What was this about? This is an annual EVO event where moderators for the EVO sessions listed at  http://evosessions.pbworks.com  meet from noon GMT in Google Hangout to talk about their sessions and take questions from interested participants.

The EVO 2013 Mega Launch turned out to be Google+ Hangout, Second LIfe, WiZiQ and Elluminate tech soup, all skillfully juggled by master wizard behind the curtain Jeff Lebow, who posted his take on the event at http://webheadsinaction.org/content/evo2013-launch-webcast

 

Ten people at a time can be in a Hangout, but the event was streamed so that anyone could listen to the stream while it was being broadcast or later via the recording.  The stream bounced in and out of Google+ Hangout, Second LIfe, WiZiQ, and  Elluminate, where EVO moderators met up to speak about their sessions if they didn't join us in the Google Hangout.

I like everything. Or at least I did, for 48 hours. Literally everything Facebook sent my way, I liked---even if I hated it.

This is a wow article about someone who decided to like everything on Facebook, and the article traces how the author's feed changed. Within a day (within a sleep overnight) Mat's feeds became devoid of people, only robots shouting like me like me. Do NOT try this at home.

How much access to your (and your friends') personal data are you prepared to share for access to free mobile apps? I suspect the amount is significantly less than that which you actually agreed to share when blindly accepting the Terms of Service.

Interesting article making the point that FB's new Messenger App comes with a potentially serious set of ToS: "Facebook's Messenger App, which boasts over 1,000,000,000 downloads, requires the acceptance of an alarming amount of personal data and, even more startling, direct control over your mobile device ... In a way, it pays to offer some personal information for a better experience with online ads, which we all hate so much. However, Facebook Messenger's attempt to collect so much information and take control of our devices is unprecedented and, quite frankly, frightening. The fact that over a 1,000,000,000 people have accepted these terms is an alarming insight into the future of mobile apps and personal security." Solution? As a first step, delete the new app. You don't need it, you can find the same features available within the existing Facebook app on your mobile device, Longer term? Always read the terms of service.

Learn a new language faster than ever! Leave doubt in the dust! Be a better sniper! Could you do all that and more with just a zap to the noggin? Maybe. Sally Adee, an editor at New Scientist, was at a conference for DARPA - The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency - when she heard about a way to speed up learning with something called trans-cranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). A couple years later, Sally found herself weilding an M4 assualt rifle, picking off enemy combatants with a battery wired to her temple. Of course, it was a simulation, but Sally's sniper skills made producer Soren Wheeler ...

Trans-cranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a way of stimulating your brain through $20 worth of hardware and a 9-volt battery. It’s a subject of research with very interesting results (100% performance on cognitive tasks that in pre-test were not performed particularly well). The task it works on depends on where you place the wires. Apparently people are experimenting with it and posting videos to YouTube. It has been found to increase focus on text so that comprehension in L1 improves dramatically though it hasn’t been tested on L2. Subjects go into ‘flow’ state where they are absorbed in the task to the point they lose track of time.  RadioLab do the usual great job on reporting on the procedure.

Before sharing your digital photographs over email or on a public website, learn how to remove the camera EXIF data, GPS location and other metadata from these images.

This short article was linked from a post about a project that tracks where people are who take photos of their cats, through metadata in the photos, http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/07/23/upshot/what-the-internet-can-see-from-your-cat-pictures.html. If you don't wish to broadcast your location via photos you post, "There’s a free Windows utility called QuickFix that can help you here. Simply drag-n-drop the photographs in the QuickFix window and click the Clean Metadata button to remove all identifiable information from the photographs. It creates a new copy and won’t overwrite your original photographs.

QuickFix will not only delete the EXIF data and the GPS location information from your photographs but also the IPTC and XMP tags that may have added by the photo editing application.

Microsoft also offers a free utility called Pro Photo Tools that you may use to edit as well as delete common metadata from digital photographs including the GPS location.

An Alternative Way to Remove EXIF Information

If the photographs are in one folder, you can easily remove the EXIF data from one or more of these photographs using Windows Explorer itself without requiring any additional software.

Select all the images files, right click and choose Properties. Now hit the Details tab and click on the “Remove Properties and Personal Information” link. The next screen will give you an option to remove the various metadata that is embedded inside the pictures. Simple."

Instead, gamification is a design sensibility ... Contrary to Marshall McLuhan’s assertion, I really think the medium is only the delivery vehicle, it is not the message (and lots of media research backs that assertion.)" If you're experiementing with social network sites you might discover that you are driven crazy by each one's cavalier treatment of your logo. In case you'd like to do better than upload your graphic and hope for the best, here's someone who's put some work into figuring out what each requires (today, subject to change of course). As Jeff Berezny says: "  It would be nice if all of the platforms used the exact same dimensions and you could just swap photos between them all so that your brand has a nice consistent look across the board. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Social media has proven itself as a crucial component of a brand’s marketing mix, but with the many different platforms, it can be very difficult to put forth a consistent brand image online. For that reason, we put together ‘The Ridiculously Exhausitive Social Media Design Blueprint’.  It features all of the major design dimensions for all of the major platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIN, YouTube, Pinterest and the most recent entry, Instagram."
