SLMOOC 2014

SLMOOC 2014 | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it

Digital Empathy

Digital Empathy | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it

Digital empathy is my effort to combine emotional, cognitive, and social skills into a media literacy curriculum. This emerging construct is informed by three theoretical lenses.

These include empathy phenomena (Batson, 2009), which helps frame a definition of empathy as an ability and process;

social information processing theory [SIP] (Walther, 1992) which outlines the differences between face-to-face (FtF) and computer mediated communication (CMC),

and new literacies (Leu, Kinzer, Coiro, Castek, & Henry, 2013), which highlight how new reading and writing skills impact learning in a digital age.

Together, these three lenses showcase how empathy is an integral component of emotional and cognitive development in both offline and online spaces.

How Parents Can Cultivate Empathy in Children.PDF | Making Caring Common

How Parents Can Cultivate Empathy in Children.PDF | Making Caring Common | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it

http://sites.gse.harvard.edu/sites/default/files/making-caring-common/files/empathy.pdf

Empathy is at the heart of what it means to be human. It’s a foundation for acting ethically, for good relationships of many kinds, for loving well, and for professional success. And it’s key to preventing bullying and many other forms of cruelty.

Empathy begins with the capacity to take another perspective, to walk in another’s shoes. But it is not just that capacity. Salespeople, politicians, actors and marketers are often very skilled at taking other perspectives but they may not care about others.

Con men and torturers take other perspectives so they can exploit people’s weaknesses. Empathy includes valuing other perspectives and people. It’s about perspective-taking and compassion.

How can parents’ cultivate empathy? The following are five guideposts based on research and the wisdom of practitioners.

1. Empathize with your child and model empathy for others...

2. Make caring for others a priority and set high ethical expectations...

3. Provide opportunities for children to practice empathy...

4. Expand your child’s circle of concern...

5. Help children develop self-control and manage feelings effectively...

Tenji Takaishi's curator insight, September 15, 12:38 PM

Hello, I'm Carlos Delgado. I'm 20 years old and I study Graphic Design at Urbe, in Maracaibo, Venezuela. I live in the north-west part of the city.

I love comics, mangas, illustration, Caricatures and specially Videogames. I enjoy mostly RPG games like Final Fantasy and Persona games. I work as a Caricaturist for people around the world in the webpage Fiverr. This is the link of my profile: https://www.fiverr.com/tenjidesign/make-a-high-quality-head-caricature?funnel=2014091519313346919411760

I don't like smoking or drinking alcohol, i really dislike people who smokes in your face.

My dreams are living in Canada with my husband and have a print shop and an illustration studio.

I've always liked English, i've studied it since i was 8 years old, the best way to learn english in my opinion is reading on the internet, playing videogames and watching movies in english.

About Graphic Design and Illustration.

When i'm drawing Caricatures for people around the world, i really feel motivated by the different stories people have to tell about the caricature they want, i could be for a holliday, a gift, a business and many other crazy reasons, it's really fun to know so many different -and good looking and interesting- people.

My best ability is drawing Caricatures, Cartoons, and other Illustration, though i'm also good at designing prints.

I work alone, though i love the company of my husband and my brothers when i'm working or having breaks from work.

My best source of help is excellent quality data, which would be Good quality photos for Caricatures, good references for Illustrations, and accurate explanation for designs.

A couple months ago i realized that Drawing and Illustrating is my thing, it's my main source of work and i get better as i work so i really want to focus on that, not only because of profit but also because it's what i love to do.

Reading increases empathy, a high demand skil

Reading increases empathy, a high demand skil | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it

Education is broadening its focus from main academics to include emotional and social skills. Empathy is a skill that is increasingly sought after, not just in classrooms, but also in professional spaces.

But how does one learn empathy?
Read. Read more.

Research shows that reading literature helps readers understand characters, their thoughts, motivations, and feelings.

Readers also predict what will happen next to characters, and link actions to consequences. These skills translate to the real world, where readers can understand the motivations and feelings of people they interact with, as well as predict what they may do next.

Why are employers emphasizing empathy?
