LIVE FROM MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS: The CEOs of Foursquare and Deezer described how they are innovating to drive user engagement in today's keynote at Congress....

 

CEO of music service Deezer, Axel Dauchez, said that innovation is “absolutely critical” but knowing where to focus this innovation is key to driving engagement.

Deezer is aiming to make music a “more intense part of users identity”, according to Dauchez, by providing the means for active music discovery and making the relationship between users and artists more tangible by providing exclusive content.

Integrating the live music experience into the service is also an important element that drives user engagement. “We need to provide a better experience of the gig itself,” Dauchez said.

Although taking down barriers to music discovery is important, Dauchez there is also scope to put in some restrictions to drive user engagement. For example, if a band is making an album, they can make some of music available for a short period of time, which drives a significant rise in user engagement.

Last.fm has announced a partnership with data and analytics platform Musicmetric, an integration that will sit within Last.fm Music Manager, its interface for artists and labels.
Musicmetric is a London-based startup that offers tools to help those that work within the music industry understand consumer behaviour and opinion. Its proprietary technology draws on information from P2P networks, review websites, comments and social networks, pulling in data from millions of sources. And when we first wrote about Musicmetric last May, the company was just in the process of opening its API to developers.

Bandcamp has absolutely killed it with its new mobile-optimized web pages, officially announced in a Bandcamp blog post Monday, which make it incredibly easy to stream music...Every music service has some sort of mobile strategy, so I asked CEO Ethan Diamond about the difference between a good mobile page and a great mobile page. "I think good is being merely functional from mobile, great is tailoring your entire experience for the device." But the proof is in the pudding. A couple days after the soft launch, says Diamond, Bandcamp's mobile sales have already doubled.
