Fantasy Faire Quest 2016: The Tale of the Exiles

Fantasy Faire 2016 is coming ... and with it a spectacular new Quest (we're calling it a quest because it combines a Hunt with amazing prizes with more info here: https://fantasyfairesl.wordpress.com/the-fairelands-quest-the-tale-of-exiles/# ;

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
The blessed realm of Belfience was once an idyllic home to a multitude of peoples: Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Mer, and Dragons. All shared the beauty and bounty of the land, prospering together in peace and harmony. But the Unweaver saw their joy, and hated it, and set about to destroy it utterly. Through sly deceits and trickeries, the Unweaver’s minions sowed doubts in the minds of Bellefience’s rulers, and their wisdom abandoned them. The steady drip of poison spread slowly, then faster and faster, hardening the hearts of each people against the others, until cruel war blazed and consumed the realm. Facing certain death, many fled in haste with few possessions, forsaking their homes and a land now sick and blasted, its beauty ruined. Those who remained – wary and grim, huddled into separate enclaves yet determined to hold onto hope – renamed the realm Malfience, for the evil that had been done there. The former Belfience is far distant from the Bard Queen’s realms, and their peoples have known little contact; none in recent memory. And so the Bard Queen was astonished and alarmed to see a flood of desperate, grieving exiles wash up on her shores – people for whom nothing will ever again be the same. Resolving to help, she draws together those realms hosting the exiles into the Circle of the Fairelands, and sends forth her emissary to speak with the exiles and learn of the ill fate that befell them. It becomes clear that this quest is as difficult and dangerous as can be imagined. To repair the evil wrought by the Unweaver, the emissary must find a way not only to brave the deadly perils of Malfience, but also to heal the hearts of peoples torn asunder by war.

Caledonia Skytower (Avatar)

Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
Language is an ever-evolving, rich expression of who we are as people, as cultures, and as moments in history. Understanding the language of Shakespeare and Yeats helps us understand their hearts, their times, and the issues that shaped them. Such knowledge equips us to face the challenges of our own age and create new stories for future generations. To meet this potential, language arts learning must challenge itself to be more than a simple trip from “once upon a time…” to “and they lived happily ever after.”
Caledonia Skytower will explore the unique properties of virtual worlds for language arts including accessibility, immersion, and social interaction. There are not a few challenges too: technological barriers and respect for copyright. Using a “three dimensional Power-Point,” she will explore the possibilities in not only providing the skin and sinew of a plot line, but the very bones and muscle of language itself following the ancient tradition of the bards.
Where could immersive language arts be taken on a virtual platform? Come, gather round the fire and explore the possibilities. Caledonia shares her experiences in building dynamic language arts virtual programming from the work of Seanchai Libraries.
Session Objectives
Virtual worlds are rich in opportunities for language arts learning. It’s easy to envision them as stand alone constructs that learners navigate to an educational end game. That is certainly one valid path. Another equally valid path is a re-creation of the skin and sinew of a plot which learners can wander through. Caledonia Skytower of Seanchai Libraries asks the questions:
Are these the only virtual options for language arts education?
In a time when we see language evolving into single character expressions of syllables and words, where is the place in a virtual learning experience for F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Herman Melville?
All over grids you can find clever, beautiful, informative creations. Many of them are empty when you visit. Does that really meet the potential of the virtual platform as an educational and cultural tool?
This session will touch on several approaches now in use for language arts learning, while focusing on the live spoken word as a dynamic, socially interactive method for engagement in a virtual environment.

ACRL-Virtual Worlds Interest Group: Book discussion- Reclaiming conversation - The power of talk in a digital age | Mundos Virtuales, Educacion Conectada y Aprendizaje de Lenguas | Scoop.it
Valibrarian Gregg presented the basic premises of Sherry Turkle's book, "Reclaiming Conversation" and led a discussion of librarians and educators as we examined communication in the digital age.  In her book Turkle makes the case that reliance on digital technology has led to people feeling less empathy and less a sense of connection with others.  She examined conversation and communication amongst digital natives and conducted interviews with them.  She suggests that much of what makes us human is lost because we've replaced face-to-face conversation with digital, electronic communication.
Dr. Doris Molero's insight:
Turkle, a clinical psychologist, has been writing about human relationships in the digital age for a while now. She is a technology insider (she holds an endowed chair at M.I.T.), who has changed her mind about the role technology should play in people's lives. She presents her findings as a call to arms that it's time for people to reassert themselves and put technology back in it's proper perspective. She makes a good case for setting limits on digital technology and taking a look at the value of face-to-face conversations and real human contact.

Nonprofit Commons: Creating Impact Through a Community of Practice
Nonprofit Commons (NPC) was designed to create a community of practice for nonprofit professionals, librarians, and social good focused technologists to explore and learn about virtual worlds such as Second Life, and to investigate the many ways in which organizations might utilize these unique environments. Through this community, NPC provides space to qualifying groups, holds regular meetings and network events, offers peer mentoring, and has created a cooperative, social-civic good focused learning environment that fosters outreach, education, fundraising, and impactful mission building, all in a virtual space. In this panel presentation, members of the Nonprofit Commons in Second Life community will share peer-based learning strategies, community development best practices, and stories of how using a virtual environment as part of this collaborative community of practice have impacted their work and individual organization missions.
Session Objectives
Members of the Nonprofit Commons in Second Life community will share community development best practices, peer-based learning strategies, and stories of how using a virtual environment as part of this community of practice has impacted the work and missions of the cross-disciplined group made up of nonprofits, librarians, social-good focused technologists and educators.
