Transcoding Best Practices: Mezzanine Formats

Transcoding Best Practices: Mezzanine Formats | Multiscreen Video | Scoop.it

First things first – What is a Mezzanine format? A mezzanine format is a mid-rez working copy of your video asset which is of sufficient quality to generate your highest output, but small enough to move around, archive, and work with. The goal is to free up resources once all major edits and processing are completed. The source of your mezzanine format can come from many places. When encoding from a tape with a fully completed asset, the encode can be the mezzanine file. When exporting from a non-linear editor such as Final Cut or Avid, the format chosen as the output can be a mezzanine. The point is, all major editing and processing is completed in the highest format available and this smaller asset can take it from here.

Please Don’t Ruin The Second Screen

Please Don’t Ruin The Second Screen | Multiscreen Video | Scoop.it

Developing a single second screen app that can deliver value for all types of TV programming is incredibly tough. It’s incredibly tough because every show is different and every genre has its own unique challenges. Dramas are different than reality shows, which are vastly different from news programs. And let’s not even talk about sports – that’s its own beast in itself.

Long story short, it’s hard to get the perfect second screen experience for everybody. Is it social, is it about content, is it loyalty? Is it all of the above? Even if you were to do all of the above, how do you get people to remember your app exists when people watch TV? How do you sustain audience while someone watches TV?

The question ultimately is: which experience is the most meaningful for me, the most personalized for me, and is available consistently every time I watch TV?

IBC 2012: Clash of Four Second-Screen Titans | Multiscreen Video | Scoop.it
The recent International Broadcasting Convention highlighted multi-screen services: service delivery platforms and video gateways.

Anyone experienced in going to major trade shows knows that there’s no way you can cover all the ground or uncover every gem hidden along the path, especially at a tradeshow as big as the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam. My own search criteria were at the intersection of TV software – which has always been my focus – and multi-screen delivery, the big news at IBC this year.

Bell Labs: Fixed broadband networks “to be pushed to their absolute limits” by video »

Bell Labs: Fixed broadband networks “to be pushed to their absolute limits” by video » | Multiscreen Video | Scoop.it

With Christmas expected to bring another leap in ownership of tablets, smartphones and other devices, a study from Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent, suggests that increasing consumption of video content on such devices will push the wired broadband networks that carry this traffic to their absolute limits over the next decade.

Bell Labs’s projections suggest that, by 2020, consumers in the United States alone will access seven hours of video each day, up from 4.8 hours today, and will increasingly consume this additional video on tablets, both at home and on the go.

Significantly, the research also points to a dramatic shift in viewing habits, as consumers switch from broadcast content to video-on-demand services, which will grow to 70 per cent of daily consumption compared with 33 per cent today.

The actual amount of video content to be found on the Internet is predicted to increase by a factor of twelve over the next eight years as cloud services, news sites and social networking applications become more video-based, and continuously accessible anywhere, anytime on tablets.

Importantly, the study also highlights how these trends will stretch the capabilities the residential broadband networks many service providers use today: as the delivery of video content rapidly moves from traditional broadcast TV to the ‘unicast’ delivery of personalised content to individuals, disproportionate pressure will be placed on the ‘Internet Protocol edge’ of these networks, says Bell Labs.

“Delivery of video from the cloud and from content delivery networks to tablets, TVs and smartphones – with guaranteed quality – presents an exciting new revenue opportunity for communications service providers, but only if they are prepared to take advantage of it,” said Marcus Weldon, CTO of Alcatel-Lucent.

“Left unmanaged, the rapid growth in video traffic can turn into a deluge and spell disaster. It is important to look at where service providers’ investments can have the most impact, and this research makes clear that the IP edge of both wireline and wireless networks – which are increasingly becoming one and the same – offers the greatest opportunity to improve network performance. At the same time, it also presents the greatest source of risk if not managed appropriately.”

Bell Labs found that on-demand video services, such as high definition premium movie services as well as video sharing sites, will become even more popular over the next five years.

As a result, on-demand video will command an increased share of viewing hours, causing peak-hour traffic at the ‘edge’ of new IP-based networks to grow 2.5 times faster than the amount of traffic on the broadband connections reaching households.

This challenge will need to be addressed, comprehensively, if communications service providers are to maintain their ability to deliver high-quality residential multimedia services to consumers, concluded the report.

It is no secrete that video copnsumption on mobile devices is growing exceedingly fast. Most of this conumption occurs in sedentary mode, over WiFi in fixed residential networks.

BBC offers solution for connected TV fragmented market

BBC offers solution for connected TV fragmented market | Multiscreen Video | Scoop.it

While many connected television devices and displays now support web standards such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript, they invariably differ in their capabilities and conformance to standards. The BBC has developed an abstraction layer to decouple its own applications from these underlying device complexities. The corporation is planning to make its TV Application Layer available to third parties to help stimulate the market for connected television applications.

Although the emerging HTML5 specification is often seen as the solution to interoperable web applications, in practice there are many differences in compatibility between devices that claim support for web standards. This is a familiar problem on the web but the fragmentation of different flavours appears to be even more of an issue with consumer electronics products.

The BBC TV Application Layer or TAL attempts to deal with the differences between devices, such as remote control key mapping, media player interfaces, networking and storage. In theory this means that the BBC can develop and deploy applications on a well-defined interface without being aware of the specifics and idiosyncrasies of each device.

Joint solution reduces cost, complexity, and turnaround time for QoE reporting of multiscreen adaptive bitrate.

Edgeware and Skytide have created a joint solution for providing QoE (quality of experience) metrics in real-time for large-scale adaptive bitrate usage. Noting that adaptive bitrate video creates challenges in measurement, since it can involve tens of thousands of files for one movie, the two companies have created a system that simplifies reporting complexity.
