The CD, At 30, Is Feeling Its Age

The CD, At 30, Is Feeling Its Age | MUSIC:ENTER | Scoop.it

Today marks the 30th anniversary of a musical format many of us grew up with: the compact disc. It's been three decades since the first CD went on sale in Japan. The shiny discs came to dominate music industry sales, but their popularity has faded in the digital age they helped unleash. The CD is just the latest musical format to rise and fall in roughly the same 30-year cycle.

Thirty years is a long time for cd's  and it is on the decline but it still plays a big role in music and in the sales. In the future streaming will take over the market for good but cd's still should be used in some form.

French Music Streaming Service Takes on the World, but Omitting America

French Music Streaming Service Takes on the World, but Omitting America | MUSIC:ENTER | Scoop.it

The company, Deezer, is one of the biggest players in digital music streaming, trailing only the market leader, Spotify, in the number of paying customers it has attracted globally. Like Spotify, which is based in London, Deezer, with headquarters in Paris, offers subscribers unlimited access to millions of songs on demand, via PCs, mobile phones and other devices.

Deezer just got a big endorsement for its approach. Access Industries, the owner of Warner Music Group, pumped 100 million euros, or about $130 million, into Deezer this month, in what analysts described as one of the biggest investments ever in a French start-up.

“This shows that they think the music market is beginning to turn around,” Axel Dauchez, chief executive of Deezer, said in an interview.

The big music brain that knows what you like - Fortune Tech

The big music brain that knows what you like - Fortune Tech | MUSIC:ENTER | Scoop.it
You probably haven't heard of it, but Echo Nest powers products from the likes of Spotify, Vevo, and MTV.

It began with an argument. Tristan Jehan and Brian Whitman met as Ph.D. candidates at MIT's Media Lab. Both were amateur musicians passionate about the ways technology might recommend songs based on a listener's tastes. Both were convinced that "collaborative filtering," a trendy means of achieving that goal, was woefully inadequate. Their disagreement? Jehan's research focused on teaching computers to capture the sonic elements of music, while Whitman's studied the cultural and social components. In combining the two approaches they created the Echo Nest, one of the most important digital music companies few have heard about.

Approximately 18% of the top 1,000 blogs on Tumblr are fashion-related, but on YouTube, less than 1% of the top 1,000 shows are about fashion.

That’s according to Tumblr CEO David Karp and OpenSlate Studios, which developed the infographic below based on data it has compiled about Google’s video network.

As the infographic illustrates, music and gaming dominate the ranks of popular channels on YouTube, accounting collectively for 45% of the 1,000 most-viewed. Comedy (14%), entertainment (13%), and How-to & Style (7%) round out the top five categories.

Got a solution to the music industry’s tech challenges? Apply for Midemlab 2013

Got a solution to the music industry’s tech challenges? Apply for Midemlab 2013 | MUSIC:ENTER | Scoop.it

Long-running annual music industry conference Midem has (like the industry itself) become increasingly tech-focused in recent times, as we found when we attended it in January this year. In 2013, its startup competition looks set to prove that innovative technology is now just as important as good music.

Midemlab is now in its sixth year, and along the way has provided early exposure for important startups like SoundCloud, The Echo Nest and Songkick. The search is now on for the thirty early-stage tech companies that will take part in this year’s competition across three categories: music discovery, recommendation & creation; marketing & social engagement; and direct-to-consumer sales & content monetization.

This event is a bit different. The EMI Innovation Challenge takes more of an engaging, interactive and entertaining approach with the audience and a panel of judges invited to vote on the start-ups throughout the evening.

Lean Thinking: Converting Ideas Into Music Products

Products often start with a good idea, but a hypothesis is only the first stage of development.

In the music startup world, there needs to be an equilibrium between the fanatical visionary trying to enter a market niche, and the market itself, which is composed primarily of casual listeners that may not share the same vision as the founder.

Identifying that niche can be rather difficult, because one often needs be a fanatic to do so.
