Transforming Education Starts In Your Classroom

Transforming Education Starts In Your Classroom | Multi-tiered Systems of Support | Scoop.it

If it’s a standards-based, outcomes-based, institutionally-centered (and nationally participative) game we want, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better combination than Understanding by Design units (i.e., Wiggins) anchored around power standards (e.g., Strong, Silver, Perini, Dufour) that are then delivered through differentiated instruction (i.e., Tomlinson) via research-based instructional strategies (e.g., Hattie, Marzano), and then assessed persistently in a climate of assessment (e.g. Stiggins) that adequately reflects the complexity of the given standard.

Learners Should Be Developing Their Own Essential Questions

Learners Should Be Developing Their Own Essential Questions | Multi-tiered Systems of Support | Scoop.it

"Being good at asking questions is the art of identifying those gaps, sorting them, and figuring out how to fill them. Considered that way, it is a strange skill: “the ability to organize your thinking around something you know nothing about,” said Rothstein."

Patrice Bucci's curator insight, September 29, 2013 7:00 PM

So true... I cringe when I am in classrooms with the packaged program "essential question" of the week on the board...and very often those "essential questions" lack cognitive clarity for the students

Mary Clark's curator insight, January 8, 1:33 PM

A great summary of why questioning still matters.  We've been talking about metacognition a lot this year in the library.  Learning how to develop questions is a large part of learning how you learn and think.

Stacey Jackowski's curator insight, February 19, 8:20 PM

This quote is so true.  Learning how to ask essential questions is a skill that we can carry with us for the rest of our lives and facilitates a lifetime of learning.

Writing: Unit planner using 'backwards design' that aligned to Common Core

Writing: Unit planner using 'backwards design' that aligned to Common Core | Multi-tiered Systems of Support | Scoop.it

"I’ve been working on a multi-day or unit planner based in a backwards design format that also aligns with the Common Core. Today, I finished with a prototype I think is worth sharing. As a template model, I have designed the planner for grade 2, but based on feedback from my readers, I plan to make appropriate edits and create a similar format for each grade, K-12. I will offer the resultant planners on my website at no cost through the start of school, just as I am doing right now with the PARCC Aligned Writing Rubrics.   So please, download this WordForm and take a look. I’m really looking forward to hearing what you think!"
