Technology is making multi-tasking easier and easier, but is there a price? How does multitasking affect learning? Is it overloading our brains or does it help develop skills necessary for effective learning?
The current Moodle MOOC is in its second week. The participants are eager to learn and share their explorations, learning and teaching experiences, and findings with each other. The energy is high for sharing and learning.
WizIQ live virtual class is free for educators. It is great for e-learning, conducting meetings and webinars, streaming face-to-face conferences and campus-based classes, preparing videos for the flipped classroom and for blended learning, and as a course management system. The interface comes in 14 languages and it can be customized to suit your needs. I have been using it since 2007 and have never looked back.
John Dewey tried to defend the Alexander technique as scientific and valuable to know. In an introduction to a book written by the founder of the technique, Dewey summarizes one of Alexander's premises that one cannot judge whether things will work or not if "one uses the very conditions that need re-education as one's standard of judgement" (see The Use of the Self by F. M. Alexander, 1932,1985). We need to change our strategies unless we want to to get the same results. So, read this with an open mind and try something different, now: http://www.wiziq.com/blog/make-money-online-now/
FYI, there's a hacker with a great spam if you fall for it, which I did. It comes from your twitter contacts and it says someone is saying bad things about you. A link follows the message. If you click on the link, your twitter account is hacked and it begins to send the spam. I changed my password so I'm out of the loop, but the game is still on so don't click on the link if you get the message from someone else. So, if you are curious and click on the link, people will be saying bad things about you.
Let's make our online presence a good one by warning each other so we do not fall into the traps that are being developed as I write this. Let your friends know about this hacker so that we can have a safe online exchange.
eduMOOC is requiring most of us to multi-task. As a face-to-face high school teacher, my students and I have to deal with multitasking in and out of the classroom. How does multitasking affect learning?
Don't believe the multitasking hype, scientists say. New research shows that we humans aren't as good as we think we are at doing several things at once — but it also found a skill that gives us an evolutionary edge.
Task for Week 1 Questions are important to learning. I follow the KWHL method of acquiring information. The idea behind the method is for participants to learn about what they know and decide what they wish to learn.
You will create a chart and plot what you know, what you want to learn, how and where you will get the information, and summarize what you learned. You then go back and list what you know, what you would still want to learn and so on. Learning is ongoing and so is the KWHL process.
Task for Week 2 In week 2, participants will learn about and create engaging activities for other teachers in the MOOC. Please team up and learn about your fellow Moodlers' students and how to create engaging activities for them. The task for week 2 is to demonstrate the activity you learned in real time. Yes, you will be teaching and recording/video tapping yourself as you do. This is not an "about" task. It is the real thing. You may work in teams and co-teach the activity.
Task for Week 3 In week 3, participants will learn about and demonstrate how to teach and learn online. The task of the week is to conduct a literature study on teaching and learning online. Participants will create an interactive digital artifact of their findings.
Task for Week 4 In week 4, participants will explore and teach in a live virtual class using the WizIQ plugin activity directly from Moodle. Here’s a video tutorial on WizIQ activity on the Moodle and how to schedule and teach a virtual class. You may practise using the WizIQ plugin activity in the following Moodle course called WizIQ Practice Area. Here’s more about WizIQ plugin activity on Moodle.
Participants will also be able to schedule a WizIQ activity on the managers course (M4M).
The task of the final week is to schedule a live class, add content, teach, and share the recording for feedback from the participants. You may invite friends and colleagues to your session.
You are invited to join the annual free online moodlemoot for 2012 as a participant and/or presenter (No, it's not too late). The conference is run by educators for educators on technology in and out of the face-to-face and online classrooms. Here's the form with all the links and information: http://www.wiziq.com/course/4365-moodlemoot-2012-mmvc12
