A mini-course on network and social network literacy

A mini-course on network and social network literacy | Multiliteracies | Scoop.it

C Pierce at Harvard has just reminded me of this post of Howard's and the comments we left on it that led to some people to notice http://goodbyegutenberg.pbworks.com and discussions in SCoPE that were going on at the time.  Still worth paying some infotention to :-)

elearnspace › MOOCs, Learning Points

George Siemens responds to Carol Edwards's critique of her experience with Coursera/Udacity style MOOCs (linked in the post) with reasons why connectivist MOOCs cannot be measured by the same metrics.  This reminded me of one of the Change MOOC sessions which caught my attention to the extent that I listened to it twice, so I left a comment referring to the Rich DeMillo, Ashwin Ram & Mike McCracken talk on Social Networks, Learning Communities and Web Science. My hopefully not too simplistic take-away from the talk and PDF http://gtmooc.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/web-concepts.pdf is that the way institutions see “the value points of a hierarchical controlled system” is normally in terms of bell curves; whereas more valid insights might be gained from measuring connectivist learning in terms of power laws, which produce long tail curves, the implications of which were pointed out in the talk.

I think this is Tom Barrett's web site: "The Interesting Ways series continues to be a great example of crowdsourcing good quality classroom ideas and it has been a privilege connecting with all of the people who have taken time to add an idea.
It is remarkable what can be achieved and created together if you give people the right way to do it. Thanks for all the help so far."

Digital Skills for the 21st Century Workplace

Gavin Dudeney draws on past life as a standup-comic to deliver his plenary talk at the 2012 IATEFL BESIG Annual Conference in Stuttgart.  This lasts for an hour, so allocate time for it :-)

He describes his talk as follows:

What digital skills do teachers in the 21st century need - and what do they need to know about the digital skills and lifestyles of the people they're teaching? Where is the intersection between technical proficiency and pedagogical and content knowledge? How do we work with digital literacies in our teaching, helping our learners move beyond a comfort level with technology to more proficient use of their everyday tools in the service of their learning? And why are teachers increasingly encouraged to have their learners turn mobile phones back on in class? In this plenary I look at the wider significance and impact of technologies and consider exactly what the 21st century teacher needs to do to stay abreast of the always on, always connected world around them .

Massive Open Online Courses Are Multiplying at a Rapid Pace

Massive Open Online Courses Are Multiplying at a Rapid Pace | Multiliteracies | Scoop.it
Massive open online courses are the educational happening of the moment. Everyone wants in. No one is quite sure what they’re getting into.

John Hibbs calls our attention to this article.  In his words:

"Today's NYTimes had a special 38 page section called "Education
Live" which I believe is published quarterly. On the cover - no
surprise - was the photo of a rabbit which was wearing eye glasses ---
looking through double O's in the acronym MOOC.
The text above and below the rabbit reads:

Massive and Multiplying
The latest word in online learning -- MOOC'

toward the bottom the words
Merit badges, Mozilla Style"

This is what M.C. Escher would have churned out if he'd had a computer ... "So I found a stupid photo of my face and decided to make a video out of it. Why? Just because." Thanks to Barbara Dieu for this one and the wakky TALO Teaching and Learning Online list for their attempts to 'occupy' education and providing the mill from which out popped this bit of grist.
