Afternoon Song: Richard Thompson - Persuasion -

Brilliant duet between RT & his son Teddy. Video quality isn't great but the performance sure is!
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

March 2013: I saw Richard Thompson @ Ronnie Scotts ..oh .. too many decades ago. He was on stage with his then-wife Linda and it was a night not to forget. I believe his current tour has the man in great form. This track is dedicated to Jane Brace, for reminding me that not all my youth was misbegotten!

Music for a London Life | Music for a London Life | Scoop.it

Music for this London Life will feature absolutely anything that appeals!

Music that features London ..music that played in London ..that's played in London ..music by those that live in London ..lived in London ..were born here ..visited here ..died here ... and music that has nothing whatsoever to do with London ..it simply makes my London Life happy!

Enjoy the mix!

Thursday Song Choice from MFLL: The April Maze - I've Seen The Rain

"I've Seen The Rain will feature on The April Maze Album 'Sleeping Storm' out Feb 2015. Single out now at www.theaprilmaze.com and iTunes. "

'Mayhew’s masterful guitar, Agam’s visceral, growling cello and her own dark twisted vocal…mean much of this is a series of inky-black fairy tales.'

Mojo Magazine (4 Star review)

“Indie alt-folk, much influenced by the sound (and fashions) of 70s San Francisco, Agam’s voice a rich cocktail of dark molasses and sweet honey.” Folking.com

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

May 2017

Okay, it's May, no longer April, but I am going to play and share  this song from April Maze anyway as, unfortunately, I can still see the rain. And it's a good song. Rain or shine.

Winter 2014

Another exciting new discovery for MFLL .

We love this Gower Coast video from Oxford/Melbourne based alt folk duo The April Maze and will definitely be checking out one of their live shows once they go on tour In 2015. They are also available for house concerts. Oh what a night that would be!

Show of Hands Coming Back Home to Royal Albert Hall

Show of Hands Coming Back Home to Royal Albert Hall | Music for a London Life | Scoop.it

"The phenomenally popular Show of Hands will mark their 25th year with a return to one of the world’s most famous stages – the Royal Albert Hall. Show of Hands are known for their genre-hopping music, which focuses on strong narrative songs often touching on rock, blues and country.

Singer songwriter Steve Knightley and multi instrumentalist Phil Beer have forged one of the most successful ever partnerships in acoustic roots music with four previous sell-outs at this iconic London venue to their name."

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Show of Hands 25 th Birthday Bash @ Royal Albert Hall

"This is the fifth SoH conquest of the redoubtable Royal Albert Hall and it’s worth reminding ourselves that they hire it each time. Yep, DIY hit new levels way back in 2001 when SoH came up with the mad idea to hire not just any village hall (yes, they have done that too Steve Knightley Grow Your Own Gig Solo Tour 2015) but THE most impressive Village Hall in the land. Oh and they fill it. Yes you read that right. They have now had Full Houses or near enough as makes no difference FIVE times. Hats off, guys.

So what is this SoH phenomenon all about? Superb musicianship? Tick. Professionalism? Tick. Voice seduction? Tick. String -playing sensation? Oh yes. Hell, these guys are perfectionists in every detail, from the sound system to the musicians they invite to play with them on stage (hello again Hannah Martin and Phil Henry, always a fine addition to any folk line up and fast becoming folk celebrities in their own right) to the succession of musical collaborators they work with. To the banter and engagement they bring to the ring, having followers in the audience they know by name.

Respect. For people. For their roots. Steve made the point about returning to their roots in their last album The Long Way Home , the title track one of many songs sung to an audience held in the palm of their hand. Steve Knightley is the SoH Showman, the frontman on stage and has the charisma to make fans feel involved and relaxed, just like they would in a small folk club back in Exeter. It’s an extended Devon-based family we are talking about here, brought together through this music. Every five years, the newspaper headlines shout “Devon’s Peaceful Occupation of Famous London landmark!” and for two hours of sustained musical magic, that was not fake news. It happened. I was there.

I was blown away five years ago at their last Big Gig @ RAH 2012 reviewed here

http://sco.lt/8dkAEb

and the seduction continued a year later @ RFH  reviewed here http://sco.lt/8knmq1

What more can I say? This time around? What was to love? There wasn’t a dull note, throughout the two sets but if I have to choose favourites! I loved Miranda Sykes looking like Blondie as she reduced us to tears with The Lily And The Rose. And thank you Steve, last time around I was bitterly disappointed by the absence of The Dive and Galway Farmer, both included, the former reducing me to even more tears, the latter understood so well by this fluttering Irish Heart.

I love the fact SoH never run away from hard hitting political commentary, as in Arrogance Ignorance and Greed. I love that they are the guardians of rural concerns, English in the purist sense, especially highlighting and honouring dead war heroes both local to the West Country and fallen men in The Battle Of The Somme during its Centenary Year. The notable actor Jim Carter read respectfully and movingly on the subject (“That Voice” superbly read The Soldier by Rupert Brooke). There was comic relief! Canadian duo Leonard Podolak and Matt Gordon convinced us that our Hambone was worth treating seriously as a musical instrument. And we had a backing choir of such beauty, The Lost Sound Chorus, a round sound that deepened the musical effect.

I’d like to leave you with a flavour, a taste of what has been and what might well come during the SoH tour. Widecombe Fair was the Steve Knightley opener https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ty1C9Pqzwcg that eased us into an evening full of compelling music.

What I cannot reproduce is the magic of the live show and the startling sight of Phil Beer, my favourite fiddler (and bloody good singer, step back Steve, move over Miranda) appearing like an angelic cherub atop the glittering stage. SoH at RAH? A match made in heaven." UT

Easter Sunday 2017

Looking forward to this 25th Birthday Bash @ RAH on Easter Sunday. For fans old and new, SoH never disappoint. And this show will be special with a capital S.

The show is nearly sold out. Tickets still available at RAH website, link below. While you are there, have a listen to The Long Way Home and you will get a teasing taste of what's in store.

New CD Release: Luke Jackson - Tall Tales And Rumours

Luke Jackson - Lucy and her Camera produced by Raphael Klatzko - LightToneStudios

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:
I became acquainted with Luke Jackson's music some years back http://sco.lt/5IfluT and reviewed his second album Fumes And Faith (2014) here http://sco.lt/9Hh30j .He is still only 22 and his new album (due for release Nov 2016) continues to reflect his serious commitment and ever-growing fascination with the musical possibilities available to him. Life as we well know can be a serious affair and Jackson does not dodge the big issues. His opening track speaks of Glenn Campbell's struggle with Alzheimer's. It's a brave choice as an opener, its dramatic effect relying solely on Jackson's unaccompanied voice. It's powerful and arresting, a song that appropriately harks back to the rhythm of slave songs, given its subject matter. It reaches to your soul. Tall Tales And Rumours is primarily a dark album, shadowy, viewed through smoke-filled rooms rather than rose-tinted glasses. Jackson's intense delivery mainly focuses on familiar themes in well-known local settings, refreshingly viewed through knowing young eyes. Love's conundrums are more jauntily explored in Treat Me Mean, Keep Me Keen and in Leather and Chrome, unrealized dreams may strike a chord with many.

Lucy And Her Camera is that rare beast, a love song with a happy ending! I have selected a Youtube Video from several years ago. Expect a much fuller, more rounded sound on the CD track.

MFLL Album Choice: Nomad from Martha Tilston

From the album 'NOMAD' Release date May 2017 Available in shops and online www.marthatilston.co.uk

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:
24/05/17
MFLL was at the Martha Tilston London gig at Kings Place last week. That voice!  Hypnotic. As a music maker, we will stop just short of saying spell-caster, but once you enter her world, she has you hooked.. What is she? A chameleon, certainly. A shape-shifter, she slips through your fingers as you attempt to define her. A flickering reminder of Joan Baez, when her long hair sits quietly by the sides of her face as she strums her guitar. There's a distinct suggestion of Kate Bush in her prime, when she sits comfortably, compellingly at the piano. At other times, there's a hint of Lisa Hannigan when the hair flows free, enveloping her face as she moves, arms elevated. But such comparisons soon become irrelevant, under the seductive and powerful draw of this singer. Reassuringly grounded, her voice is rich and colourful and commands an impressive vocal range. She's worth seeking out on tour as her live performance will leave you wanting more. Some standout moments include her duet with a viola, a perfectly attuned performance by Luke Yates.  Meanwhile, have a listen to Nomad Blood, from her new album.
