Amazon Prime Adds Music: The Good And The Bad

Amazon Prime Adds Music: The Good And The Bad | Music Industry News | Scoop.it

As predicted, Amazon Prime has joined the ranks of music streaming services today as its new Prime Music service has now gone live. Let’s look at the pros and cons of the Prime Music as it now appears.

Although it’s not publicly stated, it’s reported that Amazon Prime currently has somewhere around 10 million subscribers in the US and around 20 million worldwide. If all were to suddenly engage in Prime Music that would immediately make the service one of the major players in the streaming music world.

The big question is, how many of its subscribers will actually care that they even have the music feature available? Will adding music discourage subscriber churn or even increase its subscriber base? These are just a few of the more interesting questions when it comes to Amazon Prime Music. That said, there’s another new streaming music service now available, and that’s a good thing for the music business....

IFPI - The Evolution of Music in Europe - SNEP

IFPI - The Evolution of Music in Europe - SNEP | Music Industry News | Scoop.it

The music sector has licensed an unprecedented number of digital services and has developed many new business models. Over the past few years, Europe’s digital music market has boomed, with music joining the video games sector as a leading digital content provider, driving consumer take-up of legitimate online services and the take-up of new technologies, from broadband subscriptions to the purchase of smartphones and tablets. Music also fuels social media: 9 of the 10 most like people on Facebook, 9 of the top 10 YouTube videos and 7 of the 10 most followed people on Twitter are artists.

Today, EU consumers have access to over 37,000,000 tracks across over 230 legal digital services. These services offer unparalleled choice to consumers in the EU, with many different ways to consume music, including downloading, ad supported or subscription streaming, online radio and cloud storage.

YouTube To Begin Blocking Indie Labels

YouTube To Begin Blocking Indie Labels | Music Industry News | Scoop.it

It's an open secret that YouTube is preparing to introduce its own streaming music service soon, and in doing so it's revisiting its licensing agreements with all the major and indie labels.

Apparently that isn't going so well on the indie side, especially in Europe where the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN), a global consortium of small labels, is refusing to sign what it deems to be an oppressive agreement.

Dr. Dre could soon become an Apple executive

Dr. Dre could soon become an Apple executive | Music Industry News | Scoop.it

According to Billboard, Apple may introduce both Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine in their new high-up executive roles at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference event next month. Apple is reportedly pursuing an acquisition of Beats Electronics for $3.2 billion, though neither company has gone on record about the deal since it was first publicized last week. The Financial Times originally reported that Apple and Beats could announce the buyout as early as this week, so the companies may choose to wait until the purchase is formally completed before they share more about any influence Dre and Iovine will hold at Apple moving forward. What we know right now is that Dre will be made very rich if the acquisition gets done, though its less clear what his exact duties at Apple will be.
