Masters of Media » Music visualizations as a means for discovery | MUSIC:ENTER | Scoop.it
The basic idea behind information visualization (InfoVis) is that it takes an otherwise stagnant data set of facts and numbers and transforms into an imagery filled with visual patterns and elements. While this idea is certainly not new it has been regenerated from the cartographer days to a more modern means to express and exchange information for a variety of purposes. Specifically using visualizations for music has yielded some interesting concepts that transpose the senses from ears to eyes.

Twitter Has Changed The Music Industry, Says Snoop Dogg

Hip hop icon Snoop Dogg is urging all aspiring musicians to embrace Twitter if they want to succeed because the platform has become the “number one” tool for any artist.

Snoop, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, credits Twitter with keeping him in the limelight.

“I feel it’s the number one key in music right now,” he says, “Having that relationship with fans where it’s not based on your record label, it’s based on you. When you are tweeting, it’s not about what label you’re on, it’s about you dealing with your fans directly.”

YouTube to 'school' users in copyright

YouTube to 'school' users in copyright | MUSIC:ENTER | Scoop.it
YouTube is taking steps to stem unlicensed content on its platform by directing infringing uploaders to its new copyright education programme.

Under increasing pressure from copyright holders in the music, film and TV industries, YouTube has introduced its Copyright School in the US. Now anyone posting content that breaks copyright will have to watch an education video and pass a quiz to be allowed to post video files again.

The video features cartoon characters Happy Tree Friends and a slightly tongue-in-cheek voiceover that warns users their account will be terminated if they infringe copyright. It also explains how fair use applies in the US as well as what content users can and cannot upload.

YouTube is now imposing a 'three strikes' policy when receiving copyright complaints. Users can erase strikes against their account by complying with YouTube's terms.

30 new music apps for iPhone, Android and iPad - The Guardian (blog)

30 new music apps for iPhone, Android and iPad - The Guardian (blog) | MUSIC:ENTER | Scoop.it
There's something of an explosion in music apps happening on iPhone and Android at the moment, from official artist apps that look to go beyond pure news and audio samples, through to social location services aimed at gig-goers.

Here's a list of 30 apps that have launched in the past few months, from big stars and startup developers alike. It offers a glimpse at the trends and technologies that make apps as potentially habit-changing for music fans as they are for gamers and TV viewers.

Note, this list is focused on apps that involve listening to or interacting around music, rather than actually creating it. Not because the latter isn't just as interesting – there is a similar boom in innovative music-making apps – but because, well, those apps will sit better in their own list.

Meanwhile, the focus on recently launched apps is why the likes of Spotify, Pandora Radio, Last.fm and others are not included. They're still innovative and important, but this piece is about new contenders in 2011
