‘The Problem With Music’ has been solved by the internet

‘The Problem With Music’ has been solved by the internet | Music | Scoop.it

It’s now 20 years since Steve Albini, the legendary rock music producer best known for Nirvana’s last studio album In Utero, penned a seminal essay for the literary magazine, The Baffler.

+

It was titled “The Problem with Music,” and detailed how the entire food chain of the music business was set up to profit from the end product, except for the artists who actually conceived and made it.

'The Problem With Music’ has been solved by the internet says Albini.

I believe Internet hasn't solved anything. It has turned 'The Problem With Music’ into another bigger one: 'The Problem With Music In A Globalized Digital Market’.

Music Industry News 4/10/2014 - YouTube Kills Music Album Sales | Music | Scoop.it
YouTube Kills Music Album Sales

It’s not that much piracy that is affecting the music world, but rather YouTube. A brand new study indicates that the popular video streaming site is the reason why record labels lose millions of dollars each year. Researchers from Fairfield University ...

MATT, JK's insight:

I always knew that YouTube was going to significantly affect music sales...I was wondering when everyone would come to that realization. It just makes too much sense.

Joseph Balado's curator insight, August 16, 2014 10:12 AM

This article is shedding light on the fact that maybe its not illegal pirates killing sales, but maybe it is legal streaming sites. I would think that granted after a lot of plays music on youtube will bring you profit, but if those same listens were on legal purchased albums, sales would be astronomical. I think that the progression of streaming has indeed hit sales more than actual pirating. Yes they are getting financial gain on youtube or least some, but it is fractions to what actual album sales would be financially.

Audio quality is everything. I personally think that the analog sound is easily superior to a digital sound because of the small details that remain intact on a pressed vinyl that simply cannot hang onto a music file.

How we got to where we are in music culture today with the growing rise of technology, an informed public’s insatiable demand for value for their hard earned money in the face of incessant greed, the sad
state of audio archive preservation, and the largest black market the world has ever seen. The whole sure is greater than the sum of its parts. This piece walks a fine line.

The way the industry is set up, it seems a woman in hip hop has a better shot at visibility in the background of a Rick Ross video than on the Billboard charts.
MATT, JK's insight:

I do think it's a little frustrating that we still have to make the distinction between male and female emcees in hip-hop in 2014, but I do understand the nature of the industry and how that creates a patriarchal culture. But I'm glad to see female emcees making an impact in the game.
