Steve Knightley sings 'Ghosts' on his Grow Your Own Gig Tour

A taster of the first warm up gig for Steve's Grow your own Gig tour. Filmed at The Ley Arms Kenn on 9th January 2014.
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Steve Knightley
Cecil Sharp House

Feb 6 2014

Patricia Cassidy writes:

The stalwarts who turned out for Steve Knightley, despite appalling weather conditions and a tube strike, were not disappointed. They were treated to an engaging performance full of warmth and humour, with a distinct suggestion of gravel in the voice at times.
His set list included, not only traditional folk songs about lovable and unlovable rogues challenging authority or trying with varying degrees of success to lead innocent maidens astray, but also his own and others’ songs about life in the countryside today. So he sang about incomers hoping to buy into the rural idyll and their inevitable disappointment and the ongoing battle between those on the margins and the landed gentry. No marks for guessing whose side he was on! Knightley's appreciation of the tradition he is a part of, shone through his singing and his story telling. He created a very cosy atmosphere against his simple backdrop of a kitchen drawn in chalk. His willingness to share and explain his music and his experience of country life on which it is based was entertaining, unpretentious and seductive.

Good show Steve!

At CSH, the pared down rendition of Country Life, with piano accompaniment was the perfect end note. Always leave your ever-growing fan base wanting more.

Steve is going solo this year but is fondly and famously known as part of  the duo Show Of Hands, reviewed here several times, most recently last year around this time when they appeared at the RFH

Gig of the week: ~Luke Jackson ~ Album Launch ~Fumes And Faith

The first official music video of 'Fumes and Faith', the title track of Luke Jackson's second album. Filmed and edited by Light Tone Studios.

“A huge talent is emerging” - Acoustic Magazine

“A commanding presence  - a class album. It’s hard to believe he’s only 19 - a really strong performer and songwriter and a fine guitar player. Fumes and Faith is already causing quite a stir.”-  Mike Harding

“Very powerful - impressive songs, individual playing and the singing – oh man the singing!” - Folkcast

“CD received 40 minutes ago and straight into the player... Wow! What a complete package this young man is... His perceptions of and insight into issues are astounding as is his empathy. I might expect an album like this from a Richard Thompson but not when they were 19” - Len Holton,

From Albion & Beyond, KUAR Radio, Arkansas

“A new emerging talent” - Bob Harris

“A maturity beyond his years reminiscent of a young Tim Buckley with a touch of Nizlopi thrown in for good measure”- Northern Sky

“He plays  with a maturity of artists two and three times his age and there is something in his songs that speaks of an old soul and belies his youth”- FATEA Magazine

“A huge talent” - Hardeep Singh Kohli, BBC Radio 2

“Surely one of the stars of the not too distant future” - Living Tradition

“Luke Jackson shows the folk tradition is in safe hands” - Songlines

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

I've seen Luke perform live and I love his passion and his adherence to his roots in his songwriting. Born to be onstage, he merged  the steely spirit and stage presence of an emerging young rock star, with the responsive mind of a knowing folk musician. Not bad going for a then-18 year old. He's joined at the hip to his beloved guitar and he's just brimful of energy; a young man on a mission. Seek  him out on tour. He's @ Cecil Sharp House for the launch of his new album, Fumes And Faith.

Promises to be a great night. Deserves to be a sell-out.

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Here's what the critics have to say :

“Joseph has found a piece of himself that synchs with the songs and offers it to his listeners as a new route across the same map. Forty years into Springsteen’s career no other artist I can think of has tried any such thing” - Springsteen biographer and U.S. music critic Dave Marsh

“It’s brave - but it’s brilliant”! - Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2

“A new Martyn Joseph album of Springsteen covers must be the toughest gig going but here’s the thing - it really works. Yes sir!” -Simon Mayo, BBC Radio 2

“Martyn Joseph delivers a stunning folk-based tribute. It never sounds like you are listening to a Springsteen impersonator” –Backstreets.com

“There’s no attempt at reinterpretation here - just straightforward dirt under the fingernails integrity - a fine tribute, tremendously powerful -– an acoustic greatest hits The Boss himself would be proud to present” – Acoustic Magazine

“Tires Rushing by in the Rain is the folk album the Boss never made. It’s a brave man who takes on such iconic compositions as Thunder Road and Badlands but Joseph’s courage is rewarded precisely because he remakes them in his own image” - R2 Magazine

“The critically acclaimed singer throws fresh interpretations on The Boss’s vintage observations in a spare, pensive package. Fans of both Joseph and Springsteen should be delighted with this set” - Maverick Magazine

“Springsteen-indebted Americana, suspended folk chords glistening beneath troubadour tales, his lyrical eloquence still inspired almost 30 years on from his debut” - MOJO

wednesday

1pm

Recorded this summer in a studio set-up in a Cornish church, 'Word Of Mouth' is a defining album for Seth Lakeman's storied career and for the landscape of British folk. It keeps the stripped-back storytelling but embellishes it with a denser, fuller version of Seth's hauntingly melodic style. Seth has bared his traditional folk roots more than ever before with 'Word Of Mouth'. The sound is deeper and more dramatic than previous albums, in part owing to Seth's recruitment of his live band: As well as Ben Nicholls, Cormac Byrne, Lisbee Stainton and Sean Lakeman, guests on the album include Leon Hunt playing banjo on 'Last Rider', cellist India Bourne on 'The Wanderer' and 'Lau' accordion player Martin Green on 'Tiger'.

Recorded in North Tamerton Church in East Cornwall and featuring the stories of the real people who inspired the album, 'Word of Mouth' straddles the folk tradition Seth's music is steeped in and the contemporary folk movement that he has become such a seminal figure of. Seth Lakeman has been at the forefront of the re-emergence of British folk, its escape from the dark shadow of bearded men in Fair Isle jumpers into a new light for energetic, heartfelt musicians and a rediscovered respect for acoustic music. 'Word Of Mouth' shows Seth continuing to lead the way.

Isabel Anderson @ Twickfolk

Isabel Anderson @ Twickfolk | Music for a London Life | Scoop.it

"Isobel’s music weaves a lyrical landscape, teetering on the darker side of life with the gentle lilt of British Folk influences, soft crooner lullabies and soulful climaxes.

In 2010 Isobel released her intimate debut album Cold Water Songs, receiving high praise and airplay from BBC Radio 3′s Late Junction and BBC Radio Ulster.

This was followed by her 2011 album Dark Path, which was featured on Radio 2 by Jamie Cullum and in The Guardian’s Music podcast. Her third album will be released later this year.

Of Isobel’s 2011 album, Jamie Cullum said on his Radio 2 programme: “As I go through the pile of CDs I receive every week sometimes you come across something really special. I love this record… Real effortless simplicity. Dark Path is a great album”.

"Steve Knightley - The Grow Your Own Gig Tour 2014" at Stanley Halls

"Steve Knightley - The Grow Your Own Gig Tour 2014" at Stanley Halls | Music for a London Life | Scoop.it

Tickets are now available for “Steve Knightley - The Grow Your Own Gig Tour 2014” at Stanley Halls, London on Wed 5 Feb 2014 at 8:00PM

Show of Hands’ acclaimed frontman Steve Knightley is a man on a mission – to play as many village halls and “untapped” grass roots community venues in England as he can muster.

One of the British folk roots scene’s biggest names, the multi BBC award-winning singer songwriter has for 21 years played key venues all over the UK with his Show of Hands’ bandmate Phil Beer, topped with no less than four spectacular Royal Albert Hall sell outs.

But in 2014 he will “downsize” - taking a break from city theatres and major concert venues to play some 70 solo off-the-beaten-track gigs in venues the length and breadth of England, from Cornwall to the Borders. With no Show of Hands tours until next autumn, the brainchild that is the Grow Your Own Gig tour will see him performing at a bedrock of intimate rural venues between January-September, with some organisers staging gigs in their community for the very first time.

The South Norwood date is at the Stanley Halls, a complex of unique Edwardian buildings, just off the High Street and a short walk from Norwood Junction.

www.growyourowngig.co.uk

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

I will do my utmost to get to this gig, as I have been a big fan of Show Of Hands for some time. The charismatic Steve Knightley performing solo in intimate community venues largely unused to such happenings, will be an experience not to be missed.

From Albert Hall to community hall, by choice. It's an incredible opportunity for anyone within travelling distance of South Norwood , to experience something very special.

----------------------------------------------------

if you can't make the above, or you'd like to see Steve two nights in a row, he's to be found creating a village hall atmosphere in Cecil Sharp House on Feb 6
