From generation to generation Jewish families around the globe gather annually in their homes for the traditional Seder meal to observe Passover, the story of the Exodus from Egypt and journey from slavery to liberation.
In order to bring awareness to the injustices of contemporary issues of human trafficking and slavery; the significance of a dessert-oriented Chocolate Seder provides an opportunity to stimulate meaningful dialogue about this timely issue affecting those enslaved (many of whom are children) laboring in the cocoa fields of Africa and Latin America where much of the chocolate available to us in the U.S. today gets its roots. According to the CNN Freedom Project/Ending Modern-Day Slavery, “The chocolate industry is worth an estimated $110 billion a year, and yet its key commodity is grown by some of the poorest people on the planet, in plantations that can hide the worst forms of child labor.”
At Temple Beth El of Boca Raton in Florida, the Social Action Committee is steadfastly supporting efforts to bring this serious matter to light, and on April 9th they will be holding a Women’s Anti-Human Trafficking and Anti-Slavery Chocolate Seder. Katariina “Kat” Rosenblatt, a survivor of human trafficking and founder of There is H.O.P.E. for Me will be the keynote speaker at “The Sweet Road to Freedom: A Jewish Women’s Chocolate Seder Raising Awareness about Slavery and Human Trafficking.
This Seder is representative of many others being held around the country focusing on the disturbing fact that slavery is still very much alive in our modern world. More than 200 guests are expected to attend this thought-provoking evening that will include a Seder of chocolate desserts made in ethical ways, sourced from chocolate makers locally who are part of a national renaissance of approximately 40-50 chocolate makers nationwide who make chocolate known as “American Craft Chocolate.” Some of the offerings will include both tasting and sipping chocolate, along with a Seder plate made out of white chocolate. For those who wish to create a dessert-style Chocolate Seder at home using fair trade chocolate, the tempting ideas are only limited to the imagination. Two of the recipes that will be highlighted during the Temple Beth El of Boca Raton Chocolate Seder will be popular “Perfect Chocolate –Dipped Strawberries” and No-Bake White Chocolate Cheesecake Shots. [RECIPES BELOW] The berries can be made ahead the night before and kept in the refrigerator prior to serving, and the cheesecake shots often made with crushed graham cracker crumbs will be made with crushed mandel bread in order to be compliant for Passover.
For consumers looking to enact change in the cocoa farming industry that ultimately is behind the chocolate products we enjoy; seeking out and purchasing Fair Trade certified chocolate (“from the farm to the bar”/ “from the bean to the bar”) is a means of supporting this effort to eliminate the exploitation of human lives. Fair trade certification ensures farmers receive a fair price, allowing them to invest in techniques that bring out the flavors of their regions, and strictly prohibits slave and child labor. Hosting a chocolate Seder is a tasty way to bring about discussion and enact change for the future of the chocolate industry and the human rights of all those who work in that industry.

Every year, Social Media Examiner comes out with its annual social media marketing report, based on feedback provided by thousands of marketers in North America and Europe mostly. One question specifically asks what marketers are most concerned about in social media, or wish to learn more about. In 2009 & 2010, social bookmarking was the key topic, Facebook was the big topic in 2011 while Google+ was the biggest one in 2012. What about 2013? This year, 62% of marketers want to know more about… blogging! It may sound surprising at first, knowing blogging is not particularly recent compared to other social media or collaborative networks. Yet, since blogging is at the heart of any good content marketing strategy, knowing how content is becoming key thus explains the growing importance of this tactic in the marketing communications toolkit. It also ties in to ways of reaching out to influencers, specially when one realizes that 86% of social media influencers blog, according to Technorati. Thus, if a brand wishes to reach out to industry leaders and influencers, or if you are a personal brand or company that wishes to establish thought-leadership and credibility, blogging is certainly a key tactic that contributes to a strong digital brand and content marketing approach. Somewhat ironic to see blogging coming back as a key tactic, after more than a decade in existence, but as some folks say: blogging provides the fire, while social media is the fuel to make it spread!...
