spencer. “Dan doesn’t have heat at his place, so he stays over at my place when it gets really cold. He’s my favorite artist in the city and when he expressed interest in doing something with us, we jumped on the opportunity.” Spencer wrote “Caitlin” as a ‘secret Santa’ present to comfort his eponymous friend—who also stars in today’s video—after her grandmother was tragically killed. “I think she really liked the gift,” he says. The trio, completed by drummer Ryan Clancy and guitarist, bassist, co-producer and back-up singer Adam Pressley, recently released their debut album Wormfood, which fuses playful indie and “Detroit trap pop,” a synthetic-voiced hybrid of hip-hop, dubstep and other sonic elements currently energizing the city’s fertile underground."

Friday Song: Chris Yendell - Humble Man

Chris Yendell - Humble Man - Recorded live at Paper Dress Vintage, Shoreditch, London. http://www.chrisyendell.com

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Chris Yendell has a gig tomorrow night @ Heath Street church in Hampstead. It's evident from the video  of Chris performing live @ Paper Dress Vintage that he is well worth listening to , especially in a space that  allows acoustic performers to shine. The Paper Dress Vintage music nights are no more, sadly, but there are still good places to listen, in an appealing atmosphere and Heath St church is one such place that deserves our support. Go, if you can.

Monday Gig ! Calling all folksters! October Highlight Ange Hardy @ Green Note | Music for a London Life | Scoop.it

Ange Hardy @ Green Note

MON 6TH OCT, 2014

Doors open 7:00pm, Live Music Starts 8:30pm

Green Note is an independent live music venue and vegetarian café-bar, located in Camden Town, London

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Much has already been written in praise of folk singer songwriter Ange Hardy's new album. Here is a review that resonated with me, after I had listened to the new album:

http://radiowarwickshire.com/cd-review-the-lament-of-the-black-sheep/?utm_content=bufferb2564&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

All very true, all truly deserved by this sinewed musician, whose integrity and folk credentials are as one. For me, the stand out qualities evident throughout these carefully crafted songs are honesty, connectedness and the female voice. The female sensibility.

She's in London tomorrow night @ Green Note.
Recommended? Big yes.

Tuesday Music Choice: Natalie Duncan - Devil In Me

Find Natalie on Facebook here: http://on.fb.me/vfQXYlhttp://soundcloud.com/natalieduncanhttp://www.natalieduncan.com/...

October, two years ago

Natalie did a brilliant set @ Station Sessions/ King's Cross last Thursday. It must have been difficult for her to perform with such intensity, with the audience standing only a few feet awa, in a  busy train station by daylight, rather than a dedicated, atmospheric music venue ...but hey! We really appreciated your stunning performance! The travellers from Paris looked gobsmacked..what a great advert for London for those just arriving @ St Pancras International!  Cool. Very cool.

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

This recording of Natalie still sounds phenomenal, two years on!

She's currently on tour and also available for  private functions.

November 2012', MFLL saw her live at Jazz Voice/ The Barbican , alongside Imelda May and some other rousing , unlikely performers of Jazz, including the wonderful Boy George!  Must catch her love again soon.

To hear Natalie perform in an intimate setting would be so good.

Saturday Song ~ Adele ~ Hometown Glory live at Royal Albert Hall

Adele loves the city " when everyone is wearing shorts and shades,"

"The song appears on Adele's debut album 19, released on 22 October 2007 in the United Kingdom. In 2008, the song was re-released as her fourth single. Adele wrote the song in 10 minutes after her mother tried to persuade her to leave her 'home town ' ofWest Norwood in London for university. "Hometown Glory" is the first song that Adele ever wrote."

MFLL : Art of Jazz

MFLL : Art of Jazz | Music for a London Life | Scoop.it

"Last Thursday (25/09/2014) at the Twickenham Jazz Club was more about the double act of tenor saxophonists Alex Garnett and Brandon Allen than anything else. Yes, they were capably supported, but this was a case of the duo employing the Zulu 'Horns of the Buffalo' offense to break our post-summer malaise to smithereens"

Alban Low

Art Of Jazz

read the rest of this gig review here  http://artofjazz.blogspot.co.uk/

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

I absolutely love Alban Low's sketches, especially those of jazz musicians at live gigs in and around London. His most recent jazz review is of an evening spent at his local jazz club in Twickenham. A recommended read. Do linger over his sketches. In a few swift pen manoeuvres, he manages to capture the essence of these performers. The musical instrument of choice is like an additional  and essential  body part. Individual characteristics are there within these sketches; passion and personality "seep through the ink" . And it all happens within a few brief moments in time.
