Playing Games Can Yield Serious Learning

Playing Games Can Yield Serious Learning | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
How often do you hear college students say, “that was fun!” on their way out of your classroom? Probably not often enough. Of course, who has time for fun when you have a syllabus packed with serious learning outcomes and one semester to accomplish your goals. Not to diminish the hard work involved in prepping for lectures, but when was the last time you asked yourself: Is my class fun?
Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
An atmosphere of playfulness may work wonders in creating community and building student engagement.

The Psychology of Immersion in Video Games

The Psychology of Immersion in Video Games | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it

Along with “OMGDUDESOAWESOME” one of the words that gamers like to toss around when describing their favorite titles is “immersive.”1 But what exactly does that mean? And what makes a game immersive?

Ask 5 people and you’ll probably get 10 opinions, but psychologists have been studying immersion in various kinds of media for decades so they could probably shed some light on those questions. Except they don’t call it “immersion.” Instead, they call it “presence,” which, admittedly, isn’t as cool. Regardless, researchers have identified several kinds of presence in regards to how we perceive media but it’s spatial presence that I think comes closest to what gamers think of as “immersion.”

The Drax Files: World Makers [Episode 37: Non Profit Commons]

"The barrier to entry in Second Life is very low and for people in the non-profit sector who want to reach a global audience we can make it even simpler!" says Rhiannon Chatnoir aka Joyce Bettencourt in RL, community manager at Nonprofit Commons.

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
Over 60 international non-profit organizations with causes ranging from environmental awareness to LGBTQ activism, AIDS education and Parkinson's support, groups that fight to end homelessness or promote emotional healing with the help of horses, are gathered in the virtual world of Second Life to do everything from training to fundraising.
For over 10 years this global community has been successfully showcasing the powerful force of SL to facilitate social good: at NPC in SL office space is given away free, agency over identity through avatars is a powerful facilitator and ideas for outreach and networking can easily be implemented in the digital realm before committing to them in physical reality.
Joyce adds that despite lack of media coverage "virtual worlds are very much alive because they let people connect and feel immersed in a way that is not available anywhere else, even with current virtual reality technologies. VR at this point is very solitary and frankly not very sophisticated in terms of empowering regular people on a small budget!"
Susan Tenby, founder of NPC in SL and Director of Social Community & Strategic Partnerships at Caravan Studios,, which sponsors NPC, agrees: "We have an ongoing community and that is key: technology in and of itself is not the answer and the reason why Second Life is so successful is because it brings people together. It just works!"

5 "Old Fashioned" Instructional Design Tools You Will Never Throw Away - eLearning Industry

5 "Old Fashioned" Instructional Design Tools You Will Never Throw Away - eLearning Industry | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
ou know the saying: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The simple truth is that there are some Instructional Design tools that may be considered "old fashioned", but they still have a wide range of uses in modern eLearning design and development.
Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
These devices and eLearning platforms should still have a prominent place in your Instructional Design toolbox.

1.  A pen and paper.
These "antiquated" tools gives you the power to put your thoughts onto the page and brainstorm ideas in a more tactile way. you can just focus on the task at hand. It may even be a good idea to create your storyboard and e-Learning course outline with these "old fashioned" tools.

2. Books/Newspapers.
books still have a place in an e-Learning professional’s tool box. In fact, it may be wise to collect a few titles that cover the basics of Instructional Design, such as titles that delve into Instructional Design models and theories, as well as basic e-Learning terms and psychology, particularly those that cover learning behaviors and cognitive processes.

3. Planner/Agenda.
having your own printed agenda on-hand gives you the opportunity to keep track of your personal assignments and due dates without having to hop online or use your mobile device. Some people actually prefer planners because it allows them to quickly jot down important dates or reminders. To get the most out of your printed planner or agenda you should opt for one that offers the ideal layout and features.

4. Face-to-face networks.
Social networks are big these days, but face-to-face networks are still a valuable asset that you should utilize on a regular basis. In-person networking injects a more personal and human element into your conversations. It may not be possible to do this for every meeting or conversation, but you should seize the opportunity whenever you get the chance.

5. Instructional Design Models.
This may not be a tangible tool, per se, but Instructional Design models, theories, and principles can offer real value when you are creating eLearning courses. They give you a better understanding of how the mind works, how online learners absorb and retain knowledge, and how you can deliver information more effectively.

Instructional Design Models and Theories - eLearning Industry

Instructional Design Models and Theories - eLearning Industry | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
The Instructional Design Models and Theories Journey
Our journey starts from the beginning of the 20th century, and includes, inter alia, the famous Pavlovian Conditioning and Skinner’s Operant Conditional Theory, continues through the mid 50s and the first time computers were used in learning environments, the influential Problem-Based Learning inspired by Howard Barrows in the 60s, David Merrill’s Component Display Theory, the Cognitive Flexibility Theory in the late 1980s that aims to develop the learner’s ability to comprehend multidimensional situations, the introduction of multimedia and CD-ROMs in educational environments in the 90s, to the development of WebQuest in 1995, and the launch of the Authentic Learning Model in the late 2000s by Marilyn Lombardi.
Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
This is a very thoughtful and instructive series of articles, with numerous examples from a variety of Instructional Design Models and Theories. Well worth reading. The instructional Design Models and Theories  were carefully researched and evaluated for its value and influence in the instructional design field. Also, you can read about the dominant personalities that profoundly changed education.

elearn Magazine: Immersive Learning for Teacher Professional Development | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it

One of the most emergent and rapidly mutating forms of online and computer-based learning is "immersive environments."

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
As its name suggests, an immersive environment allows learners to be totally "immersed" in a self-contained artificial or simulated environment while experiencing it as real. Immersive environments can offer learners rich and complex content-based learning while also helping learners hone their technical, creative, and problem-solving skills. Because immersive environments are so rich and visual, users tend to be highly engaged.

Immersive environments include virtual worlds, virtual reality programs, Web-based games, multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) and massively multiplayer online games.

Fantasy Faire Quest 2016: The Tale of the Exiles

Fantasy Faire 2016 is coming ... and with it a spectacular new Quest (we're calling it a quest because it combines a Hunt with amazing prizes with more info here: https://fantasyfairesl.wordpress.com/the-fairelands-quest-the-tale-of-exiles/# ;

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
The blessed realm of Belfience was once an idyllic home to a multitude of peoples: Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Mer, and Dragons. All shared the beauty and bounty of the land, prospering together in peace and harmony. But the Unweaver saw their joy, and hated it, and set about to destroy it utterly. Through sly deceits and trickeries, the Unweaver’s minions sowed doubts in the minds of Bellefience’s rulers, and their wisdom abandoned them. The steady drip of poison spread slowly, then faster and faster, hardening the hearts of each people against the others, until cruel war blazed and consumed the realm. Facing certain death, many fled in haste with few possessions, forsaking their homes and a land now sick and blasted, its beauty ruined. Those who remained – wary and grim, huddled into separate enclaves yet determined to hold onto hope – renamed the realm Malfience, for the evil that had been done there. The former Belfience is far distant from the Bard Queen’s realms, and their peoples have known little contact; none in recent memory. And so the Bard Queen was astonished and alarmed to see a flood of desperate, grieving exiles wash up on her shores – people for whom nothing will ever again be the same. Resolving to help, she draws together those realms hosting the exiles into the Circle of the Fairelands, and sends forth her emissary to speak with the exiles and learn of the ill fate that befell them. It becomes clear that this quest is as difficult and dangerous as can be imagined. To repair the evil wrought by the Unweaver, the emissary must find a way not only to brave the deadly perils of Malfience, but also to heal the hearts of peoples torn asunder by war.
