Aurion Learning's curator insight, March 14, 2013 1:10 PM

With so much talk about mobile learning in 2012, it looked set to make a real impact in the way that eLearning was delivered, but many organisations have been slow to uptake mobile learning on a large-scale. Having said that, mlearning is starting to come into its own and will inevitably increase as more people pursue to use personal devices to learn.

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:

MOOC is a model for knowledge-development that has been getting a lot of attention lately. By the time of this presentation, this year’s EVO (Electronic Village Online) sessions will be in their 4th week. One of these sessions, MultiMOOC (Multiliteracies MOOC), is exploring the concept of MOOCs through emulation of a cMOOC, a connectivist one. The session explores the MOOC movement since 2008, assesses its significance in supporting education, and plots its course as MOOCs diverge in purpose while gaining in popularity this far into 2013.

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:

Resilience, Resourcefulness, Responsibility, Relationships, Respect and Reading skills.

This is precisely what I try to bring into my English as a foreign language class, as a mean to fight the fear and difficulties of learning a second language.

Now days, we should help students to be able to cope the stresses in life, prepare for adversity by being confident and caring for what they are getting from education. Also, we should encourage them to be resourcefull, by providing and modeling the use of tools to help them get farther and have a vision of the time they are living, inspiring them to think out of the box.

Teaching them to be responsible for their own learning by allowing them to make decisions, help solve problems and bring in their creativity by presenting their way to do things. Connecting and having relationships, turns to be the best way to learn and colaborate with others. They are not alone, they should join others on a quest to find the best practices to learn and advance.

Respecting other people's vision and ideas of the world will help them empathize, listen and be open to get a better understanding and solutions to problems. At the same time, respecting the students by giving them the benefit of the doubt. Allowing them and inspiring them to prove themselves. Acompaning them all the way until they know they can do the task that has been proposed.

Reading skills is an important matter. Most student when learning a foreign language just translate words. Reading critically is not their goal. they are happy to know just how to say something that's in another language, in their own language. The deepness of the meaning of the words is not important. By teaching them to reflect on the use of the langauge and really understand the message in the text will be helping them to think criticaly. Therefore the learning of the new language will be more effective.

Most educators of a second language worry mostly about the good use of the language, grammar forms, pronunctiation.... that's the content of what we teach.. we should also help students improve these 6 skills and as result contents of the subjet won't be so hard to teach or learn.
