Gaming on Linux: A guide for sane people with limited patience | PCWorld

Gaming on Linux: A guide for sane people with limited patience | PCWorld | Much Geeking | Scoop.it
With a little know-how and some simple console commands, you can play PC games on Linux so smoothly that you'll never need to boot into Windows again.
markusmunch's insight:

Experiments with WINE proved Ubuntu more capable of running Civ 5 than the student trial of Windows 8 which lasted about a fortnight on my laptop, so I was interested to see how my current Black Opal 64 installation gets on with Steam on Linux. The long and the short is that "it doesn't" but many of the options suggested here don't rely on Steam to work.  The Humble Bundle is a far worthier project and is likely to get a feature of it's own on this page any minute now and one, slightly flakey option which doesn't get a mention, is PlayOnLinux which does all kinds of technical wizardry and never quite got the spells right for me. Sane people who wish to remain that way do not want to google the term "error failed to load steamui.so" for hours before they can use unfeasibly large weaponry to shoot perfectly innocent pixels.

Meet the PengPod, a 'true Linux' tablet starting at $120 | PCWorld

Meet the PengPod, a 'true Linux' tablet starting at $120 | PCWorld | Much Geeking | Scoop.it
Now in the midst of a crowdfunding effort, this new line will include two tablet models as well as a mini PC.

There's still a way to go before this project reaches its funding target of $49000 but with bargain basement prices and an operating system that handles much of the workflow you'd expect from a pc, with all the advantages of Android to dual boot into, I really hope this one achieves its goal in the next 16 days.

Vive La Linux Revolution!

Linux gaming on the rise: EA arrives on Ubuntu and Valve plans Steam port | Ars Technica

Linux gaming on the rise: EA arrives on Ubuntu and Valve plans Steam port | Ars Technica | Much Geeking | Scoop.it
"After indie succeses, Linux is finally attracting mainstream game publishers."

It was very interesting to see the introduction of the Humble Indy Bundle to the software centre on my most recent install of Ubuntu 12.04 but I was even more intrigued by the release of RTS game Oil Rush with Linux platform support stated clearly in marketing and on the packaging. Casting around for reviews of Oil Rush, some comparisons with the Kevin Costner flop, Waterworld, did make me think twice about buying the game but gameplay footage has convinced me that even in the unlikely event that I don't get much out of it, my son probably will.

With additional speculation in the article about Steam support in the pipeline from Valve, it finally seems that the ability to run Civilization without recourse to WINE is not that far off. Judging by the pace of change since my first install of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, back when "round 'ere were all just fields," it seems possible that I may be able to wave goodbye to Winblows before my free student license runs out on the execrable Windows 8. All that's needed now, is for Adobe to wake up and smell the coffee, so I can single-boot into an open-source OS that develops and improves instead of adding bells and whistles in the name of progress. The days of Mark Shuttleworth's Bug #1 are numbered.

Could This App Create A Free, Secret Web?

Could This App Create A Free, Secret Web? | Much Geeking | Scoop.it

The technology sounds unreal, but it works. After it launched last March, FireChat instantly became the top social networking app in Taiwan. The reason: around 100,000 activists in Taipei had taken to the streets to protest a trade agreement with China, and local blogs like this one urged them to download FireChat — just in case the government shut down web access.

markusmunch's insight:

Did Kim Dotcom snitch? Will Anonymous open a can of whup-ass on his fat ass? Or is the timing of this with the launch of his new toy too coincidental? @YourAnonNews have reported the new site (https://mega.co.nz/) as down but a recent f5 on the homepage shows it to be up and running some minutes after their Tweet.

What IS without doubt is that https://twitter.com/MEGAdotCo has been hacked, the hive is pissed off and  the integrity of the site has been called into question in several estimable locations, not least among them being The Register - "Kim Dotcom's locker may be full, but the cupboard is bare" http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/01/21/kim_dotcom_price_and_value/

Linus Torvalds is livid -- directs middle digit at Nvidia

Linus Torvalds is livid -- directs middle digit at Nvidia | Much Geeking | Scoop.it
Linus Torvalds has just become my hero. For all the hours I slaved to make varying vintages of Nvidia cards work in Ubuntu, for the money I spent replacing a card which had no technical faults whatsoever beyond that the manufacturers won't play ball with Linux, for having the balls to say "fuck you Nvidia," Mr. Torvalds, I salute you. Now, if you could just take a few well-aimed pot-shots at EA Games, I will offer seven generations of my childrens' children in undying fealty. Oh and btw, fuck you Nvidia.
