Excellent post... I am not musician but I have noticed that musicians are really smart, passionate and hardworking practicers. In this post Jeremy Harmer explores what musicians can teach us language learners to gain fluency, and accuracy. He reflects on repetition and drilling ending up with more questions:

1. How should students practise language in class? In short problem-solving bursts or in long communicative flows?
2. Is homework done better in short frequent bursts or in less frequent longer chunks?
3. What kind of ‘concentration’ is appropriate for language learners?
4. What does appropriate correction look like? Is ‘reformulation’ even remotely useful? Or are what Wong and Waring (2009) call ‘pursuit’ questions and ‘problematizing’ student responses the way forward?
5. What does good repetition look like?

It's worthy to check on comments to the post ...they are really good. Benjamin'metaphor of Jazz practice is great... Practice with an aim..practice where you have problems.. don't give up.. and keep on practicing. Luiz Otavio Barros recommends drilling but with a new sexier name.. :). He gives us some recommendations:

a. Use drilling for functional language and ready-made sentences mostly. Don’t ask students to recite the verb to be.
b. Make sure students know what they’re saying, at all times.
c. Make sure your lesson includes a wide variety of activity types, not only controlled practice.
d. Make sure some of your drilling bears at least s o m e resemblance to real life communication (interaction, choice, feedback etc).

Idioms? Not my cup of tea.

Idioms? Not my cup of tea. | Multilíngues | Scoop.it

I’ve always had a strange sense of foreboding when teaching idiomatic expressions. A while back I was teaching a lesson based on personality, and we ended up looking at some idioms: couch potato, wet blanket, backseat driver, chip on your shoulder, etc. We explored the meaning, did some practise, then discussed some questions about people we know who these could apply to. Fine. The students learnt and practised the idioms, they were happy to learn what they described as ‘real’ language, and I enjoyed exploring these blithe plays on language.

Among writers quoted in the current edition of the OED, Dickens lags
behind only Shakespeare, Scott, Chaucer, Milton, and Dryden for total
number of citations (9,218). No one in the past two centuries comes
