Electronic Village Online : How to make a Machinima for Learners of English

Electronic Village Online : How to make a Machinima for Learners of English | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
MachinEVO is a 5-week workshop in Second Life, for language educators to learn how to produce films for teaching and learning English. It starts on 12th January 2015 and is free of charge. Registrations will be open from 5 -11 January 2015.

A machinima is a film made in a virtual world such as Second Life. The word is derived from combining the words machine and cinema.

A major advantage of creating films in Second Life is that they are far less expensive than real world productions, and a teacher can make them quite easily and very cheaply.

In this EVO session we will learn how to create machinima using screencasting and video editing.. Our videos will be uploaded onto the YouTube or Vimeo hosting sites.

The pedagogical aspects of creating language-learning resources will also be explored.

We will investigate scriptwriting, storyboarding, and making films from live footage.

All participants will work toward the goal of producing a complete machinima by the end of Week 5.

Where does it take place?
All practical sessions will be held in Second Life, we have EduNation, Learn It Town and MOSP open and ready for our use.
There are many other ways of producing machinima of course, but we exclusively use Second Life.
To sign up for a free account and to select an avatar for Second Life, participants need to go to http://www.secondlife.com
Participants need to download the latest Second Life Viewer from that page.

Participants do not have to have experience in Second Life. There is a list of prerequisites on the wiki. We will provide special familiarization sessions for moving, communicating, changing avatars, camera control and so on.

Target audience
Anyone involved in the teaching of TEFL/TESOL who is interested in making machinima for use with learners.

During the first two weeks people who already have experience in SL will help train less experienced participants in basic SL skills and film these first attempts - including entertaining, instructive mistakes ( 'Bloopers',‘Howlers’).for a 'Bloopers' reel.

In the remaining weeks everyone will work in smaller groups to enable each individual participant to come away with a machinima of their own whatever their level of competence.

Life Feast: Chinese Whisper with Whatsapp

Life Feast: Chinese Whisper with Whatsapp | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
The more I use Whatsapp in class, the more I realize how rich this tool is.

Last week, I tried a very simple activity with my Basic Students who had just learned how to express themselves in the Past.

Have you ever played Chinese Whisper with your students? It is an activity where Student A whispers a message to Student B who then tries to whisper the same message to Student C, so on and so forth. Or another one where the first student says "Last weekend, I went to the shopping centre", then the next student repeats the first sentence and adds one more sentence? We adapted these activities using the recording feature of Whatsapp.

Here Be Dragons: The Ecosystem of the Social Age

Here Be Dragons: The Ecosystem of the Social Age | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
The ecosystem of the Social Age is evolving, but one thing is for sure: it’s a foreign land. Everything has changed. The ways we work and play, the ways we connect, the ways we create meaning and become effective.

Which is why agility is key: it’s not a case of adapting to the new world, but rather a case of building the skills to keep adapting. It’s not change from the status quo to a new place of stability, but rather a new world where change is constant and fast, unforgiving and democratised.

You’d spot the dragon on the bottom right. Why? Because medieval map makers used to take more creative license than we are used to today, with our satellite imagery and laser printers. They added monsters and dragons: the phrase ‘here be dragons’ refers to the unknown, the evolving understanding of our new ecosystem and our place within it.

Presentation lessons from Steve Martin's autobiography

Presentation lessons from Steve Martin's autobiography | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
The key is to be consistently good
Martin states that it was never enough to be great some nights and mediocre on other nights. Anyone can be amazing sometimes, he suggests, but the key is to be consistently good.

"It was easy to be great. Every entertainer has a night when everything is clicking. These nights are accidental and statistical: Like lucky cards in poker, you can count on them occurring over time. What was hard was to be good, consistently good, night after night, no matter what the abominable circumstances."

The key to greatness is persistence
There are numerous examples of Martin extolling the virtues of persistence over raw talent.

"But there was a problem. At age eighteen, I had absolutely no gifts. I could not sing or dance, and the only acting I did was really just shouting. Thankfully, perseverance is a great substitute for talent."

"Despite a lack of natural ability, I did have the one element necessary to all early creativity: naïveté, that fabulous quality that keeps you from knowing just how unsuited you are for what you are about to do."
Dr. Doris Molero's insight:

This is great advice for educators, too!!!

You install the plugin to your Google browser, then every time you want to share a link with someone, press the key @ on your keyboard and a small box pops up prompting you to choose the person or email to share it with.

Social Collaborative Technology

Social Collaborative Technology | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
We were out walking yesterday, a group of friends from University, and the subject came onto books: but instead of which books we were reading, we were talking about the ways we consume the content. Kindles, Kobos and iPads, even audiobooks. There was a constant theme: none of us had the answer. We are all experimenting, finding our way. There is no one system that is going to deliver all the functionality and features that you need to support social learning and social leadership. There may well be one mindset though: a mindset for curation, sharing and collaboration. Mindsets persist whilst technology goes through an endless cycle of development and updates.

Get your mindset right and the rest will fall into place: it’s all about collaboration and finding technology that facilitates it.

The Difference of Digital: are all Conversations Equal?

The Difference of Digital: are all Conversations Equal? | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
Some things feel right, some feel wrong, and some are just different. That’s what’s at the heart of my thinking today.

I remember the first time i went on camera: painfully awkward, the sound of my own voice was weird, unknown. A poor quality experience. But now? Effortless, normal, easy. What was different and unusual became commonplace, largely through the democratisation and spread of the technology. That first camera i stood in front of was a broadcast model probably costing $15,000. Today, it’s a fraction of that. The pervasive nature of technology normalises that which was once out of reach.
