That low blood levels of either calcium or magnesium directly increase the excitability of both the nerve endings and the muscles they stimulate. This may cause the spontaneous true cramps experienced by many older adults, women that are prgnant may expeience muscle cramps more that normal.

Symptoms

The symptoms to muslce cramps all depends on the type of muscle that is being worked the most. Like the skeletal muscle when these muscles expeience a cramp it is usually because that muscle is being asked to do excessive work. The sympton can be an onset pain and very painfull or a bulging muscle that can either be seen or felt underneath the skin where the muscle is located. Smooth muscle spasm will cause colicky pain that comes and goes. The symptoms will depend upon the organ involved.

Prevention

Avoid being dehydrated to avoid having a muscle cramp, how much water you drink depends on your health, weight, sex, age, weather, and any medicatioon you may be taking. Keeping hydrated helps your muscles contract and relax and keep muscles cells hydrated and less irritated. Also stretch your muscles, you should always stretch your muscles before and after you use any muscle for an extended period of time.

Muscle cramps are very painful and cause some people to buckle over in pain or not allow them to move because the pain is unbearable. Muscle cramps are extremly common and can last from a few second to an hour and its not common if the cramp lasts longer than that. These cramps are most common in adults and increase with aging, yet children also do experience them. 

 

Cause

A muscle cramp is caused by involuntary and forcable contracted muscle that doe NOT relax. Many different medicines can cause muscle cramps.
