MFLL Single Of The Week: Show of Hands - 'The Game Keeper' (Centenary)

From the album, Centenary, The Gamekeeper has been launched as a single to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Show of Hands perform their new single "The Game Keeper" at Exeter Cathedral on July I, to coincide with the centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. They will be joined by Imelda Staunton and Jim Carter. This will be an evening to remember in a magnificent setting very close to Steve Knightley's heart.

First time I have heard this track from the SoH Centenary Album and I found it incredibly moving. One of their best.from a long list of bests. It's been described as "very poignant". It is certainly that, and more. It has a profundity that belies its simplicity. A tragedy on an epic scale viewed through one man's personal story.  Comparisons made between his work as a gamekeeper aiding his experience on the battlefield make this a compelling lyric, especially when delivered with such warmth and understanding. I felt saddened and humbled as I listened but this man was one of the few survivors and so in the midst of carnage, there is resilience. There is hope. Life goes on. An uplifting thought.

Peter Knight's Gigspanner - Layers Of Ages - Interview

Gigspanner talk us through their upcoming studio album - Layers Of Ages - and music video. Gigspanner's new studio album 'Layers of Ages' released on the 11th May. Pre-order now via their website http://www.gigspanner.com/

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Always insightful to hear musicians at the top of their game talk about the inspiration behind their latest album.

MFLL has had a listen. Favourite track so far?  Difficult one. Here's three. She Moved Through The Fair ( sung at my wedding so I guess I have always loved it and this arrangement is special) Bows of London (Justice is delivered  by the banks of the Thames via a rather unusual violin) and the intriguing Death And The Lady . This is traditional music at its most intelligent, instinctively innovative, masterfully crafted.

MFLL Music For The Weekend: Luke Jackson – This Family Tree

MFLL Music For The Weekend: Luke Jackson – This Family Tree | Music for a London Life | Scoop.it
Luke Jackson's latest album 'This Family Tree' is short but perfectly formed, sharply and sympathetically observed and emotionally involving. Further evidence that Jackson is shaping up to become one of the enduring major figures in the world of contemporary folk.
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

We have been watching Luke's trajectory for some time. He has such an enquiring approach to musical possibility. Always open-ended and with forceful lyrics.

Roisin O Recommends: The Coronas - Blind Will Lead The Blind

"In the lead up to the release of The Coronas 3rd album 'Closer To You' Knoxy talks about one of his favorite tracks form the album called 'Blind Will Lead The Blind."

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

"I've loved The Coronas since their brilliant debut album 'Heroes or Ghost.' I considered listing "Heroes or Ghost" as my favorite song of theirs as I really think it is one of the best songs ever written, but instead I thought I'd list a lesser known one as I would love everyone to listen to both!

"The Blind Will Lead The Blind" is from their third album and it's a song that just catches me. It's not particularly poppy or upbeat, but has this rolling drum beat and beautiful bassline that catches your attention with a lyric that you really have to listen to over and over to decipher which alludes to a longing for something in the future."

The sister of Danny O’Reilly, the front man of The Coronas, and the daughter of Mary Black, Irish singer and songwriter Roisin O has grown up deeply immersed in Irish music. She knows her stuff and what she likes.

Thea Gilmore - Ghosts and Graffiti

Thea Gilmore - Ghosts and Graffiti | Music for a London Life | Scoop.it

" In her notes on the album, she writes that listening back to the old songs was like being haunted by the ghosts of her past. Rather than exorcise them, she’s given them new life while continuing to graffiti the wall of the music industry with music that matters, music with a heart and a mind rather than a corporate game plan. Long may she be 'the girl that went and bucked their little trend.' "

It's April! The April Maze - I've Seen The Rain

"I've Seen The Rain will feature on The April Maze Album 'Sleeping Storm' out Feb 2015. Single out now at www.theaprilmaze.com and iTunes. "

'Mayhew’s masterful guitar, Agam’s visceral, growling cello and her own dark twisted vocal…mean much of this is a series of inky-black fairy tales.'

Mojo Magazine (4 Star review)

“Indie alt-folk, much influenced by the sound (and fashions) of 70s San Francisco, Agam’s voice a rich cocktail of dark molasses and sweet honey.” Folking.com

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Another exciting new discovery for MFLL .

We love this Gower Coast video from Oxford/Melbourne based alt folk duo The April Maze and will definitely be checking out one of their live shows once they go on tour In 2015. They are also available for house concerts. Oh what a night that would be!
