Last evening we went to our farm in Peru, NY and decided to put the bug nets on and go pick the chanterelles that had arrived this past week. We found many productive patches, but many were also damaged by boring insects and slugs, however, we still managed a respectable harvest of roughly 10 pounds, certainly enough to enjoy now and to put some up for later enjoyment.
I do predict a second harvest with the next rain cycle as some normal patches were only slightly showing hints of chanterelles. We will see and I will keep you posted.
For those with data driven minds, the harvest locations were on a nroth facing hillside, between 700 and 900 feet in elevation and mostly around Eastern White Pines. The spots I referenced above that should yield slightly more, higher quality chanterelles are in a mixed deciduous woodlot of red oak, beech, maple and hemlock. I also have not spotted any Jack-o-Lanterns mushrooms yet, which makes me deepen my position that this is the preliminary harvest and not the main event.
