For many of us, these distractions would be Internet-activated: checking email, Facebook, and hey what's this? Google Plus! This is new, can't wait to check this out! We get a pleasant jolt of dopamine in our nerve synapses just anticipating the next Internet event, the classic addiction syndrome, to which many of us succumb at the expense of other things we should be doing. Worse, our brains are being altered in favor of accommodating our newly learned horizontal tracking behaviors and this is drawing resources from areas that used to accommodate our more focused vertical thinking skills. These facts are as certain as global warming. The question is, as with global warming, to what extent should we be concerned?

Teaching in troubled times: Trump, tackling tensions and resting easy!

Teaching in troubled times: Trump, tackling tensions and resting easy! | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it

Teaching in troubled times: Trump, tackling tensions and resting easy!

We live in troubled times. We’re living through an age in which immigrants are routinely scapegoated and blamed for all of society’s ills and the religious practices of millions of people are regularly conflated with the murderous impulses of a tiny handful, while the blood on our own hands, our occupations and human rights abuses are brushed under the carpet. We inhabit a world where lies become truths if repeated enough and where accusations of ‘fake news’ are hurled at journalists working in an increasingly precarious field. Dangerous nationalist delusions are being propagated by powerful millionaires (and billionaires) hellbent on ensuring the focus of public attention is anywhere but on their own business interests. And inevitably the tensions created by the times spill over into our classrooms.

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
I just love reading Hugh Dellar's Lexical Lab articles. He always hit it with his choices on what to discuss and share. This is a very thought-provoking piece to read. Indeed, we are living troubled times.

Teachers in Littleton, Colorado — like teachers in many places — are increasingly asking students to read and write online. Free tools like Google Docs have made it easy for students to work on the same piece of writing at home and at school, and have allowed teachers to explore collaborative writing assignments and synchronous editing with students. There are also many digital tools that can support students as they learn how to read deeply, take well-cited notes, and navigate the writing process.

Oskar Almazan's curator insight, May 16, 1:02 AM
