Problem-Solving

Problem-Solving | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
Learn about the benefits of problem-solving and how to include it in your teaching. Problem-solving is the ability to identify and solve problems by applying appropriate skills systematically.
Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
Problem-solving is a process—an ongoing activity in which we take what we know to discover what we don't know. It involves overcoming obstacles by generating hypo-theses, testing those predictions, and arriving at satisfactory solutions.

Problem-solving involves three basic functions:
Seeking information
Generating new knowledge
Making decisions

Problem-solving is, and should be, a very real part of the curriculum. It presupposes that students can take on some of the responsibility for their own learning and can take personal action to solve problems, resolve conflicts, discuss alternatives, and focus on thinking as a vital element of the curriculum. It provides students with opportunities to use their newly acquired knowledge in meaningful, real-life activities and assists them in working at higher levels of thinking.

Michael Wesch – Unboxing Stories

http://fost.org/summit/ Apply to attend our 2015 summit now! 2015 Future of StoryTelling Summit Speaker: Michael Wesch Cultural Anthropologist.

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
Michael Wesch Cultural Anthropologist.

A pioneer in digital ethnography, Dr. Michael Wesch studies how our changing media is altering human interaction. As an anthropologist in Papua New Guinea, Wesch saw firsthand how oral storytelling worked for much of human civilization: It was a group activity that rewarded participation, transformed our perceptions, and created a changing flow of stories across generations. Reading and writing replaced oral storytelling with linear, fixed stories. Upon returning from Papua New Guinea, Wesch created the 2007 viral video hit Web 2.0...The Machine Is Us/ing Us, about the Internet's effects on our culture. At FoST, he’ll explore how our evolution from a literate culture to a digital one can return us to collaborative storytelling, resulting in a more engaged, participatory, and connected society.

In this video Michael tells us:

Stories are happenings, shared participatory events...
The web is about connecting people. When media change, our relatioships change, our conversations change, our stories change and we change.
We want connection, participation, spontaneity, mystery, inmersion, involvement.

Now we the use of internet, stories of the future resamble again stories from the beggining. We have struggled to adapt to our environment. Now, we create environments to suit us. We want to live in our stories again.

Digital Storytelling: A Powerful
Technology Tool for the
21st Century Classroom

Digital storytelling has emerged over the last few years as a powerful teaching and learning tool that engages both teachers and their students. However, until recently, little attention has been paid to a theoretical framework that could be employed to increase the effectiveness of technology as a tool in a classroom environment. A discussion of the history of digital storytelling and how it is being used educationally is presented in this article. The theoretical framework, technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK), is described, along with a discussion of how this model might be used with digital storytelling.

The Psychology of Immersion in Video Games

The Psychology of Immersion in Video Games | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it

Along with “OMGDUDESOAWESOME” one of the words that gamers like to toss around when describing their favorite titles is “immersive.”1 But what exactly does that mean? And what makes a game immersive?

Ask 5 people and you’ll probably get 10 opinions, but psychologists have been studying immersion in various kinds of media for decades so they could probably shed some light on those questions. Except they don’t call it “immersion.” Instead, they call it “presence,” which, admittedly, isn’t as cool. Regardless, researchers have identified several kinds of presence in regards to how we perceive media but it’s spatial presence that I think comes closest to what gamers think of as “immersion.”

BBC Learning English - Course: Upper-intermediate /Connected Speech

Connected speech
In normal speech when the sounds /t/ or /d/ come between consonant sounds, they often are not pronounced.
 He doesn't know.
I can't do it.
It's a sandwich.

When a word ends in a consonant sound and the next word begins with a vowel, the first word will link to the second word. This means there is no break between the words, the consonant sound at the end of the first word acts almost like the first sound of the following word.

 He doesn't_often call.
Give_it to me.
Let's Stop_in 20 minutes.

Building Confidence and Literacy through Film-Making - Pushing the Edge Consulting | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
It was one of the most powerful film-making experiences I’ve had with my adult English as an Additional Language (EAL) students.  It illustrated how how we can ‘shoot for the moon’ with our students and actually get there. The key ingredients in our film-making adventures were: a fierce passion for film-making; giving it a go; …
Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
Why are we making videos in an English class? How can we learn English by making videos? This question or variations of it were often asked by my students in the early classes. I had some key lines that revolved around building their confidence and their speaking skills. But rhetoric only goes so far and ‘action speaks louder than words’ as they say. And so it was through the structures that I set up, and we committed to that I was able to win over my students, as exemplified by a number of ‘aha’ moments: Ahh, now we understand what you were saying Greg!

What Is Education For? | Boston Review

What Is Education For? | Boston Review | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
Drawing on the work of Hannah Arendt, Danielle Allen calls for a paradigm shift in the way we think about education, moving away from instrumentalism to the cultivation of civic and social engagement. I find the notion of citizenship as “co-creating” and “world-building” compelling, and I have seen the most profound manifestations of this idea inside a state prison in Massachusetts, where I taught creative writing and literature to a group of men serving life sentences.
Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
Intellectually, our country’s singular focus on testing has turned many schools into places where exploration and imagination take a back seat to training for a remarkably narrow set of skills. Students could be taught to use learning as a way to understand who they are. Instead they learn to equate achievement with a myopic conception of progress reflected on a chart at the end of the year.

Margaret Atwood – A State of Wonder: How Technology Shapes Story

2015 Future of StoryTelling Summit Speaker: Margaret Atwood, Author, The Handmaid’s Tale, Oryx and Crake, MaddAddam

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
As a critic, activist, and award-winning author of speculative fiction, Margaret Atwood has always been looking ahead. In her glances toward the future, she’s often searching for how technology influences content. The digital transition has already run through an entire era of online evolution, fossilizing a first round of experiments that failed to catch on. But serial stories, online collaborations, and sites like Wattpad, which connects tens of millions of new authors, are leading the way in a new wave of innovation. We’ve always told stories—it’s part of our humanity—but how those stories are created and shared is changing all the time, and Atwood’s looking to share her excitement about it at this year’s FoST.

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
#EduNarraMooc
