"Game designer and researcher Jane McGonigal vouches for an exciting concept: the powerful motivations that drive us to play games should motivate us in off-game, real-world scenarios. For example, encouraging a community to recycle, or persuading more students to learn science. According to McGonigal, games have such a strong influence because they:"

3 Useful Google Docs Add-Ons

3 Useful Google Docs Add-Ons | multimedias for education | Scoop.it

"Google Docs Add-Ons are new tools created by 3rd party developers that add functionality to Google Docs. Users can access and search for Add-Ons through the menu bar in any Google Doc or Spreadsheet."

Beth Dichter's curator insight, July 30, 9:17 PM

If you use Google Docs and you have not yet checked out the add-ons you might want to look into them. Here are three add-ons suggested by Susan Oxnevad.

* Clipboard by Diigo provides "a sidebar clipboard for managing content." You can copy and paste information onto the clipboard, and move the information into the document as necessary. If you have students using Clipboard by Diigo make sure they also keep track of all their sources.

* Mindmeister is a concept mapping program that will take a bullet point list and create a mindmap.

* Text Help provides highlighting tools.

Additional information on each of these tools is in the post.

Zahid Yakoob's curator insight, July 31, 2:08 PM

Perhaps the beauty of Add-Ons lies in the fact there is an entire store full of 3rd party tools to choose from and users can self-select their own tools. Google has published documentation to help developers create their own Add-Ons, which indicates that new Add-Ons will frequently appear. To grab an Add-On, select the Get Add-Ons option from the Google Docs menu bar to jump to the Add-Ons store. After you select an Add-On it will appear in the Add-Ons menu of all your Google Docs., ready for use.

Gary Harwell's curator insight, August 1, 2:38 AM

Remember that these are all document by document.

Presentain - Present. Engage. Grow.

Presentain - Present. Engage. Grow. | multimedias for education | Scoop.it
Presentain helps speakers engage and grow their audiences. You use smartphone as a clicker and audience can connect to your presentation using their devices. They can ask you questions, participate in polls, send you follow-up requests, share your slides and more. While you present Presentain records your voice so when the presentation is over you can publish the slidecast (presentation slides with voice-over) and start growing your online audience.

John Dalziel's curator insight, July 31, 3:39 AM

The most exciting part of Presentain is its interactivity.
Viewers are given a pin to log in to the presentation on their device allowing them to interact.
They can view the slides on their device as you present them, and share any they like on their social networks.
They can also submit questions which users will see as a notification on their smartphone.
Users, practitioners or learners can create polls and multiple choice questions, viewing the responses in real time.
They can use their smart phone as a clicker, record the live presentation and share it later, and their audience can use Presentain to request a follow up action, such as to request a copy of the slides.
Drawbacks? Users currently can’t show embedded video in the presentations, and they can’t include animations or transitions. Presentation is compatible with either Google Slides or other slides converted to PDFs.

Digital Sustainability's curator insight, March 31, 11:19 AM

Today Mark Zuckerberg announced on—where else, Facebook—that his company is indeed looking to spread the Internet via drones, laser beams and other space-aged stuff.

Rumors surfaced earlier this month that the Web giant was looking into purchasing Titan Aerospace, a maker of solar-powered drones that can fly at roughly 65,000 feet for indefinite periods of time. Now Zukerberg, and the Internet.org foundation, announced the launch of the Connectivity Lab (check out a video about the project here), which will explore methods of transmitting the Internet to more of the world—including via laser beams from above.

“In our effort to connect the whole world with Internet.org, we’ve been working on ways to beam internet to people from the sky,” Zuckerberg said in a post. The lab, he said, is working on ways to deliver the internet to everyone, which in addition to drones and lasers include satellites. “Our goal with Internet.org is to make affordable access to basic internet services available to every person in the world.”

“We’ve made good progress so far,” Zuckerberg said, observing that the number of people in Philippines and Paraguay with access to the Internet increased by 3 million. “We’re going to continue building these partnerships, but connecting the whole world will require inventing new technology too. That’s what our Connectivity Lab focuses on, and there’s a lot more exciting work to do here,” he explained.

While rumors surfaced about the potential acquisition of Titan today’s news is focussed on Facebook’s acquisition of U.K.-based aerospace firm Ascenta. The company’s five-person team have built high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) aircraft, including the world-record holding Zephyr, which flew 336 hours and 22 minutes unmanned. In addition to the Ascenta team, the Connectivity Lab has members from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and Ames Research Center, according to Zuckerberg.

The organization, Internet.org, consists of a number of tech companies including Samsung, Nokia, Ericsson, Qualcomm, and more. The companies banded together in effort to bring the Internet and its capabilities, including education and connectivity to more of the world. Doing it the way it was done in the U.S. or Europe via phone and/or cable lines requires huge amounts of infrastructure spending, spending that many parts of the world might not be able to do. By using these novel technologies, the organization could bring the Internet to more of the world for less.

For more densely populated areas the team is investigating the drones. For other areas with less people it’s investing using satellites to beam the Internet down. Both systems would use Free-space opticalcommunication, or FSO, a infrared laser beam technology.

Facebook and friends aren’t the only ones investigating connecting the world through the air. Google’s Project Loon launchedlast year. Already the company has expanded the program.

Office Mix is a new offering for practitioners, from Microsoft, which turns their PowerPoints into interactive presentations.

NOTE: Mix works with the 2013 version of PowerPoint by adding a tab with a number of tools to the interface.
Using Mix, a microphone and webcam, users can record themself narrating the slides and have this play along with their presentation.
They can also record screencasts and embed them into their slideshow.
Users can include interactive quizzes and polls, and they can receive feedback on how each of their learners performed on these.
Office Mix is very intuitive to use.
Mixes can be shared online and viewed on multiple devices.
It’s a great tool for blended learning activities.

With SaaS, many of the challenges associated with the traditional software distribution model are eliminated right off the bat, essentially making a big data deployment much less of a hassle to deal with.

In an SaaS arrangement, a service provider:

1. hosts the software and delivers it to you over the web.

2. handles all the grueling maintenance aspects that come along with it behind the scenes.

Microsoft's Windows Azure HDInsight is the perfect example of such an application.

Right now, big data applications are limited in comparison to other fields, but there will surely be more variety available soon.
