SLMOOC 2014

SLMOOC 2014 | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:

Would you like to explore more virtual worlds? Perhaps you heard something at the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education conference and would like to see how this might apply in your teaching and learning practice?

Consider participating in the 2013 VWBPE MOOC – Virtual Worlds Explorations. There are 2 levels:

1. Just the tours please.
2. Engaging in the MOOC discussions about the tours.

Future Models of Learning - Debate

Future Models of Learning - Debate | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it

Does new technology conflict with or complement established teaching and learning? What is the impact on the teaching profession as we have traditionally known it? Will the power of the internet, with new innovations such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), create an unstoppable ‘avalanche’ of education reform, or are these reforms a false revolution? Can the value of face-to-face quality learning and student-teacher relationships ever really be questioned, at any level of education? Will the class room, lecture theatre, and traditional notion of education space – schools and universities – be usurped by a screen, online and distance learning, or alternative spaces such as the workplace, home, or concert-hall?

The discussion is more than a hour so make sure you're comfortable before you start viewing.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, July 3, 2013 11:03 AM

It should complement. Art and the French language provide a word for what should happen: bricolage. Bricolage is the blending of two materials, in this case traditional and new pedagogy, in ways that might infuse them. A philosophical approach might to use Gadamer and Vico to discuss sensus communis which is the common sense of a community based on wisdom and creativity.

The format is interesting as it is similar to a Ethnograhic Futures Research format gone viral.

The Professors’ Big Stage

The Professors’ Big Stage | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
The MOOCs revolution will go through many growing pains, but it is here and it is real.
Dr. Doris Molero's insight:

Interesting article on how MOOCS are here to stay and that we should keep on learning how to better use them...

"¶Institutions of higher learning must move, as the historian Walter Russell Mead puts it, from a model of “time served” to a model of “stuff learned.” Because increasingly the world does not care what you know. Everything is on Google. The world only cares, and will only pay for, what you can do with what you know. And therefore it will not pay for a C+ in chemistry, just because your state college considers that a passing grade and was willing to give you a diploma that says so. We’re moving to a more competency-based world where there will be less interest in how you acquired the competency — in an online course, at a four-year-college or in a company-administered class — and more demand to prove that you mastered the competency."

Michael Sandel’s Famous Harvard Course on Justice Now Available as a MOOC: Register Today | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
Back in 2009, Harvard political philosopher Michael Sandel made his course, Justice:
Dr. Doris Molero's insight:

How participating in these kind of experiences boots language learning?

Well, since motivation to learn is there already..language doesn't become an obstacle but the way to get the information. These kind of courses based on flip classroom techniques offer digital tools that are available for free in the internet as the use of videos with subtitles, transcripts, and differet readings. Students can work with the help of dictionaries on line or the google translator tool that also offers the opportunity of listening to text in the target language.

Moreover, students get the chance to connect with different communities of practice. Twitter and Facebook become excellent open forums where different people from different backgrounds or cultures that speak the same language can get together to ask and discuss issues related to the course. It's a great opportunity for students to get to know how it is to learn in an university with great professors with great experience. Digital literacies and language are key to be sucessful in these kind of learning adventures. It's a challenge and a great opportunity that is offered for free. It takes students creativity and resilience to conquer the many new chalenges. Thse are the signs of the education of today. So, go ahead and give it a try.. :)

Open Online Courses: Higher Education of the Future? - The Network: Cisco's Technology News Site | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it

I am "teaching" a MOOC, one of those massive, open, online courses through which Coursera and, more recently, edX offer people around the globe challenging learning experiences through a simple internet connection: video mini-lectures, machine-graded problem sets in some courses, peer-evaluated essays in others, discussion boards, and more. There's no cost or credit for the "students" yet, but could this point the way to the "schools" of the future?
