Foursquare, Deezer innovating to drive user engagement

Foursquare, Deezer innovating to drive user engagement | MUSIC:ENTER | Scoop.it

LIVE FROM MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS: The CEOs of Foursquare and Deezer described how they are innovating to drive user engagement in today's keynote at Congress....

CEO of music service Deezer, Axel Dauchez, said that innovation is “absolutely critical” but knowing where to focus this innovation is key to driving engagement.

Deezer is aiming to make music a “more intense part of users identity”, according to Dauchez, by providing the means for active music discovery and making the relationship between users and artists more tangible by providing exclusive content.

Integrating the live music experience into the service is also an important element that drives user engagement. “We need to provide a better experience of the gig itself,” Dauchez said.

Although taking down barriers to music discovery is important, Dauchez there is also scope to put in some restrictions to drive user engagement. For example, if a band is making an album, they can make some of music available for a short period of time, which drives a significant rise in user engagement.

2012 Trends: Cloud-Based Music Streaming - eMarketer | MUSIC:ENTER | Scoop.it

Despite better-than-expected business in the first half of 2011, the recorded music industry remains plagued by a decade-long decline in CD sales—still its core product—and insufficient digital revenue to make up the difference.

Discrete downloads and ringtones were once hailed as promising revenue streams but both have fizzled. Even the company that pioneered the legal download model, Apple, is now pushing a cloud-based alternative, iCloud. Amazon is making a similar push with its Cloud Drive.

The key to the long-term survival of these services is whether they can generate enough revenue for themselves, copyright holders, music publishers and other rights owners in the recorded music value chain.

VEVO CEO Says Future Of Music Is “Access, Not Ownership” | MUSIC:ENTER | Scoop.it

In recent times, the demise of physical music sales has forced many who rely on music generated revue for survival to think outside the square, whilst still remaining ethical and ‘fair’. Many have debated the rippled effects on online music streaming and its impact on both physical sales and artists’ revenue, but one budding CEO has set his sights on restoring the credibility of sourcing music online.

Rio Caraeff, CEO of video streaming service VEVO, which essentially acts like a more exclusively musical focused version of YouTube, has added his voice to the chorus of commenters on the current state of the music industry, of which streaming services and online digital distribution play a crucial role.
