Next time a student asks of what value mathematics is, tell them they are in good company and either direct them to or go over the arguments on this page. 

After you have done so they will probably not raise that argument again as a way of getting away from some boring maths topic.

With immigration a big topic in the European and local elections, BBC News local government correspondent Mike Sergeant visits a school in north-west London, where there are 42 languages spoken in the playground.

Warning, little or no maths content.  This is a thoughtful examination of some of the issues raised in a school with a large concentration of immigrants from diverse backgrounds.  I think its worth reading as it highlights the fact that one size does not fit all when it comes to educating children who have been relocated from diverse backgrounds.
