So technology is great especially for a business to compete in an industry. Knowing how to use it to your advantage can set you apart from others and eventually create a network effect. However owning technology can be more than just owning the hardware and software. It includes cost such as training, developing, designing, etc. that it why its sometimes better to use a cloud system because it can cut the cost of using a third party than owning one. They can be more reliable and offer more because of their expectations to perform well for other business. Just as mention in the article it is important to look at the TCO before deciding to own one. It can be the key to how long a business can exist.
